Details and results from Mansfield, Pontefract and Beckenham as historic English area events feature some exciting races

Midland Championships, Mansfield, Nottingham, January 29

Storm Malik blew hard over Berry Hill Park and played a part in race tactics but Doug Musson and Katie Holt had no problems in coming out on top in the senior races, albeit with different tactics, Martin Duff reports.

One official was not so fortunate as club tents seemed to have a life of their own in the gale force winds. Mary Williams, part of the announcing team, was struck not once but twice by flying club tents, despite the efforts of others to protect her from the flying debris.

Whilst there were athletes from a host of clubs competing, in most races, many of them had trouble in fielding enough runners to feature in the team results on a pretty much bone-dry course.

Senior men
If there was an effect caused by the wind it seemed to show most in the senior men’s event over four 3km laps of the woodland and park. The first half of the race saw up to 10 men trying to keep out of the teeth of the wind, which was at its worst in the afternoon. After three laps, it was down to just four, with leading veteran Alastair Watson running isolated in fifth.

Doug Musson (Martin Duff)

Keen to show at the head of the group, at different times, were Sam Moakes, Edward Buck and former winner Jack Gray but, after each mini-break, the field came back together again before, on the edge of the woods, with about 700 metres to run, Musson suddenly changed gear and sprinted clear of the rest before coming home 10 seconds clear of Gray, with Jack Miller a close third.

It was a blistering burst from the 27-year-old who used his former 1:52 800 metre speed to good effect after sitting in for most of the 12 km.

Musson said: “It was cat and mouse with the wind and I was going to try and leave it to the last 100 metres.” However, he went earlier, as the leaders threaded their way through the inevitable melee of back markers, on the multi-lap course, but added of his break, “if you are going to make a break then make it decisive.”

Musson now goes for the English National but said: “That was my first cross-country for two years but you couldn’t turn up to Parliament Hill without a race.”

Second-placed Gray followed the break and had, himself, tried to get away mid-race but had to be satisfied with his second Midland silver to go with his winning gold medal from the 2019 event in Leamington.

Bets were on Musson’s Notts AC to take the team little but third placed Jack Millar led Bristol & West to what they said was their first ever Midland senior men’s team win, after they closed in their six scorers in the top 31 places.
Tipton were a clear third.

The Midland Masters championship was held concurrently but the leading veteran on show, fifth placed Watson, was not affiliated, so the championship went to Joe Smith in 23rd overall.

Senior women
Katie Holt took the senior women’s event over three laps totalling 8km after leading virtually from start to finish. The City of Stoke runner led the initial charge into the wind, as new Birchfield signing Lily Partridge was initially in second before dropping back into the chasing pack, then coming again at the end.

As the race progressed and the ups and downs in the wooded area came and went, Holt gradually increased her lead until finally opening it out to all of 40 seconds. Holt said: “The race went exactly as planned and I did what I came to do. I thought that I might sit in for two km,” she added but she was soon in front on the first lap in the woods.

Kate Maltby and Hannah Robinson were prominent throughout but neither could hold off a determined last lap from Partridge in her new Birchfield Harriers kit. “I have joined my dad’s old club,” she said in reference for former Birchfield stalwart Richard.

After dropping out of the Olympic Marathon Trials, the 30-year-old underwent an operation on a troublesome ankle. She said: “I had surgery in June after being out from March to May and had a big bone cut out that was inflaming my bursa.”

Of her comeback she added: “It always takes longer than you would want, but cross-country is good for strength.”

After a few parkruns late last year, Partridge made a tentative return in the Midland women’s League two weeks ago before this medal winning outing.

Robinson was the second Birchfield runner to score in fourth and they took the team honours from Charnwood whose early prominent Sophie Coldwell was their first scorer in seventh spot, just ahead of former winner and top veteran Juliet Potter.

U20 men
Charnwood also provided the winner of the U20 men’s race as Ethan O’Shea led home Rushcliffe’s James Wardle but Birchfield took team honours. It was a bit of a jog at the start of their race and O’Shea said: “Nobody wanted to go against the wind.”

Finally, out of the woods the race came to life and the battle for gold was over.

U17 men
Alexander Adams has been dominating the West Midlands Young Athletes’ League this winter and did the same here, to win the title, but only after a steady start. He said: “I usually go off quick but here, nobody wanted to go, then I went and no-one came with me, but it was really tough and the wind was horrible.”

