SAO PAULO — Ana Beatriz, a Brazilian racer who made four starts in the Indianapolis 500, has been arrested in her native Brazil as part of an alleged embezzlement and money-laundering scheme.

Beatriz, who most recently raced as Bia Figueirdo and is expecting her first child next month, was arrested along with her husband and father-in-law.

According to a report from RACER.com, the complaint filed in Rio de Janeiro indicates she was part of a scheme to secure money from the state to operate a number of hospitals. The complaint lists a number of issues, including the lack of a certification to operate medical facilities.

The report indicates that during an eight-year period the company led by her father-in-law and husband took in more than $118 million from the state. Her father-in-law is considered the main person behind the scheme, but Beatriz was allegedly the recipient of more than $250,000 through a business she is listed as the owner of.

Beatriz competed in 29 NTT IndyCar Series events from 2010 to ’13, earning a best finish of 11th in Toronto in2011. She made four Indianapolis 500 starts, which included a best finish of 15th in 2013.

She’s most recently competed in Stock Car Brasil.
