DARLINGTON, S.C. — Australian James Davison will recognize one of his country’s all-time great race car drivers when he straps into the Rick Ware Racing No. 15 for the Goodyear 400 NASCAR Cup Series event May 9 at Darlington Raceway.

The car’s paint scheme for the Throwback weekend at The Track Too Tough To Tame will copy the livery sported by Australian Supercar legend Dick Johnson when he drove his own car in three events during the 1990 Cup Series campaign.

“As a fellow Australian, I am proud to bring back Dick Johnson’s NASCAR paint scheme from 1990,” Davison said. “I grew up watching Dick racing his iconic No. 17 car toward the end of his legendary career in V-8 Supercars. Today my cousin, Will Davison, races the No. 17 car for Dick Johnson Racing.”

Dick Johnson Racing teamed with Roger Penske to field Supercar entries from 2014 through 2020, winning multiple titles with current IndyCar Series driver Scott McLaughlin behind the wheel.

Hopegivers Int’l, a nonprofit program that supports at-risk children in India, Nepal, Myanmar and Haiti, will be featured on the car.

Johnson participated in four Cup Series races in 1989 and three more the following year. His best finish was 22nd at Pocono Raceway in ’89.
