Robert Lewandowski scored his 60th goal this calendar year as champions Bayern Munich claimed a 2-1 home win over Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday to end the visiting side's unbeaten start to the season.

Leroy Sane and Niklas Sule spurned good chances early on before Bayern took a deserved lead in the 30th minute through Leon Goretzka, who was unselfishly played in by Thomas Muller after Freiburg lost possession on the edge of the box.

The visitors sat deep after the break and soaked up the pressure from Bayern but almost conceded a second before the hour-mark when Goretzka struck the post with a low shot following a dummy from Sane.

Freiburg denied Goretzka again minutes later, but Lewandowski netted a second in the 75th minute with a finish from close range after some smart work down the left from Alphonso Davies. Freiburg scored an injury-time consolation through Janik Haberer.

Bayern top the league table with 28 points from 11 games, four points ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who play RB Leipzig later on Saturday. Freiburg are third on 22 points.

"We shouldn't forget that we played against a good team today. The most important thing was to win the game, which we did. It was incredibly important to score the second goal, because you can always concede at any time," said Goretzka.

"Our goal was to win today as it's the last game before the international break. It wasn't a good feeling when we lost just before the last international break. Therefore we are very happy today," the Germany international added.

Freiburg created a flurry of chances on the counter-attack towards the end but Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was up to the task, making a number of key saves.

Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann said: "In my opinion, he is still the best goalkeeper in the world. It was remarkable how he saved us... it doesn't look like he's 35 years old."

Neuer was finally beaten by Haberer in the third minute of stoppage time, but Bayern held on for the win.

"I think we deserved the win, even though the first 10 minutes weren't good. Freiburg defended well and put a lot of pressure. The second goal was a relief. In the end we conceded an unfortunate goal," Nagelsmann added.
