Retaining the title Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the prestigious multi-sport event will be staged from Friday 23rd July to Sunday 8th August 2021. The Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will follow from Tuesday 24th August to Sunday 5th September 2021.
After last week’s announcement of the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games in light of the global spread of COVID-19, this decision is welcomed to best protect athletes, coaches, officials and fans alike.
ITTF President, Thomas Weikert and ITTF Secretary General, Raul Calin, underlined their support for today’s decision:
“The 33 Summer Olympic Federations showed unanimous support to the IOC proposal of new dates, underlining the necessity to work together with solidarity in these difficult times.” Thomas Weikert, ITTF President
“With the new dates announced, and once we receive their guidance, we will work closely with the IOC and IPC, as well as with our Continental Associations and Athletes Commission to make the necessary adjustments to our qualification pathways. We do hope this process can be completed within April 2020 in order to give enough time to our stakeholders to adjust their planning.” Raul Calin, ITTF Secretary General
“I want to thank the International Federations for their unanimous support and the Continental Associations of National Olympic Committees for the great partnership and their support in the consultation process over the last few days. I would also like to thank the IOC Athletes’ Commission, with whom we have been in constant contact. With this announcement, I am confident that, working together with the 2020 Tokyo Organizing Committee, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, the Japanese Government and all our stakeholders, we can master this unprecedented challenge. Humankind currently finds itself in a dark tunnel. These 2020 Olympic Games Tokyo can be a light at the end of this tunnel.” Thomas Bach, IOC President
