A rising Zimbabwean teen has been training in Alexandria, Egypt ahead of the World Junior Squash Championships later this summer.

Ryan Gwidzima, 17, has been training alongside coach Mohamed Elkeiy. The Zimbabwan is a former Wycliffe College pupil, his studies cut short by the pandemic. He remained in Bulawayo and was forced to train in a neighbour’s garage.

Gwidzima was spotted when Egypt played at the African Senior Championships last year.

Squash Federation of Africa president Lucky Mlilo said: “The Egyptians actually spotted Ryan’s skills and they thought that it would be nice for him to go to Egypt so that he trains with them and prepare for the world junior championships that will take place in July and then the British and the US championship that will come in future.”

Gwidzima has been at Wycliffe College since 2018.

Since he has been in the UK he won the under-13 Hungarian Junior Open in 2018 and the North West title under the guise of England Squash in the same month.

Zimbabwe hope to send an under-19 team to the World Junior Championships in Melbourne, Australia in July.
