With most of the motorsports world on hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic, we’ve decided to highlight some of the sport’s legends on a daily basis. We begin each story within the pages of National Speed Sport News.
Harry Gant enjoyed the best run of his NASCAR racing career in September 1991.
At the age of 51, which would be unheard of in today’s racing world, Gant went on a hot streak, driving his familiar No 33 Skoal Bandit machine to four consecutive NASCAR Cup Series victories.
The streak began with a victory in the Southern 500 at Darlington (S.C.) and continued with triumphs at Richmond (Va.) Raceway, Dover (Del.) Int’l Speedway and Martinsville (Va.) Speedway.
Going for his fifth straight victory at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway, Gant was passed by Dale Earnhardt in the closing laps and finished second.
Gant earned 18 NASCAR Cup Series victories in 474 starts between 1973 and 1994. He also won 21 NASCAR Xfinity Series races in 128 starts in that series.
