Penske Crew Member Suspended After Martinsville

MARTINSVILLE, Va. – Dave Nichols Jr., a tire technician for Joey Logano’s No. 22 Ford Mustang team in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, has been suspended one race for his actions at Martinsville Speedway over the weekend.

Nichols will sit out Sunday’s Cup Series event at Texas Motor Speedway after he was involved in a post-race scuffle between Logano and Denny Hamlin on pit road after Sunday night’s First Data 500.

Video replays showed that Nichols grabbed the back of Hamlin’s firesuit, sending him to the ground in a melee of words and fisticuffs that was sparked after Logano pushed off of Hamlin’s shoulder during a heated discussion between the two.

That action violated Section 12.8.1.C of the NASCAR Rule Book, addressing “member to member confrontation with physical violence.”

Nichols was one of three Penske team members called to the NASCAR hauler after Sunday’s race, along with competition director Travis Geisler and Logano’s crew chief, Todd Gordon.

Four teams – the Nos. 12, 17, 18 and 24 squads of Ryan Blaney, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Kyle Busch and William Byron, respectively – were fined $10,000 apiece for having one lug nut not safe and secure after the race Sunday night.

The respective crew chiefs: Jeremy Bullins, Brian Pattie, Adam Stevens and Chad Knaus, all received the five-figure fines.
