Eriksen, Alli disappoint for Spurs at Anfield

Tottenham Hotspur's dreadful Premier League away form continued as they surrendered a first-minute lead to lose 2-1 against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

Positives

Harry Kane's excellent season continued with his 16th goal for club and country this campaign, and a fine display from Paulo Gazzaniga in goal means manager Mauricio Pochettino shouldn't worry too much about the long-term absence of regular stopper Hugo Lloris.

Negatives

Tottenham needed to make the most of their rare spells of possession, and the likes of Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli were guilty of wasting chances to put their hosts under pressure on the counterattack, leaving Kane isolated.

Manager rating out of 10

6 -- It was the turn of Pochettino to attempt to deal with Liverpool's intensity in attack, but couldn't prevent the hosts from pouring forward, and probably should've withdrawn at least one of the ineffective Eriksen and Alli at half-time when it clearly wasn't working.

Player ratings (1-10; 10 = best, players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating)

GK Paulo Gazzaniga, 7 -- The Spurs stand-in looked confident coming for crosses, and made a good double save to deny forward duo Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino just before the half-hour mark, and brilliantly tipped over a Virgil van Dijk header shortly afterwards. Nothing he could do for either Liverpool goal.

DF Serge Aurier, 6 -- Tucked in when Liverpool attacked out wide, meaning he was rarely exposed to the pace of Sadio Mane, and the hosts' dominance meant he couldn't get forward to support Spurs' rare forays into the Reds' half. Clumsily kicked the back of Mane's leg to give away a penalty that Salah converted for 2-1. Replaced by Lucas Moura for the final seven minutes.

DF Toby Alderweireld, 6 -- The Belgian had one or two nervous moments in the first half but looked more secure in the second and dealt well with Firmino.

DF Davinson Sanchez, 6 -- Coped well with the aerial bombardment provided by the home full-backs, but nearly gifted Firmino a goal on the angle in the second half when he inexplicably left a bouncing ball in the penalty area.

DF Danny Rose, 6 -- Got sucked in centrally and lost an aerial duel that allowed Jordan Henderson to volley home the equaliser, and miscued a huge chance late on his unfavoured right foot. Yellow-carded for scything down Henderson after 36 minutes and will miss next Sunday's trip to Everton.

MF Harry Winks, 6 -- Muscled Henderson off the ball to win possession for Spurs to counter and stun their opponents with the early opener, but didn't get on the ball as much as he'd have liked, in the face of constant pressure. Replaced by Tanguy Ndombele after 62 minutes.

MF Moussa Sissoko, 7 -- A great bursting run through the middle of the pitch set Spurs on their way to a first-minute opener, and the Frenchman was one of the visitors' bright sparks.

MF Christian Eriksen, 5 -- Surprisingly sloppy on the ball, and didn't look comfortable with tracking the buccaneering runs of Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson on the overlap. Withdrawn for Giovani Lo Celso for the closing stages.

MF Dele Alli, 5 -- Starting his third game in eight days, and that heavy schedule looked like it caught up with the England man. The 23-year-old failed to get into the thick of the game, and didn't keep the ball well enough as Liverpool pressure intensified.

MF Son Heung-Min, 6 -- The South Korea international shifted inside and fired a deflected shot off the post and into the path of Kane to nod home. Unlucky not to score one himself when he rounded Liverpool keeper Alisson before hitting the bar from a tight angle.

FW Harry Kane, 7 -- Kept himself safely onside to stoop down and head into the back of the net after just 47 seconds, and was inches away from adding a second when stretching for Eriksen's cross-cum-shot midway through the first half.

Substitutes

MF Tanguy Ndombele, 6 -- Booked for pulling back Fabinho as the Brazilian looked to charge through the Tottenham half.

FW Lucas Moura, N/R -- Unable to make the breakthrough.

MF Giovani Lo Celso, N/R -- No impact from the Argentine.
