After Claiming Pole, Andretti Fastest In Sunday Practice

INDIANAPOLIS – After winning the pole for the Indianapolis 500 earlier in the day, Marco Andretti backed up his speed in practice Sunday afternoon at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Andretti clocked a lap at 224.122 mph in his No. 98 US Concrete Honda after his team transitioned the car to its race setup ahead of the 104th Indianapolis 500 on Aug. 23. He claimed the pole earlier in the day with a four-lap average of 231.068 mph.

Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Helio Castroneves was second in practice aboard the No. 3 Pennzoil Chevrolet for Team Penske at 224.067 mph.

Scott Dixon, who qualified second for the 104th Indianapolis 500, with a four-lap average of 231.051 mph, was third at 223.686 mph in the No. 9 PNC Bank Honda for Chip Ganassi Racing.

Dixon’s fast lap came after he lost control of his Honda earlier in practice when he was running on old tires. When the car exited turn four, it drifted high on exit and the five-time NTT IndyCar Series champion tried to keep the car out of the wall. It slid down the frontstraight before hitting the pit retaining wall.

The contact did minimal damage to the front of Dixon’s Honda. The car was brought to the garages for repair and Dixon was back on track for the final hour of practice.

“I was trying to get up to speed and make sure the balance was right, I turned in and it got wider than normal,” Dixon said. “As soon as it hit the bump, the wheels came off the car and it came around. I’m really quite lucky the car barely hit the wall.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay, the 2014 Indianapolis 500 winner, was fourth at 223.327 mph in the No. 28 DHL Honda. Santino Ferrucci rounded out the top-five with a fast lap of 223.127 mph in the No. 18 SealMaster Honda for Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan.

Thirty-two of the 33 cars in the starting field turned practice laps in Sunday’s practice. The only driver missing was James Davison, who was competing in the NASCAR Cup Series race on the road course at Daytona Int’l Speedway. He finished 30th in that event driving for Rick Ware Racing.

There is one more practice for the 33-car field, a two-hour practice taking place on Aug. 21, otherwise known as Carb Day.

The 104th Indianapolis 500 is set for Aug. 23 starting at 2:30 p.m. E.T.
