Despite a plea from the city’s mayor, fans of Alabama Crimson Tide football flooded the streets of Tuscaloosa after the team’s championship win against Ohio State on January 11.
This footage, by Mick Gillispie, shows fans packing the Strip, along University Boulevard.
Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox had previously issued a warning against such gatherings due to COVID-19.
“We can’t have block parties this year,” he said in a Twitter video on January 8. “There will be a time and place to celebrate, but this is not the time,” he said.
Local news reports said that by January 9, Alabama had recorded “its worst week ever” for new coronavirus cases.
