A new era for professional table tennis has started today in Singapore as the city is hosting the first-ever WTT Grand Smash. Grand Smashes are WTT’s most prestigious events, and winning one will become the dream of all table tennis players. For two weeks, the table tennis community will see all the innovations World Table Tennis brought to the game in a world-class event, with engaging fan-centric content.
“WTT is really coming to life,” said Steve Dainton, ITTF Group CEO and WTT Director. “It has taken a lot of hard work to host this first Grand Smash, and we had to overcome a great number of challenges. But the dream has finally come true, and the team can’t wait to showcase what they have prepared for so long. The best players are here, the venue looks fantastic, ticket sales are strong, ten sponsors support the event, and the fan zone is filled with exciting activities. The table tennis family is about to witness something truly special.”
The Singapore Smash will become the first of the four new pillars of professional table tennis. Fans will be treated to two weeks of incredible knockout elimination table tennis action with singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions, as players compete for USD2,000,000 in prize money, the largest ever seen at an officially sanctioned table tennis event.
The event’s main draw will take place from 11 to 20 March 2022 and consists of a 64-player draw for the Singles events (men and women), a 24-pair draw for Men’s and Women’s Doubles, and a 16-pair draw for Mixed Doubles. The Singles events will be preceded by a 64-Draw qualifying competition from 7 to 9 March. All champions will receive 2,000 ITTF Table Tennis World Ranking Points.
WTT is the commercial and events platform of the ITTF Group. Ever since its launch in 2021, WTT events have merged sport and entertainment to offer fans and spectators a fresh and dynamic experience. WTT has also led the table tennis digital transformation and opened up new revenue streams for the sport.