U15 boys
Birchfield had earlier taken their second team gold, in the under-15 race, being led home by Ash Burgess but he had to concede to City of Stoke’s Nathanial Rowe in the individual stakes.

Staffordshire champion Rowe said: “I’ve only done two races as I didn’t think I was ready.”

He proved that he was as and, after holding back early on, went away for a 40-metre victory.

Bromsgrove and Redditch and Solihull took the minor medals.

Hamilton-James said: “My plan was to hang in, with something to work towards,” but she soon forged out in front but added: “on the second lap the wind really catches you.”

Under-17 women
There was a group of six early on in the U17 women’s race before Isabelle Price made a break to take the title and give Wolverhampton & Bilston a single point team win over Charnwood. “I was using the other girls against the wind then decided to take it to the line,” said Price.

Under-15 girls
Wreake & Soar Valley looked to build on their earlier team success in the U13 girls’ race and this featured the most anticipated battle of the day between Shaikira King and Zoe Gilbody.

King, whose father said she had “thrown up three times on the start line,” nevertheless made a blistering start as Gilbody held back. Towards the end of their first of two laps, the team-mates came together before it was Gilbody who edged away then finished strongly for a 50-metre victory as their Wreake & Soar Valley club placed six in the first 18 runners and won by a massive 54 points from Rugby and Wolverhampton.

“The last time I beat her was in the London Mini-Marathon, said the winner” and, talking about the course, added: “it was tough with some sharp hills.”

Under-13 girls
Wreake & Soar Valley had Violet Rudkin and Luan Power officially second and third behind winner Olivia McGhee. Second across the line had been Lily Mason of Mansfield but she was disqualified for running without a timing chip. She had reported the loss of it before the race, but officials were then unable to track her down with a replacement before the race got underway.

McGhee’s experience of the conditions was sought after, as her race was first away. She said: “It was pretty windy and it wasn’t the nicest course, dry but pretty tough.”

Start Fitness Northern Cross-Country Championships, Pontefract, West Yorkshire

Hugo Milner and Eleanor Bolton took the senior titles as Storm Malik blew across the open spaces of the Pontefract racecourse, where horse racing is first recorded as occurring back in 1648. It was a different selection of thoroughbreds on duty in the stiff winds of 2022.

Senior men
For Milner, it was a return to form after a disappointing Euro Cross Trials race in Liverpool, which followed British Athletics Cross Challenge victories in Cardiff and Milton Keynes. The Derby runner also posted the fastest first lap in the National cross-country relay championship during his purple autumn patch at Mansfield back in November.
Here he headed Sale’s Nigel Martin, whose best in this championship were a couple of fifth places, after a tight race.

Salford narrowly won an exciting team contest as both Leeds and Hallamshire finished within 10 points.

Senior women

Eleanor Bolton won from Sophie Tarver and Olympic triathlon relay gold medallist Georgia Taylor-Brown, but margins were no more than a few seconds between the placers and fourth placed Lauren Heyes.

For Bolton, who was 26th in the Euro under-23 championships in Abbottstown, it was an improvement on her seventh place when the Northern championship was last held in 2020.

Heyes ran in the senior race in the Euros and was ahead of Bolton in fifth in this event back in 2020.

It was close in the team event with Vale Royal coming out on top by just two points from Hallamshire.

Under-20
Josh Dickinson, the English Junior 5000m champion last year, retained the title that he won in 2020 at Bedale.

This year, the 20-year-old Leeds City runner has already won the Yorkshire senior cross-country title.

Under-13 girls
Grace Igoe was only fourth behind Rotherham team mate Graihagh Turner in the Yorkshire championships, three weeks earlier, but overturned that deficit here to relegate her club rival to fourth behind Bailey Hughes and Molly Carvell in the U13 girls’ event. Nevertheless, only eight seconds separated the top four.

Liverpool took the team event from Rotherham.

South of England Championships, Beckenham Place Park, January 29

With Parliament Hill being saved for English National duties next month and original choice Brighton being unavailable, Beckenham Place Park proved a slightly controversial replacement.

The former public golf course is a good setting and has recently held South of Thames events and Surrey league races but there were concerns whether it could host a big championships event.

Despite initial problems – a lack of marshalls, tape and the usual crowds of public users who now flock to the park – the park did at least show some potential and was reasonably appreciated by the athletes except for the senior men who had to run four laps.

It did not help that the organisers chose not to use an open 2km loop that was used in previous events here and instead chose woodland with very narrow stony paths that caused a number of collisions further down with around half the men’s field lapped.

