Ospreys: Covid-hit Welsh Champions Cup trip off with Racing 92 awarded 28-0 win

Covid-19 cases in the Ospreys camp mean their European Champions Cup game against Racing 92 on Saturday is off.

Tournament organisers European Professional Club Rugby (EPCR) have awarded Racing a 28-0, bonus-point win "in accordance with" competition rules.

EPCR say Ospreys informed them of their Covid cases.

"As a consequence, the club is not in a position to safely fulfil its Heineken Champions Cup, Round 2 fixture against Racing 92," said EPCR.

The clubs' body added: "EPCR would like to emphasise that awarding the match to Racing 92 is a tournament management measure with the objective of ensuring that all fixtures in the 2021/22 Heineken Champions Cup are accounted for, and not a sanction."

Meanwhile, tournament bosses are meeting to discuss whether new French travel restrictions will impact on more second-round games.

France is restricting travel for those arriving from the UK amid concerns over the Omicron variant.

And EPCR added that it "is in contact with the French authorities in order to understand the new travel measures and to assess if any matches in round two are affected".

English clubs Wasps and Bristol are also scheduled to be in France at the weekend, with the former at Toulouse and latter at Stade Francais in Europe's top flight on Sunday.

Saracens' Challenge Cup trip to Pau has already fallen victim to Covid, while Montpellier have, like Racing, been awarded a 28-0 win against Covid hit Leinster.

Lyon are due at Dragons in the second-tier Challenge Cup on Friday, the first of the French clubs scheduled to be in the UK over the weekend.
