Ex-Real Madrid ace stars in Dutch gangster series

Former Real Madrid player Royston Drenthe has recently turned to acting and is starring in the ongoing Dutch TV series, Mocro Maffia.

The series revolves around the Moroccan Mafia in Netherlands and is based on the book by the same title.

Drenthe posted a clip of the upcoming episode on his Instagram page. The series is about three friends who rise to become the top cocaine dealers in Amsterdam, until a feud brought on by jealousy leads them to fall out.

The series is produced by Videoland and the second season, which stars Drenthe, was due to be filmed later this year, but brought forward due to the coronavirus crisis.

Drenthe joined Madrid in 2007 from Feyenoord and won a La Liga title in his first season. He stayed with the club for two more campaigns before moving to Hercules on loan, and was part of the team which earned a stunning 2-0 win at Camp Nou over Pep Guardiola's Barcelona in 2010.

At the end of that season, he moved to the Premier League with Everton before joining Russian side Alania 12 months later.

He returned to England in 2013, where he spent a season with Reading before signing for Sheffield Wednesday on loan.

After brief stints with Turkish side Kayseri Erciyesspor and Baniyas Club in the UAE, he retired in 2016 and decided to dedicate himself to rap. However, he reversed that decision to sign a one-year deal with Sparta Rotterdam in 2018 and helped them earn promotion.

Drenthe, 32, was also part of the Dutch side which won the Euro under-21 championship in 2007 and has one full cap. He is still playing at amateur side Kozakken Boys in the Netherlands.
