2023 in Numbers: A Year of Global Triumphs and Unforgettable Feats

In 2023, the world of table tennis was set ablaze by phenomenal achievements and exceptional performances, illuminating the sports global landscape. It was a year that echoed the resounding efforts and dedication of Member Associations, propelling the sport to new heights. Now, it is time to delve into some of the captivating statistics of the year. 

The European Youth Championships in Gliwice, Poland, set an incredible milestone in 2023 by welcoming an astounding 551 players from 44 Member Associations, marking the event with the highest player turnout of the year. This exceptional turnout not only showcased the sports tremendous appeal but also highlighted the global reach of table tennis, creating an extraordinary platform for young talents to compete and flourish on an international stage. 

Durbans ITTF World Table Tennis Championships was a monumental occasion, drawing participation from an impressive 59 Member Associations, the highest number seen in any single event this year. This monumental return to Africa, after an 84-year hiatus, not only highlighted the sports widespread popularity but also signified remarkable development within the heart of the continent. It was a profound testament to the sports exponential growth and global reach. 

Throughout the year, Member Associations set a spirited pace with their fervent engagement. Chinese Taipei led the charge, actively involved in a staggering 67 events, followed closely by Germany and India, who participated in 65 events. Their passionate involvement not only showcased their dedication but also infused the global table tennis arena with unparalleled energy and dynamism. Meanwhile, Egypts robust representation with 184 players illuminated their unwavering dedication to the sports growth and expansion, marking them as the Member Association with the most players participating in events this year.  

When it comes to players, Chinese Taipeis Kao Cheng-Jui took the lead, participating in the most number of events (26). Right behind him is Slovakias Tatiana Kukulkova, who competed in 24 events, earning her the title of the female player with the most events played 

Korea Republics Shin Yubin embraced a special year, fiercely competing in an astounding 171 matches, boasting an impressive 70.76% win ratea true testament to dedication and resilience. On the other hand, 16-year-old Alan Kurmangaliyev (top image) from Kazakhstan emerged as an outstanding force in the singles category, securing the title of the player with the most singles matches won (108), singles games won (356), and singles points won (5035). 

Irans 14-year-old sensation Benyamin Faraji stood tall, claiming victory in nine singles events, displaying unwavering consistency and excellence. Meanwhile Japans Yuna Ojio, who shone brightly at the ITTF World Youth Championships, also had a stellar 2023 with an outstanding 13 singles final appearances, securing victory in sixan impressive display of mettle during high-pressure moments. Alongside these achievements, Austrias budding talent, Julian Rzihauscheck, distinguished himself as the player with the most victories in decider games, securing an impressive tally of 23 triumphs  

Another captivating feat of the year was when Hungarys Mercedes Nagyvaradi delivered a breathtaking marathon match against Christina Kallberg at the European Games, clinching victory in a gruelling encounter that spanned 172 points, with a final score of 10-12, 15-13, 9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-13, and 17-19.  

These remarkable statistics and performances not only mark the achievements of the past year but also serve as a prelude to the exciting prospects awaiting in 2024. With such remarkable momentum, the table tennis world eagerly anticipates another year of breathtaking feats, continued growth, and boundless inspiration.
