As the sole representative of the African continent, Team Egypt is poised to make a resounding statement at the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup Chengdu 2023.

Top-ranked African Cup champion Omar Assar and six-time African champion Dina Meshref will spearhead the Egyptian contingent. Assar recently surged to World No.20 and, in May, became the second African player to reach the quarterfinal stage of a World Championships.

In the Mixed Doubles, Assar and Meshref, current African Champions, have secured a spot in the Olympic Games Paris 2024. The teams coach faces a challenging decision as players cannot participate in both mixed doubles and singles under the Mixed Team World Cup rules.

TEAM EGYPT (#9 seed)

Dina MESHREF (World No.28)
Coming from a strong table tennis family background where both her parents were national champions and siblings all accomplished players in Egypt, Dina Meshref is a natural-born winner. Dubbed the African Table Tennis Queen, she has indeed lived up to the name, sweeping titles across the continent. In 2020, Meshref chose to start competing with the hijab, the Muslim headdress, in hope to inspire more Muslim girls into sports.

Mariam ALHODABY (World No.75)
At 23, Mariam Alhodaby completed a fairytale run to clinch the womens singles title at the 2021 ITTF-Africa Senior Championships, marking her maiden appearance at the senior level competition. Ranked 39th in womens doubles, Mariam is a key asset in team events.

Yousra HELMY (World No.81)
At 27, Yousra Helmy, daughter of table tennis players Ashraf Helmy and Nihal Meshref, competed at the 2016 and 2020 Summer Olympics as part of the Egyptian team in the womens team event.

Marwa ALHODABY (World No.96)
As the twin sister of Mariam Alhodaby, Marwa Alhodaby is a talented table tennis player. In September, Marwa claimed the womens doubles silver medal with Cameroons Sarah Hanffou at the Africa Senior Championship.

Omar ASSAR (World No.20)
Flourishing as a junior player in Egypt, Omar Assar quickly became a mainstay in the Egyptian national team, achieving notable singles successes at the African Championships and the Africa Cup. Omar also made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics as the first Egyptian to make the quarterfinals.

Ahmed SALEH (World No.50)
Aged 44, Ahmed Saleh has been operating on the professional scene since before the turn of the millennium. Claiming top honours at the Africa Cup and Africa Championships, he has also made his presence known on a global level, competing at the Mens World Cup, World Championships, and Olympic Games.

Mohamed EL-BEIALI (World No.67)
Cementing his place in the Egyptian national team, Mohamed El-Beiali has proved an integral member at several tournaments both inside and beyond African boundaries. He represented Egypt in Tokyo 2020 and impressed crowds with notable victories.

Youssef ABDEL-AZIZ (World No.138)
At 23, Youssef Abdel-Aziz is a young and talented table tennis player. In WTT Contender Almaty 2023, he entered into the mens doubles quarterfinals with compatriot Khalid Assar. On the singles side, he reached the quarterfinals in WTT Feeder Düsseldorf II 2023.