The organisers were probably lucky that less than 700 finished here compared to the near 1200 at Parliament Hill in 2020 where lapping was a problem but the course is much wider.

Senior men

Andy Coley-Maud regained the title he last won in 2017 in an exciting race.

First lap of the men’s race

Now 38 and having had to battle back from chronic fatigue which left him barely able to walk in 2020, he paced it perfectly and win by just five seconds.

Perhaps cautious with the season’s longest championships ahead and an unknown course a huge pack were together on the opening small lap and first big lap.

The 2020 runner-up Alex Leprêtre seemed to be happy to be at the front.

At the end of the first big lap after 13 minutes of running, the lead pack numbered 16 with Tom Frith and Alex Teuten close to the Highgate Harrier at the front.

Even though he said he did not make a particular effort to get away Teuten, the 2017 English and UK Inter-counties runner-up, eased away though behind Coley-Maud still looked controlled.

The towering Teuten said he found it difficult sometimes to negotiate the groups of lapped runners blocking the way on the very narrow stretches of course through the woods and nearly came to grief while the chasers said it was sometimes difficult to see what the gap ahead was among the sea of slower runners.

It was only on the last lap though that the Guildford and Godalming runner caught and passed Teuten and pushed on for an exciting victory but he still was checking over his shoulder up the final hill to ensure he had enough in hand to regain the title.

Teuten started the final climb just a few seconds back and clearly in second but he was picked off near the line by a fast-finishing Ben Alcock who won his first medal in the event having only been 32nd in the last running at Parliament Hill two years ago.

Men’s podium with winner Andy Coley-Maud centre

Ed Shepherd, third in 2019 was this time a reasonably close fourth while Essex champion Tom Frith completed the top five.

Olympic steeplechaser Zak Seddon finished 10th.

Teuten got further reward for his high placing when Southampton with six in 38 easily won the team race by 90 points from Highgate (six in 51) and Tonbridge (six in 94).

Senior women

Jess Gibbon leads early from Holly Dixon

Jess Gibbon, fifth at Liverpool and a brilliant 11th in the Europeans, already this winter, retained her title with ease.

South of England Inter-Counties winner Holly Dixon was the only runner to stay close initially and after around 12 minutes of running was around ten seconds down.

Over the second lap Gibbon extended her lead significantly and at the finish she had opened up a 50-second gap.

Despite the margin she said she had not found it easy and though enjoying the course had said parts were narrow especially where the general public were wandering among the runners.

She is hoping to run the English National in February and improve on her fourth in the last running at Nottingham in 2020.

It was former English and South of England under-17 champion Niamh Brown who won the battle for silver. She had also previously finished second in the under-15’s and twice in the under-20’s.

Third went to Beth Hawling, who was making her South of England debut but had impressed in her three Met League wins this winter and had been a solid 20th at Liverpool , 20 seconds ahead of Brown. Her medal came despite a heavy fall on one of the uneven descents.

Cabbage Patch 10 winner and sub-16 5000m performer Sarah Astin finished fourth ahead of a tiring Dixon.

Brown’s Aldershot comfortably won the team event by 28 points from Hawling’s London Heathside with Basingstoke and Mid Hants a close third with good packing from their four scorers between 12th and 26th.

Only 366 finished compared to the 694 that negotiated Parliament Hill two years ago.

Under-20 men’s race

Bedford’s Harry Brodie made his South of England debut by finishing 225th in 2014 and he followed up with 215th, 157th, 110th, 45th and third in 2020 and he maintained the improvement with a clear victory.

Ninth in Liverpool, he ran a strong second lap (over the same course as the senior women) and he took the title by 12 seconds from Tonbridge’s James Kingston, who had only been 17th at Liverpool but impressed by finishing second in the Kent senior championships earlier in the month.

Another Kent athlete took bronze as 2019 South of England winner Louis Small.

Small led his Ashford team to second place ahead of Tonbridge but it was Windsor, led by Samuel Hodgson in eighth, won the team race by 13 points.

Under-17 men’s race

Two years ago Edward Bird was fourth in the under-15 race at Parliament Hill but he improved vastly last year to win the English Schools’ and Schools International 3000m title and then carry that form into the winter, winning at Liverpool in November.

He ran a storming final mile to win by 13 seconds.

The runner-up Luke Birdseye also won a ESAA and Schools International double last summer over the steeplechase in which he also won England and South of England titles.

