Police are investigating a report of assault following an incident involving Sale Sharks' rugby player Jonny Hill and a spectator.

A 28-year-old supporter claimed he was left with a cut above his eye following an altercation with England international Hill, after Bath's home victory over Sale on Saturday.

Police confirmed that one man received medical treatment from a paramedic.

Hill, 29, is currently sidelined through injury and watched the game from the stands.

Sale said they would be conducting their own investigation into the incident.

The fan, who did not want to be named, said he did not want to "make a big thing" of the incident.

He was attending the match with his partner and her family.

In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police said: Officers are investigating after receiving a report of one man assaulting another at Bath Rugby grounds, in Spring Gardens Road, Bath, on Saturday 1 June."

The force has appealed for any witnesses to contact them.

Sale said in a statement on Saturday: Sale Sharks are aware of an incident involving a player and Bath Rugby fan at the final whistle of today's semi-final.

The club will work with Bath Rugby to complete an investigation into the incident and will provide no further comment at this time.
