Berry Races His Way Into Clash, Shows Promise

Published in Racing
Monday, 03 February 2025 07:57

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Josh Berry and the No. 21 Wood Brothers Racing team did themselves and their car owners proud in Sundays Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium.

Racing at the legendary track that is so special to the Wood Brothers, Berry put on a spirited, aggressive performance in the 75-lap Last Chance Qualifier to finish second and put the No. 21 Mustang in the 200-lap Main event. Berry then started 22nd in the feature and raced his way to 13th despite some damage from his hard drive to second place in the LCQ.

Berry said after the non-points-paying exhibition that he considered his first drive in the No. 21 Mustang a success and an enjoyable experience on the tight quarter-mile track where the late team owner Glenn Wood counted four points-paying Cup races among his 29 overall victories there.

It was a lot of fun, Berry said. I thought the guys did a really good job of making the car better and adjusting on it from practice and the heat race to give me a really good car for the feature.

Berry mentioned he was a bit disappointed he didnt finish higher.

I felt like we definitely had more potential there, he said. I wish things would have gone different in the feature, but overall Im really happy with it. Our goal was to come here and make the race, and we did that and got a decent finish. For the first time out it was a lot of fun.

Berrys performance in the Last Chance Qualifier was a big part of the story of that race.

After starting 13th, he initially dropped back one spot before working his way into the top 10 on lap 21. He steadily worked his way forward and cracked the top five for the first time on lap 59. Berry, finding success in both the inside and outside lanes, took the lead on lap 66 as Erik Jones and Kyle Larson, Berrys chief rivals at that point, collided and brought out the races seventh caution.

Berry held the top spot for six laps but lost the lead to Larson with four laps remaining. Berry held the runner-up spot to the checkered flag, and the races last lead change wasnt a big factor as both the first- and second-place finishers advanced to the 200-lap main event.

After the qualifier, he told reporters at the track that he was very pleased to get the Wood Brothers car in the main event at Bowman Gray.

This is a really special place for them, he said. They gave me a great opportunity, and they deserve to be in this race. They are great people and have been in the sport for 75 years, and Im going to go out there and do my best week-in and week-out.

If that means I have to knock some people around to get in the Clash Im going to do it.

Reports: Jackets forward's jaw broken on bench

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kirill Marchenko suffered a broken jaw after getting hit in the face by a puck while on the bench during Sunday's loss to the Dallas Stars, according to multiple media reports.

Defenseman Dante Fabbro also left the game in the first period with a concussion, according to reports.

Marchenko, who has a team-leading 21 goals in addition to 34 assists for the Blue Jackets this season, was sitting on the bench when the stray puck struck the left side of his face late in the second period. He left the bench area, holding a towel to his jaw.

He was taken to a Dallas-area hospital to have his jaw reset, according to reports. It was unclear how much time he would miss, but it could be at least six weeks.

The 24-year-old is enjoying a breakout season, already setting career highs in assists, points (55) and ice time (18:48) in just 53 games. His plus-31 rating leads the NHL.

The team said Fabbro has suffered an upper-body injury.

The Blue Jackets, who have won three of their past four games, conclude a four-game road trip on Tuesday against the Buffalo Sabres. Columbus sits in the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, just a point ahead of the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins, entering Monday's games.

Sam Kerr racially abused police officer, court told

Published in Soccer
Monday, 03 February 2025 09:47

Chelsea forward and Australia captain Sam Kerr went on trial in a London court on Monday, accused of racially abusing a white police officer after a drunken dispute with a taxi driver.

Kerr told the officer Stephen Lovell: "You guys are f---ing stupid and white."

Kerr, who has Indian ancestry, accepts saying those words but has pleaded not guilty to one count of racially aggravated harassment. Her lawyer argued she was making a comment about power and privilege.

The 31-year-old sat in the dock at Kingston Crown Court as prosecutor Bill Emlyn Jones told jurors that she and her partner Kristie Mewis, who plays for West Ham United, called a taxi in the early hours of Jan. 30, 2023 after a night out.

"Their cab journey did not go well," Emlyn Jones said.

"The cabbie ended up phoning the police to complain about their behaviour, reporting that they were trying to smash a window".

The taxi driver took them to a police station instead of Kerr's home, after which she made the comment about Lovell's ethnicity, Emlyn Jones said.

He added that there was no dispute over what Kerr said, meaning jurors had to decide what she meant and how it made Lovell feel.

Kerr's lawyer Grace Forbes said that Kerr's words did not make her a criminal. "The law is a little more nuanced, a little more human than that," she argued.

