Arjun Tendulkar returns 1-34 in unremarkable senior Mumbai debut

Haryana 144 for 2 (Rana 75*, Chauhan 43*) beat Mumbai 143 (Ankolekar 37, Jaiswal 35, Jayant Yadav 4-22, Chaprana 3-22) by eight wickets

Three years after he was picked for India Under-19, Sachin Tendulkar's son Arjun Tendulkar made his senior Mumbai debut in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy game against Haryana, but it didn't go as auspiciously as he would have hoped it would. He didn't get to face a ball, having come in at No. 11. With the ball, he struck in his second over to remove opener Chaitanya Bishnoi, but went on to return expensive figures of 1 for 34 in three overs.

In terms of the bigger picture, Mumbai lost their third match in a row, this one by eight wickets, to effectively be ruled out of a quarter-final berth.

The Elite Group E games are being played across Mumbai, and Suryakumar Yadav's team would have hoped to do much better than they have so far: they had lost to Delhi by 76 runs and to Kerala by eight wickets before this one. The run of poor results has left them bottom of the table with two to play, against Pondicherry and Andhra.

On this occasion, they won the toss and opted for first strike at the Bandra Kurla Complex, but while Yashasvi Jaiswal got going from one end, wickets fell in a heap at the other, with Jayant Yadav picking up two wickets with his offspin, and medium pacer Arun Chaprana and Yuzvendra Chahal getting into the act too.

As a result, Mumbai were 56 for 6 rather quickly, by the ninth over, and got to a respectable score only because of Sarfaraz Khan's 30 in 33 balls and Atharva Ankolekar's 37 in 25. Mumbai were bowled out with three balls left in their innings, Arjun stranded at the non-striker's end, as Yadav returned 4 for 22 and Chaprana 3 for 22.

The chase was a bit of a canter for Haryana even though Haryana lost two early wickets, including Arjun felling Bishnoi. But Himanshu Rana hit 75* in 53 balls and Shivam Chauhan scored 43* in 37 helped Haryana get home easily enough. The result put Haryana at No. 2 on the table, tied on 12 points with table-toppers Kerala but behind on net run-rate.
