Warholm, Dos Santos, Benjamin clash in Monaco

Mouth-watering 400m hurdles showdown at the Diamond League plus a stacked mens 800m on the French Riviera

Karsten Warholm, Rai Benjamin and Alison dos Santos go head to head in the 400m hurdles at the Diamond League in Monaco on Friday (July 12).

The meeting, which is broadcast by BBC in the UK, is the first time the three men have met since the Diamond League final last year.

Will they come close to Warholms world record of 45.94 set in Tokyo in 2021? If not, maybe Warholms meeting record of 46.51 set last year.

The Monaco event of course follows hot on the heels of the Paris Diamond League five days earlier when there were world records from Yaroslava Mahuchikh in the high jump and Faith Kipyegon in the 1500m.

Three of the top four from the fast mens 800m at the Paris Diamond League last week Djamel Sedjati, Gabriel Tuel and Aaron Cheminingwa take on the world champion Marco Arop of Canada and world bronze medallist Ben Pattison of Britain at the Monaco event, plus US champion Bryce Hoppel.

Kenyan champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi is the main name missing from an other power-packed two-lap line-up. Could we see another 1:41 performance?

Fresh from her UK 200m victory, Dina Asher-Smith faces her training partner and world indoor champion Julien Alfred over 100m in Monaco. Another member of Asher-Smiths squad, Rhasidat Adeleke, runs the 400m against US champion Kendall Ellis.

Noah Lyles has dropped out of the 200m to focus on training in the United States, but the line-up still has Letsile Tebogo of Botswana, Tarsis Orogot of Uganda and Alexander Ogando of the Dominican Republic.

The mens sprint hurdles sees Grant Holloway of the United States taking on Rasheed Broadbell of Jamaica, French star Sasha Zhoya, Trey Cunningham of the US and European champion Lorenzo Simonelli of Italy.

In the middle-distance races Jakob Ingebrigtsen runs the 1500m against Yared Nuguse of the United States, Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya, Oli Hoare of Australia, Niels Laros of Netherlands and fellow Norwegian Narve Gilje Nordas.

British champion Neil Gourley and Elliot Giles also run.

Jess Hull (Getty)

The rarely run womens 2000m features in-form Jess Hull just days after her 3:50.83 Oceania 1500m record behind Faith Kipyegons world record in Paris. Also in the field are Melissa Courtney Bryant of Britain, Georgia Griffith of Australia, European 1500m champion Ciara Mageean of Ireland and Edinah Jebitok of Kenya. The world record of 5:21.56 is held by Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi set in Zagreb in 2021.

Given the shape she is in, Hull should certainly beat the Oceania record of 5:37.71 held by Benita Willis-Johnson since 2003.

European 5000m champion Nadia Battocletti and American Weini Kelati face Aynadis Mebratu of Ethiopia among others in the womens 5000m, with Brit Hannah Nuttall also in the mix and Katie Snowden on pacing duties.

Molly Caudery (Getty)

Molly Caudery, Britains world indoor champion, faces a big pre-Olympic test as she takes on Katie Moon of the United States, Alysha Newman of Canada, Nina Kennedy of Australia and European champion Angelica Moser of Switzerland in the pole vault.