"Sam Kerr did not feel hostility to the officer because he is white. The words were a comment, we say -- however poorly expressed -- about positions of power, about privilege and about how those things might colour perception."

Kerr has scored 199 career goals across the Women's Super League, Australia's W-League and the NWSL.

She is also Australia's all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 128 appearances, but has been sidelined since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in January 2024.

Her trial is expected to conclude this week.

Source: Joao Félix set for Milan loan from Chelsea

Published in Soccer
Monday, 03 February 2025 09:47

AC Milan are closing in on a loan deal for Chelsea forward João Félix, a source has told ESPN.

The 25-year-old is expected to move to Italy in an agreement which would see Milan pay a loan fee in the region of 2m-3m ($2m-$3m). The Serie A club would also be paying all of his wages.

Félix had attracted interest from several other clubs including Aston Villa but Chelsea's preference has always been for the Portugal international to join a club outside England.

Félix only joined Chelsea last August in a 50m deal from Atlético Madrid to begin his second spell at the club after spending the second half of the 2022-23 campaign on loan at Stamford Bridge.

However, Félix has started just three Premier League games under head coach Enzo Maresca and is keen on kickstarting his career at a new club.

Should a deal by finalised, Félix will become Milan's second signing in the current window after Kyle Walker's arrival from Manchester City.

Wrexham unveil plans for 5,500-capacity stand

Published in Soccer
Monday, 03 February 2025 09:47

Wrexham have released images of their new plans for a Kop stand at their home ground, the Stok Racecourse.

The "unique designs" for the new 5,500-capacity stand are said to create an atmospheric home and become an iconic destination for fans, international visitors and the local community.

The stand, designed by leading sports and entertainment architects Populous, includes the provision for safe standing, hospitality and accessible seating and will be a prominent focal point of the area visible from the city centre.

It will be fully compliant with UEFA Category 4 stadium requirements and along with adjustment to the pitch, and other technical requirements, this will enable the Stok Racecourse Stadium to host the UEFA European under-19 Championship final tournament matches in 2026, and other international matches in the future.

"The new Kop Stand marks a special moment in the history of the STōK Cae Ras," Wrexham's chief executive officer Michael Williamson said.

"The distinctive design of the new Kop Stand embodies the history and heritage of Wrexham -- rooted in the local community creating a timeless, authentic piece of civic architecture that complements other landmarks.

"It will provide an iconic landmark standing at the gateway to the city giving it a true sense of place.

"The stand reflects the key role the football club can play in the rejuvenation and redevelopment of the city through its role in the Wrexham Gateway Project.

"The upgrading of facilities to meet UEFA Category 4 specifications are central to our wider vision of bringing international sport back to Wrexham and the benefit this will bring to the local community of hosting these events in North Wales."

Sources: Tel set to join Spurs on loan after U-turn

Published in Soccer
Monday, 03 February 2025 09:47

Mathys Tel is set to perform a dramatic deadline day U-turn by agreeing a loan deal to join Tottenham after stalling over a move to the club last week, sources have told ESPN.

The player's representative, Gadiri Camara, shared a picture on Instagram of himself on an airplane along with Tel and sources say their destination is Spurs after a breakthrough in negotiations.

The exact structure of the deal is not yet finalised but sources say it is likely to be a straight loan with no option or obligation of a permanent move for the 19-year-old France youth international.

Tel's decision to express a desire to leave Bayern Munich over a lack of game time -- having joined the club for around 28 million ($29m) from Rennes in 2022 -- sparked interest from a number of clubs including Manchester United and Arsenal.

Chelsea were already in contact with Bayern over Tel and a possible swap deal involving Christopher Nkunku but those talks failed to progress.

Sources have told ESPN that United were open to a loan move -- potentially with an option to make the move permanent -- but no agreement was close while Arsenal did not seriously pursue the player.

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy flew to Munich on Friday to hold face-to-face talks with the player and his representatives but Tel ultimately left those conversations unconvinced of his next move.

However, with an early transfer deadline in Germany of just 5 p.m CET. compared to England's 11 p.m GMT., Tel has now decided to join Spurs after conversations with manager Ange Postecoglou and is due in London later on Monday for medical tests ahead of signing a short-term contract.

Spurs had initially agreed a 60m deal for Tel but he was unsure over making a permanent move. Talks then switched to a loan so Spurs could get their man, and Tel could review his options in the summer.

