YAS ISLAND, Abu Dhabi – Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has been cleared to compete in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend at the Yas Island Circuit after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last week.
Hamilton missed last Sunday’s Sakhir Grand Prix after testing positive for COVID-19 on Dec. 1. George Russell raced in Hamilton’s place for Mercedes, leading the most laps and dominating the race before a mistake in the pits and a late puncture dropped him from contention.
Hamilton was cleared to race after negative COVID-19 tests in Bahrain on Wednesday and Abu Dhabi on Thursday according to a statement from the Mercedes team. Russell will return to Williams Racing for the final race of the season.
