Antoine Dupont: France captain will make the 'perfect sevens player', says Danny Care

France captain Antoine Dupont will make the "perfect sevens player", says England scrum-half Danny Care.

He captained France in their home World Cup quarter-final defeat by South Africa in the XVs game in October.

"If anyone can go there and be the best player in [sevens] it is him," Care told the Rugby Union Weekly podcast.

"He is the perfect sevens player and will be a joke. He will be incredible, people won't touch him. He will score and set up tries.

"He is the best player in the world and it is something that means a lot to him and is a home Olympics so imagine how special that would be."

The Toulouse scrum-half, who led France to a 2022 Six Nations Grand Slam, vowed to make "sacrifices" in pursuit of his Olympic dream which would result in a pause in his XVs career.

Dupont will join the sevens squad in January before events in Canada and Los Angeles rather than build-up to the 2024 Six Nations.

He was named that tournament's best player in 2020, 2022 and 2023 and has featured in every edition since his France debut in 2017.

"He is probably going to play in another 10 Six Nations, so it is like 'can I play in a home Olympics and win a gold medal?'" Care added.

"It is a dream for every kid who watched the Olympics. Imagine beating everyone in the world and doing it in your home country where everyone already loves you."

Dupont follows two-time World Cup winner Sonny Bill Williams, who featured at the 2016 Rio Olympics with New Zealand, in playing sevens directly after the XVs World Cup.

Former Springboks wing Bryan Habana also attempted to compete at the 2016 Games but was left out of South Africa's Olympic squad after making the initial training group.

Former Australia captain Michael Hooper announced last week he also has made the switch to sevens.

The Six Nations takes place from 2 February to 6 March, while the Paris Olympics run from 26 July to 11 August.
