CONCORD, N.C. — Officials from the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series released a statement Thursday evening addressing the numerous positive COVID-19 tests that have followed The One and Only weekend at Iowa’s Knoxville Raceway.
In the statement, series officials confirmed that one driver reported minor symptoms to series officials and was advised to go in for testing. After a positive result was returned, the entire team was tested, resulting in two crew members also testing positive.
As a result, series officials reached out to all platinum (full-time) series drivers on Tuesday to inform them of the positive test results and remind them of the COVID-19 guidelines that were established prior to the series instituting its Return to Racing initiative.
Series officials advised drivers who came into close contact with infected individuals to get tested, after which several other participants and family members have also tested positive.
Those known to have contracted COVID-19 at this point include World of Outlaws driver Daryn Pittman and members of his Roth Motorsports crew, All Star Circuit of Champions regular Paul McMahan and his wife, Jan McMahan, members of the Kraig Kinser Racing team, sprint car driver Tori Knutson and World of Outlaws pit reporter Michaela Dumesny.
In addition, Knoxville Raceway officials confirmed a track employee also tested positive for COVID-19 in a statement on Twitter.
Any platinum drivers who are unable to race due to COVID-19-related quarantine will receive points based on their average finish for the season until they are able to rejoin the field.
“The World of Outlaws will continue to follow the CDC COVID-19 guidelines, ramping up some of the initial precautions from earlier in the season: temperature screening and questionnaires, social distancing and masks, and as an added precaution, the pit area at upcoming World of Outlaws events will remain closed to fans after racing until further notice,” the World of Outlaws statement read.
The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series is scheduled to be in action Friday at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., and Saturday at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, N.D.
