Heavy rain sees Durban's second MSL washout

Durban Heat v Paarl Rocks Match abandoned

Durban Heat were due to have played three matches in this year's Mzansi Super League (MSL), but they have yet to complete one thanks to the weather. Their home fixture against the Paarl Rocks was called off 10 minutes before the scheduled toss after the umpires deemed the outfield too wet following days of heavy rain.

South Africa's east coast has been affected by severe storms in the last two-and-a-half weeks, which have claimed 16 lives and seen the unusual occurrence of tornados. Up to 150mm of rain fell over the province between Thursday and Friday and though the worst is believed to be over, Kingsmead was in no condition to host a match. It has less than two days to recover, with the next fixture scheduled for Sunday morning at 10am, when the Heat are due to host Cape Town Blitz.

The home team will be desperate for things to be dry by then because they have yet to get their campaign underway. Their opening fixture against the Tshwane Spartans at home was washed out and the return match in Centurion interrupted by a power cut and then rain. The Heat have only played 7.1 overs of cricket in the tournament so far but looked good and had the Spartans 33 for 4 at the time.

Despite their poor fortune, the Heat remain off the bottom of the points table, in fifth position, with four points from their three matches. The Rocks have only completed one match and are due to play their third, on Sunday in Paarl, against the Spartans.
