Bayern Munich defeated Barcelona 3-0 thanks to a goal from Thomas Muller and a brace from Robert Lewandowski to open up Champions League group-stage action on Tuesday.

The game at Camp Nou pitted the two European giants for the first time since a quarterfinal matchup in 2020, which saw Bayern thrash Barca 8-2 in Lisbon.

In their first Champions League game since the departure of Lionel Messi, the Catalan side failed to record a single shot on target until the 65th minute of the match.

Muller opened up the scoring in the 34th minute with a right-footed shot off an assist by Leroy Sane.

Lewandowski then doubled the lead in the 56th minute off a rebound in front of Barca's net, then sealed the victory with a second-chance effort in the 78th minute.

It is Barcelona's seventh defeat to Bayern in Champions League play, the most losses to any single opponent in the competition.

"Bayern are really solid and we are what we are. It is what it is. At the end, we had a lot of kids on. We're Barca and I don't want to make excuses, though. We will see at the end of the season," Barca captain Gerard Pique said after the match.

With Camp Nou at 40% capacity, the fans took out their frustration on Sergi Roberto, who had a less than memorable performance playing out of position at right full-back and substituted off in the 60th minute.

"It hurts me a lot personally because I know him as a person, he's a great human being and loves this club more than anything. I would like to remind people he's not a full-back, either, and he's making a huge sacrifice by playing there. It hurts a lot," Pique said of his teammate.
