DARLINGTON, S.C. – A man has been arrested after threatening to blow up Darlington Raceway according to the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators told ABC News 15 that 46-year-old Michael Donavan Avin left a threatening telephone message at Darlington Raceway on April 27. In addition, warrants for Avin’s arrest indicated he had written a letter stating he had access to 125 tons of bomb-making material.
Avin is currently in the W. Glenn Campbell Detention Center after being arrested Wednesday on the charge of possession, threatened or attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction for an act of terrorism, not resulting in death.
He is currently awaiting his bond hearing.
Darlington Raceway will host the NASCAR Cup Series’ return to competition on Sunday. The event will be the first for NASCAR since the COVID-19 pandemic began in mid-March.
