Tottenham have extended the loan of Germany forward Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for next season, the Premier League club announced Tuesday.

The deal will include an option to make the transfer permanent for a fee of 10 million ($10.86 million), sources told ESPN.

Tottenham brought Werner to north London in January on a loan deal until the end of the season. However, his season was ended early after he suffered a hamstring injury in Tottenham's 3-2 loss to Arsenal on April 28.

The 28-year-old registered two goals and three assists from 14 appearances as Tottenham finished fifth in the Premier League. Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou said following Werner's season-ending injury that the club would wait until the end of the campaign to make a decision on his future.

"The only reason for that is that it's not about the here and now, it's about the overall strategy," Postecoglou said. "I'm talking about where I want us to be [in the] next six months to be in a better place than today. Timo we signed until the end of the season on loan and he's part of that strategy to see what we need to do in the summer and can we do it.

"Are there going to be other gaps and where does Timo fit in with that strategy? So we have a plan in place, and that was irrespective. I think he's been very good for us. He came in at a really important time in January when Sonny [Son Heung-Min] was away [at the Asian Cup] , then Richy [Richarlison] got an injury.

"We were short in wide areas. Him coming in was very helpful for us and I think he's made an impact but in my mind to make those definitive decisions, I still need some clarity about what we've got here first."

Werner moved back to previous club RB Leipzig from Chelsea for 20 million in August 2022 having spent two difficult seasons at Stamford Bridge, where he scored just 23 goals in 89 appearances.

However, he found his match time limited under manager Marco Rose, scoring just twice in eight Bundesliga games before joining Spurs.

Information from ESPN's James Olley contributed to this report.
