Exeter Chiefs' win over Gloucester reminds boss Rob Baxter of title-chasers

Exeter boss Rob Baxter says his side's late victory over Gloucester was reminiscent of the side that challenged for Premiership titles.

It came after Stu Townsend went over with four minutes to go as the Chiefs overturned a nine-point deficit in the last five minutes.

"This actually reminds me of quite a few performances when we were regularly a top two team," said Baxter.

"People never remember the messy wins. We won quite a lot of last-ditch games, it used to be something we were renowned for, getting the last try in games," he told BBC Radio Devon.

"Getting the last points in games is actually a strength and I'm hoping that may be a sign of good things to come."

The win sees Exeter's new-look squad move up to third in the Premiership after their fourth win in six matches.

All four of those victories have come at Sandy Park as Exeter look fore a first win away from home in the league since beating Bristol at Ashton Gate on 7 October 2022.

"They've put a lot of hard work into two away games when they didn't come away with anything," added Baxter, whose side has lost at Harlequins and Northampton this season.

"We've probably deserved a little bit more out of those, so today feels like it's a bit of a get out of jail free card that we've played at the end, and we did a lot in the second half to try and lose the game.

"We've got to try and learn from those, there's a lot to review, but if we can learn from those, and we can genuinely move forward, then I think we will have a great opportunity to keep improving.

"There's nothing that's changed this season whether we've won or lost, we've got to keep improving, and I feel that's exactly the scenario we're in now."
