Angels 3B Rendon won't play again in 2023

The Los Angeles Angels made the long-expected announcement Saturday that third baseman Anthony Rendon will not play again this season.

A leg injury July 4 has limited Rendon's ability to conduct on-field workouts, but the Angels had been mum on his status until manager Phil Nevin said Saturday the veteran won't take the field again this year.

Rendon, 33, was hurt when he fouled a ball off his lower leg in a game against the San Diego Padres. The original diagnosis was a contusion, with Rendon later saying he was diagnosed with a fractured tibia.

In 43 games this season, Rendon batted .236 with two home runs and 22 RBIs.

Signed to a seven-year, $245 million deal with the Angels before the 2020 season, his time in the American League has been injury-riddled. The most games the former Washington Nationals star has played with the Angels in his four seasons were the 58 he logged in 2021. He has batted .249 with 22 home runs and 111 RBIs in 200 games during his time with Los Angeles.

The Angels also activated right-hander Jaime Barria from the injured list and optioned left-hander Jhonathan Diaz to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Barria, 27, last pitched for the Angels on Sept. 6. He is 2-6 this season with a 5.67 ERA in 32 games (six starts). Diaz, 27, had a 10.29 ERA In four appearances (one start).
