Berihu Aregawi (26:50.66) and Gudaf Tsegay (29:29.73) booked their places for 25 laps of Budapest with impressive wins in the Ethiopian world trials.

World 5000m champion Tsegay ran the fourth fastest time ever by a woman taking 10 seconds off her PB from last year.

Ejgayehu Taye and Lemlem Hailu were also under 30 minutes.

Aregawi, the world cross-country runner-up and Olympic fourth-placer, also set a world lead as he defeated Olympic champion Selemon Barega (26:51.87).

Trackwired Arkansas Grand Prix, Fayetteville, USA, June 24

Cordell Tinch has suddenly emerged this season as a potential new 110m hurdles star. The 8.16m long jumper and 2.22m high jumper had gone into 2023 with a four-year-old PB of 13.63 having not competed outdoors in 2020, 2021 or 2022.

Indoors this year he won the NCAA division two 60m hurdles title in 7.51 and ran a legal PB of 13.21 outdoors in the NCAA outdoor division two championships before winning the final in a very windy 12.87/6.0.

In the heats in Fayetteville he ran a legal PB of 13.09/0.2 before destroying that in the final with a world-leading 12.96/1.3 which moves him into the all-time top 20.

In second British champion Tade Ojora improved his PB to 13.26 which keeps him eighth all-time in the UK but moves him away from former world medallist Jon Ridgeon’s 13.29 which was Ojora’s previous best. Ojora’s time is inside the World Championships qualifying time of 13.28.

European Team Championships, Chrorzow, Poland, June 23-25

With a largely young and inexperienced team, for the first time ever Britain failed to win a single event but there were second places for Bianca Williams (200m), Izzy Boffey (800m), Hannah Nuttall (5000m) and Scott Lincoln (shot) and third places for Jeremiah Azu (100m), Zak Seddon (steeplechase) and Rebekah Walton (javelin).

Scott Lincoln (Getty)

The latter produced arguably the British performance of the weekend as her 59.76m went fourth all-time with the current javelin spec.

Surprisingly she scored more points (14) than Britain did combined in both sprint relays (0), the men’s high jump (3), women’s steeplechase (3), high jump (2), triple jump (2) and shot (2). Britain only scored four points in the women’s 1500m where the far too large field of 16 meant Ellie Baker got badly baulked on the last lap.

The failure of the British sprint relay teams where of the 12 funded podium sprinters only Richard Kilty competed was particularly disappointing given the funding and the relative lack of opportunities that the best sprinters get of getting together under competitive circumstances before major championships and how much sprinters of the past such as Linford Christie and John Regis turned out in these events and contributed to Britain’s success.

Italy won from Poland by 24 points.
