Looking for bank holiday plans for the end of this month? Look no further. The inaugural Pickering Memorial Throws International is coming to Loughborough University on Monday May 27, writes Nick Ridgeon.
Partnering with some fantastic charities and brands, this exclusive throws-only event will be the most inclusive pathway competition, incorporating able-bodied and para-events across the different disciplines. Celebrating the lives and contributions of the Pickering family, we cant wait to give throwers the perfect opportunity to throw far, nurture new talent and showcase British throwing at its best.
Featuring teams from England and all across Europe, the standard of this competition will be nothing short of impressive, with athletes vying for those all-important qualification distances to secure their spots on the European, world under-20 and Olympic teams this summer.
England team captain Charlotte Payne shared her excitement for the event not only in terms of competition, but also as it is supporting a cause close to her heart as a recipient of a Ron Pickering Memorial Fund grant: The Pickering Memorial Throws International is the perfect way to honour the legacy of Shaun Pickering who was an incredible champion of athletics. He contributed so much to the athletes and coaches in our sport, and we are so grateful for the time and effort he invested in us.
We have such a talented crop of young throwers in the UK, and I cant wait to witness some future champions in action not only from the UK but from all across Europe, all celebrating the amazing work of the Pickering family.
Joining Payne on the line-up so far will be Swiss javelin and shot specialist Sabrina Boss and Italian discus and shot specialist Pietro Dal Soglio, to name just two.
Throws coach Garry Power will be heading up the England team and says: The Pickering Memorial Throws International is going to be a fantastic celebration of throws. We are throwers, throwing a party! Come and see our excellent young throwers striving for personal bests and qualification distances in high quality competition from athletes across Europe.
As well as claiming top spot on the podium, athletes will be battling for prizes that range from free accommodation on a warm weather training camp to 500 from the Ron Pickering Memorial Fund and free Shokz headphones.
Tickets are 6 with all of the ticket sales split between the RPMF and the Personal Best Foundation.
