Japan and Zambia squared off in their first match of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup. Japan was causing issues to Zambia's backline throughout the first half, and their efforts were finally rewarded by Hinata Miyazawa's goal in the 43rd minute to help Japan grab a 1-0 lead going into halftime. With the momentum on their side, Japan used it in the second half and didn't look back. Featuring goals from Hinata Miyazawa, Mina Tanaka, Jun Endo, and Riko Ueki, Japan cruised to a 5-0 victory within Group C play.
