Surprise! Goodyer Takes WoO Pro Invitational Win

CONCORD, N.C. – In his debut World of Outlaws iRacing Invitational appearance, Tasmanian young gun Jock Goodyer drove to victory on Sunday night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

Goodyer completed the same sweep of the night that Logan Seavey did Wednesday en route to victory in the inaugural Pro Invitational by topping qualifying, winning his heat race and then taking the checkered flag in the 35-lap feature.

The path to victory for Goodyer in the main was adventurous, however.

He led the field to green from the pole and led the first two laps, but was slid on the third revolution around the four-tenths-mile virtual clay oval by Kevin Swindell, who stormed to the front at that point.

Swindell proceeded to dominate the middle stages of the race, despite two early yellows before the halfway point that saw Robbie Kendall go flipping after contact with David Gravel at lap eight and Chase Briscoe going around after contact with both Max McLaughlin and Tony Gualda on the 18th rotation.

The ensuing restart with 14 to go was when things got crazy, with Swindell leading back to green but bobbling in turn three and ceding position to both Logan Seavey and Goodyer, as Seavey took the lead.

Goodyer was quick to challenge, edging ahead of Seavey to pace the 23rd lap, but Seavey fired back to lead lap 24 just moments before another yellow waved and set up a seven-lap sprint to the finish.

After that restart, Seavey’s race unraveled as he got away from Goodyer on the initial green, only to come down in defense with six to go and make contact with Goodyer in turn one as a result.

The bump sent Seavey careening into the outside SAFER Barrier and ended his shot at victory, while Goodyer assumed command of the field ahead of a green-white-checkered restart.

Getting the jump with two to go, Goodyer was unstoppable en route to victory, taking the checkered flag in front of Tony Gualda – who came out of the E-main – by 1.457 seconds.

Reigning Knoxville Nationals winner David Gravel completed the podium, followed by Austin McCarl and Max McLaughlin.

Trent Ivey, Joe Kata, Chase Briscoe, Michael Faccinto and Corey Gordon completed the top 10, with Swindell crossing the finish line in 11th among the 20 cars that started the main event.

How star-studded was Sunday night’s race? It was tough enough that heavy-hitters like Kyle Larson, Parker Price-Miller, Ashton Winger, Brian Brown, Bill Balog and Tyler Courtney all failed to transfer through the alphabet soup.

The World of Outlaws iRacing Invitational Series continues Monday night with the first late model iteration of the sim-racing spectacular, led by defending World of Outlaws Morton Buildings Late Model Series champion Brandon Sheppard.
