ESSEX LEAGUE, Hainault Forest, January 22

Ahmed Abdullah, who was second in the London championships in November, won for Ilford and relegated Jack Gray to second, nearly 200 metres down, Martin Duff reports.

However, it is Gray, the 2019 National sixth placer, who was second this winter in the Midland 7-miles championship, who leads in the overall standings.

Will Nuttall notched up his third under-17 men’s victory as Sam Plummer, the East Anglian champion also make it three wins, as did under-13 Freddie Rowe.

Charlotte Bishop took her second victory in the senior women’s race, again from top veteran Lindsey Colman, who led Southend to a team victory.

Third placed women’s team Orion Harriers were not helped by a clash with the Chingford League.

The under-17 and under-20 women all ran together and it was Megan Harris and Sophie Megson who headed the top U17 Natalie Sewell. Harris, the Eastern champion, who has suffered only one loss in the past 12 months and that was when she was ninth in the Euro Cross Trials.

Sussex Masters Championships, Lancing, West Sussex, January 22

Coombe Farm again played host to this event and it provided a first Sussex Masters cross-country title for 45-year-old James Baker, Martin Duff reports.

This overall victory, in his first outing in a Sussex veteran’s championship, was his 980th in all competitions and he hopes to reach the 1000 mark this year.

Despite Chichester Runners team mate Mike Houston placing second, 35 metres adrift, the pair had no back up of note and had to concede the team championship to Brighton Phoenix, who were led home by fourth placed John Clays. Toby Meanwell was third to help Lewes to silver.

Phoenix also took the M50 team award but their Paul Wishart placed third behind Triathlete Morris Tarragano and Stewart Gregory.

There was a return to competition for Emma Footman, who retained the title that she won at the same venue back in 2020. The victory was over top W45 Dani Tarleton by some 70 metres.

Now 41, the four-time South of England steeplechase champion and southern cross-country bronze medallist in 2016, had also won the Sussex senior title back in 2012 and 2013.

Footman, a proud mother of two daughters, said: “I didn’t think I would be back racing so soon but have been feeling great, through training, after the birth of Kiki 10 weeks ago. Having raced the course two years ago, I went into it unsure of my fitness and thinking I would tuck in and see how the first lap evolved.”

However, Footman was already ahead after a few hundred metres and said she was surprised. “Especially with the savage climb that faced you on the start of each lap,” she said. “As I got to the top of the first climb, I felt I could push on a bit so I did. I then ran scared for the remainder and kept a 50m lead.”

The W55 category saw Geraldine Moffat narrowly defeat England W50 international Caroline Wood. Moffat set a lifetime best half-marathon of 88:11 in Brighton last year to go fourth on the W55 rankings for the year, but does most of her racing in parkruns.
