Shakib was banned for three ODIs and fined BDT 300,000 (US $3800) by the BCB for pointing towards his crotch on live television, when the camera panned towards the Bangladesh dressing room during the ODI against Sri Lanka in Dhaka. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim requested the BCB to reduce the ban for the "best interests of the team".

Shakib allegedly beat up a fan who was apparently harassing his wife at the Shere Bangla National Stadium. The incident took place when there was a rain break during the first ODI against India in 2014. After the BCB held a hearing, Shakib told the media that he wasn't aware that a player can't leave the dressing-room area during an international match.

He was in transit in London at the time, trying a catch a flight to the Caribbean to play the 2014 CPL. Days later, BCB banned him for six months for "serious misbehaviour" with Hathurusingha, and for the incident mentioned in the previous entry. "He has a severe attitude problem, which is unprecedented in the history of Bangladesh cricket," BCB president Nazmul Hassan has said back then. But after Bangladesh's poor performance in West Indies, the BCB reduced his ban to three and a half months in August that year.

During a BPL match in 2015, Shakib blew a fuse at umpire Tanvir Ahmed, abusing him openly after Ahmed turned down an lbw appeal. He was suspended for one match and was fined BDT 20,000 (USD 256 approx).

Bangladesh were irate when a no-ball for height was not given in the last over of their Nidahas Trophy match against Sri Lanka in March 2018. Mahmudullah, who was batting, argued with the umpires. Captain Shakib beckoned Mahmudullah to return to the dressing-room, in protest at the umpire's decision. Eventually Mahmudullah took them to victory with a six, and some of the players celebrated with the nagin dance, a reaction to Sri Lanka players using the same celebration previously. Amid all the drama, a glass door had also been shattered in the Bangladesh dressing room. Shakib admitted that the players, himself included, had perhaps allowed their emotions to get the better of them. He apologised later, but the BCB didn't make any public mention of their opinion of the incident.

The ICC ban, October, 2019
Days after he led a successful players' strike against the cricket board, the ICC banned Shakib for two years for failing to report an approach from a bookie. He returned from this ban in January 2021.
