Victoria 200 (Maddinson 77, Lyon 6-21) and 6 for 143 (Lyon 4-57) beat New South Wales 165 (Henriques 67) and 175 (Abbott 73, Boland 4-57) by four wickets

Victoria overcame the challenge posed by Nathan Lyon when he threatened to conjure another remarkable Sheffield Shield win for New South Wales to earn their first victory of the season on a tense day at the SCG.

At 5 for 87, the target of 141 looked a long way off with Lyon causing plenty of problems on a helpful service but 18-year-old Jake Fraser-McGurk showed impressive composure alongside the experienced James Pattinson to slowly whittle away at the runs. Fraser-McGurk, playing just his third Shield game, did have some moments of fortune when he twice edged Mitchell Starc through the vacant third slip area as the target neared but he finished the match with a thumping lofted drive off Lyon.

Sean Abbott's thumping 73 lifted NSW to their eventual lead as he manufactured 107 runs from the last three wickets after they had slid to 7 for 68 during the morning session.

Victoria were quickly out of the blocks in the chase as Nic Maddinson took on Lyon, hitting his first two deliveries for six and four when he was handed the new ball, but when Marcus Harris edged behind in the eighth over NSW began to squeeze the life out of the innings. Lyon would bowl unchanged for his 28.1 overs.

Peter Handscomb tried to break the shackles but only succeeded in running past a delivery that spun although at 2 for 79 Victoria were more than halfway there in the chase.

Matt Short was then cleaned up by a beautiful delivery from Lyon and when Maddinson, who had become becalmed after his rapid start, chipped to mid-on - Nick Larkin taking a one-handed catch - it gave Lyon his tenth wicket of the match and 600th of his first-class career.

The Lyon stranglehold on the innings was broken when Josh Hazlewood earned a debatable lbw against Seb Gotch at which point NSW were just about favourites but they could not work their way further into the Victoria tail.

Victoria had bowled superbly during the morning to take control of the match when NSW had resumed on 1 for 22. Daniel Hughes edged to third slip before the deficit had been erased and Scott Boland claimed his third when he took a sharp return catch to remove nightwatchman Lyon.

Pattinson produced a good one to remove his almost-namesake Kurtis Patterson then Mitch Perry continued his impressive match by having Moises Henriques caught at gully.

Steven Smith received a brute of a ball from Will Sutherland but replays suggested he was unfortunate to be given caught behind - Smith's reaction as he slowly walked off was certainly one of frustration - and when Peter Nevill edged Perry to slip the innings was in tatters.

Starc and Trent Copeland played their part in trying to provide some sort of target for Victoria but the lead was only 84 when the ninth-wicket fell.

Abbott then cut loose in thrilling style while also farming the strike to such effect that Hazlewood faced just five deliveries and contributed zero to a stand of 56 in six overs. Abbott hammered six sixes, some of them huge blows into the pavilion, before finally edging a hoick to slip.
