PARIS – Johnny Dumfries, who competed in 15 Formula One Grands Prix for Lotus in 1986 and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, has died at the age of 62.

Dumfries, the 7th Marquess of Bute, whose real name was John Colum Crichton-Stuart, teamed with Ayrton Senna at Lotus in 1986. He earned a best finish of fifth that season during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Following his lone Formula One season, Dumfries continued to race and earned the overall victory in the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans with teammates Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace aboard a Jaguar XJR-9LM.

“The indomitable spirit and energy which Johnny brought to his life will be greatly missed, and the immense warmth and love with which he embraced his family,” Dumfries’ family said in a statement.
