Richmond 1-2-3 Has ThorSport Ready For More

SANDUSKY, Ohio — Last weekend’s NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series event at Richmond Raceway was a historic moment for ThorSport Racing.

Led by Grant Enfinger, who celebrated in victory lane, the team swept the top-three finishing positions in the ToyotaCare 250 at the three-quarter-mile, D-shaped oval.

With Matt Crafton finishing second and Ben Rhodes following in third, it marked the first time in series history that one team finished 1-2-3 in a Truck Series event.

As Rhodes recalled during Monday’s Truck Series Playoff Media Day, it was a moment that led to another first following the race.

“I’ve never gotten a text message with the entire team as a group text from Duke Thorson, either before or after a race,” Rhodes noted. “Usually we’re all texting individually, or we’re calling and talking to him after the race. This was the first time that there was one big old group message. And it was really cool; he was saying how happy he was and proud of the team he was, and just being very complimentary of everybody’s efforts. He was thrilled. I was thrilled. Everybody was happy.

“It sucks that for me, selfishly, I didn’t get the win there … but for our team owner — who’s the reason we’re going into these race tracks, really — that was as big as anything,” Rhodes added. “I’m really, really happy for that. When Duke and Ronda Thorson are happy, I’m happy, because they’ve put so much in the sport for so long and they’re the picture-perfect definition of what team owners are supposed to be, in my eyes. I couldn’t be any happier or prouder of that finish for all of us.

“Really, I’m surprised that it hadn’t happened sooner, to be honest. Maybe we’ll get one through four next, with Johnny (Sauter) joining us.”

The last two Truck Series races have marked a return to form for ThorSport, which hadn’t won since Matt Crafton’s triumph at Kansas Speedway in late July. Before that, the team’s only two wins in 2020 came at the hands of Grant Enfinger during the first four races of the season.

Now, with back-to-back wins from Rhodes (Darlington Raceway) and Enfinger (Richmond) in their back pocket, ThorSport Racing appears primed to contend with GMS Racing and Hattori Racing Enterprises during the Truck Series postseason.

Rhodes feels the ThorSport Ford F-150s have all had speed this season, but that recently, the team’s turnaround has been in part due to fortunate breaks that have fallen in their favor.

“Luck is important, but it goes right along with speed, and we showed that at Richmond,” Rhodes noted. “We did everything absolutely perfect. I don’t think we lost a spot all night during pit stops. My guys, the No. 99 team, our pit stops were the best that I’ve ever had. They were phenomenal, but it just didn’t come to be for us quite like it did for Grant, as far as winning the race.

“If we just keep racing like that, we’re going to get wins. That’s the thing I feel like veteran drivers worry about more, is the fact that you make your own luck with speed,” Rhodes continued. “But as an organization, yes, we’ve had some crazy things happen over the past year or so that have finally started to leave us now. I can complain about luck all I want, but the fact is, I think we could have had a couple of other wins by now.

“Even though I don’t personally have those wins yet, we’re showing what we’re capable of and I believe all three of us — myself, Grant and Matt — will have something to say during the playoffs.”

The NASCAR Gander RV & Outdoors Truck Series playoffs commence Thursday night at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway.
