The NBA and the National Basketball Players Association have agreed to extend the play-in tournament format through the 2021-22 season, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski on Friday.
The NBA board of governors will soon make it official in a formal vote.
The format this season saw the seventh- and eighth-place teams play for the No. 7 seed, with the loser then hosting the winner of a game between the ninth- and 10th-place teams for the No. 8 seed.
Out of the 30 NBA teams, 24 had a chance to earn a spot in at least the play-in tournament over the final two weeks of the 2020-21 regular season.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in May that his personal preference was for the play-in tournament to continue after this season, and that it was a success because of the incentive it gave teams to care until the end of the regular season.
"I haven't made any secret that I want it to be [around long term]," Silver said then.
ESPN's Tim Bontemps contributed to this report.
