Impressively, Davi Fujii accounted for Puerto Rico’s Enrique Torres, the no.2 seed (9-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7), Stanley Hsu, who had remained unbeaten throughout the team event, overcame Hamilton Yamane, the no.4 seed and like Davi Fujii from Brazil (11-8, 11-8, 12-10).

Defeats for Enrique Torres and Hamilton Yamane but there was consolation; it was there only defeat of the day, both finished in second places and thus advanced to the main draw.

Somewhat differently for Steven Moreno, the top seed and also from Puerto Rico, it was first place in the group without due alarm, as it was for Hamilton Yamane, the no.4 seed, similarly from Brazil.

Top names secure first places

Notably, in the initial phase of the under 13 girls’ singles, the leading names all ended the day unbeaten, first place in their respective groups and safely through to the knock-out stage was the outcome.

It was a successful day for Ecuador’s Anie Rubio and Maybelline Menendez, as it was for Lin Yishiuan of the United States and the Dominican Republic’s Dafne Sosa.

Mixed fortunes

Meanwhile, in the under 11 age group, for the players who had claimed gold the previous day there were mixed fortunes.

In the boys’ singles event, Colombia’s Emanuel Otalvaro remained unbeaten to top his group but colleague, Juan Pineros experienced defeat. He lost to Brian Wu of the United States (3-11, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9, 12-10) and had to settle for second place.

Brian Wu remained unbeaten to top the group.

Similarly, in the girls’ singles, Tashiya Piyadasa remained unbeaten but her United States compatriot lost to Ecuador’s Karolayn Maldonado (11-4, 11-5, 11-7); as with Juan Pineros it was runners up spot and a place in the main draw, for Karolayn Maldonado, unbeaten in first position.

Schedule

The main draw in the boys’ singles and girls’ singles events in each age group commences on Saturday 23rd October.

On Friday 22nd October, the focus is on boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles.
