A Look At USAC’s Easter Weekend Sprint History

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. – Over the years, the USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Series has competed 20 times on Easter weekend.

That rings true for the 21st time this weekend when the series visits Indiana’s Lawrenceburg Speedway on Saturday night, April 3.

Since 1960, just three drivers have won multiple times on Easter weekend with the series: A.J. Foyt (Reading 1960, ’64), Tom Bigelow (Eldora in ’69, ’77) and Gary Bettenhausen (Terre Haute ’74, New Bremen ’76).

Eastern weekend has produced five first-time USAC National Sprint Car Series winners: Stan Bowman (Eldora ’62), Tom Bigelow (Eldora ’69), Paul Pitzer (Reading ’79), Frankie Kerr (Eldora ’94) and Logan Jarrett (Lawrenceburg 2015).

For Bowman, Pitzer and Jarrett, their Easter weekend wins stand as their only career USAC victories. In fact, Bowman’s 1962 score was the first ever USAC event held at Eldora.

The most recent Easter weekend events held by the series came in 2017, the lone year that featured multiple races at different tracks.

The races were won, respectively, by Chad Boespflug at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway and Chris Windom at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.

Nine different venues have hosted Easter weekend USAC National Sprint Car Series shows.

Eldora has held events on 10 occasions, Reading (Pa.) Fairgrounds three times, and once each for Cincinnati, Ohio’s Tri-County Speedway, Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track, New Bremen (Ohio) Speedway, Beaver Dam (Wis.) Raceway, Lawrenceburg, Bloomington and Tri-State.