Almost half a minute back Hayden Gear won the battle for bronze.

Bird had a further bonus as he led Poole to a clear team victory with former English National champion Will Rabjohns fifth for them.

Birdseye’s Windsor were second and South London third.

Under-15 boys race

There was an exciting finish to the day’s opening race which was held up by 10 minutes due to a lack of sufficient marshalls in place.

At one stage Sussex Champion Owen Wallek, who is enjoying his first cross-country season surged clear but wasn’t quite clear due to a lack of marshalls and tape where to approach the finish and lost a little of his lead as he strayed off course.

Alex Dack, the English Schools’ 1500m fourth-placer, unleashed a tremendous sprint up the final hill to win by six seconds.

Two seconds behind Wallek came Essex Schools’ champion Sam Plummer.

The English Schools 1500m champion and 2020 English National under-13 winner Alden Collier finished fourth and led Chiltern Harriers to a significant 62 point win over Cambridge and Coleridge and Tonbridge.

Under-13 boys race

Jake Meyburgh has dominated this age group all winter so far and having run a 15:57 parkrun in October, it was no surprise that he wuld have a significant edge and the Windsor Slough and Eton athlete won by a big margin considering the short distance as he sped around the one lap of the course in 10:17, 19 seconds clear of Lucas Elmqvist.

Back in December, Meyburgh had won the South of England Inter-Counties at nearby Croydon from Caspian Holmes and Freddie Rowe with Elmqvist fourth and here Holmes again got the better of Rowe as they shared the third-place time of 10:38, two seconds back on the Blackheath and Bromley athlete who enjoyed a special day as he led his team to a clear win over Brighton and Meyburgh’s Windsor.

Under-20 women

Based on her superb 14th in the Europeans where she was second scorer in Britain’s medal-winning team. Ellen Weir was the favourite but she had been ill since and had to settle for an isolated third but it was still her first major championship cross-country medal.

Up ahead the title was decided between Lewes’ Harriet Bloor and Aldershot’s Pippa Roessler.

Bloor, who had been ten seconds down on Weir at Liverpool in ninth, proved to have the strongest finish on the final hill as she also won her first major medal on the country though she had won the South of England title at 1500m last summer.

Roessler matched her position from the South of England Inter Counties last month and finished three seconds back here but 49 seconds ahead of her Croydon conqueror Megan Harris who was fourth.

Only two teams finished in a disappointingly supported event with Cambridge and Coleridge led in by Frances Haines in 24th pipped Aldershot by three points.

The Croydon inter-counties result was replicated here as Hattie Reynolds gained her biggest win to date but the North Norfolk Harrier’s strong final kilometre stretched her winning margin from five seconds last month to 11 over Sussex champion Yasmin Kashdan.

Holly Lathwell, only 182nd in her last South of England race in 2020 showed her great improvement by finishing a clear third just hree seconds back on Kashdan.

Windsor, led by Rachel Clutterbuck in seventh, were clear team winners by 43 points from Kashdan’s Crawley with Blackheath third.

Under-15 Girls

Katie Pye, only second in the Surrey Championships earlier in the month, and ninth in the Southern Inter Counties last month, won an exciting race by just two seconds as she used a strong finish to gain yet another win in this age group for Aldershot Farnham and District.

Chasing her hard all the way to the line was newcomer Ella Davey who was contesting her first major cross-country individual event

Sussex champion Grace Tuesday, who had had a clear lead well into the final mile, finished a close third, well clear of 2020 bronze medallist Abigail Reid, who had been second ahead well clear of Pye and Tuesday in Croydon.

Blackheath and Bromley dominated the team event led in by Megan Slattery in sixth winning by a huge 51 points from Tuesday’s Lewes and Davey’s Windsor.

Under-13 girls

Just three seconds covered the three medallists in another exciting finish.

The Cambridgeshire champion Jemima Davey, who competes for Midlands’ club Kettering had the strongest kick as she repelled the challenges of Isla Hall and Katherine Haslip.

Davey, who had finished 22nd in the 2020 Midlands Championships, used the speed that had seen her finish third in the South of England 800m championships last summer.

Jersey’s Hampshire champion Hall and Brighton Phoenix’s barely raced Haslip, who is isn’t 12 until November, shared the same time.

Marshall Milton Keynes led by Croydon runner-up Katie Webb, in fourth came out on top from Chelmsford and Aldershot.
