India made big strides towards drawing level in the Border-Gavaskar series by establishing a big lead and then taking out Australia's top order cheaply in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. India's stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane was run out for 112 while Ravindra Jadeja made 57 as India were bowled out for 326, a sizeable lead of 131 runs. The Australians began shakily, with Joe Burns falling to Umesh Yadav in the fourth over. Although Yadav limped off with a calf problem, the rest of the bowling attack continued to make inroads. Jasprit Bumrah struck the key blow, bowling Steven Smith for 8, while the spin duo of R Ashwin and Jadeja kept things tight too. Debutant Mohammed Siraj was also impressive, as each of the bowlers got among the wickets. Cameron Green and Pat Cummins managed to push Australia into the lead, by just two runs at stumps, but they will have a steep task turning their overnight 133 for 6 into a substantial enough fourth-innings chase for India.
