Liga MX president Enrique Bonilla has tested positive for the coronavirus, the league confirmed in a statement released Friday evening.

Bonilla is under quarantine but in stable condition.

"As of now, in spite of the tests carried out, I don't have any serious symptoms and I will remain in quarantine as the authorities in the health ministry indicate," read the statement, signed by Bonilla.

"Of course, I'll keep myself informed about the situation the country is going through and the alternative and possible solutions to resolve it, especially in the Liga MX and Ascenso MX family," the statement continued.

Bonilla took over the Liga MX presidency in 2015, and he is chairman of the World Leagues Forum, an organization formed to represent leagues in dealing with FIFA and the various confederations around the globe.

There was no indication in the statement of how Bonilla had contracted the coronavirus, although ESPN Mexico's Jose Ramon Fernandez reported that Bonilla recently traveled to Spain, which has been hard hit by the outbreak.

Bonilla is the second known figure in Mexican soccer to test positive for the virus, after Atletico San Luis president Alberto Marrero was diagnosed earlier this week.

Marrero showed symptoms of the virus that has caused world sport to close down, and the club announced he had tested positive on Tuesday.

Liga MX games went ahead as normal March 13 in front of fans, but the league announced Saturday that the remaining games would be behind closed doors, with the league finally confirming on Sunday that all play would be suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The league is currently on hiatus "until further notice."

As of Friday evening, the Mexican government had confirmed 203 cases of coronavirus in the country, with two deaths.