Head and Sutherland take top Australia awards

Published in Cricket
Monday, 03 February 2025 03:40

It was the first time for each player to win Australian cricket's highest individual honours. While Head was a favourite for the top men's prize, also claiming the one-day international player award, Sutherland was third in the one-day voting and a distant sixth for the women's T20I international award.

But she was awarded top votes for the two Tests played by the Australian women in the voting period over the past 12 months, most recently scoring 163 at the MCG as the hosts capped their Ashes whitewash.

The extra weighting for the Test votes proved the difference for Sutherland. It is the first time she has won any of the top women's categories - the Belinda Clark Award, the ODI or the T20I player.

"For me, I love batting, probably my Test record shows that, and I try and make the most of that when I get out in the middle," Sutherland said.

Head, who received his award from head coach Andrew McDonald at the team hotel in Galle, was a clear winner of the Allan Border Medal and is the first South Australian to claim the award. He also won the ODI category for the first time.

Head polled 208 votes for the Border Medal, well clear of Josh Hazlewood's 158, with Australian Test captain Pat Cummins third on 147.

Head is coming off a bumper 12 months across. The 31-year-old scored a staggering 1427 runs across all three formats in the 12-month polling period that began with Australia's home Test series against West Indies last January, and ended with the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Smith has the next-most runs with 806, while only Adam Zampa (31) played more games than Head (29) in the voting period.
A blistering 140 off 141 balls in his home Test match at the Adelaide Oval against India was an undeniable highlight for Head, and helped reignite Australia's series after their heavy loss in the first match in Perth.

Asked for the highlight of his past 12 months, Head said: "I feel like the Indian series, the Test series that's just gone. Nice to contribute. It's such a big five or six weeks."

Sutherland polled 168 to win ahead of Ashleigh Gardner, who won the Belinda Clark Award last year. Gardner polled 143 and Beth Mooney was third on 115, with Gardner and Mooney two-time winners.

While none of the top men's winners were at the Monday night awards function in Melbourne due mostly to the current tour of Sri Lanka, the women were celebrating in the room after they dominated the Ashes series.

Mooney and Zampa were named the top T20I players, while Gardner took out the women's ODI category and Hazlewood the men's Test honour.

Boxing Day Test sensation Sam Konstas was named the Bradman Young Men's Cricketer of the Year.

Next season's SA20 likely to begin on Boxing Day

Published in Cricket
Monday, 03 February 2025 07:19

The next edition of the SA20, season four, is set to kick off on Boxing Day 2025. This was announced on Monday, with the league firming up windows for the next three editions ahead of this season's playoffs. Bringing the start of the league forward to Christmas week - prime time in the South African cricket calendar - was possible because South Africa do not have any home Tests scheduled over the 2025-26 summer.

Seasons five and six will revert to second-week-of-January starts, likely beginning on January 9 in both 2027 and 2028, with the season stretching five to six days longer than the ongoing one. CSA confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that the dates announced were not specific start and end dates, but windows within which the league will be played.

In 2025-26, South Africa travel to India for an all-format tour in November-December before returning home for the SA20, which will conclude by January 26. Then, South Africa host West Indies for a T20I series.

Starting the SA20 on Boxing Day would have an impact on player availability, with the Ashes on in Australia, running till January 8. Joe Root for one, who was on the podium this season for most runs ahead of the playoffs, will be one of the players to almost surely to miss the start next time.

Bringing next season up should ease the competition for players with the ILT20 a bit - for their first three seasons, both tournaments ran concurrently almost from start to final - but there will still be a significant clash with the Big Bash League in Australia and the Bangladesh Premier League, both of which usually begin in December.

"Confirming the Betway SA20 window for a three-year period allows the League to bring certainty to all stakeholders and assists in securing our place when planning the global calendar,'' SA20 commissioner Graeme Smith said. "We know fans respond particularly well to weekend and holiday fixtures, and with the ICC T20 World Cup in early February next year, our Season 4 dates provide the unique opportunity to capitalise on South Africa's peak cricket season and key public holidays.

"Early planning has also meant that we are able to look at an extended window from 2026-27 and this will optimise scheduling, logistics and the fan experience."

Spacing the games out more would be welcome by most players and support staff. Robin Peterson, MI Cape Town's head coach, said on Sunday night after his team gave their bench game time in a dead rubber against Pretoria Capitals: "Definitely more space should be helpful, to be honest with you. It feels as though we play, we're on a plane and then next day we play again. That's one of the challenges of this tournament.

"It's not only that it's tough cricket on the field; it's the scheduling, the planning, who needs to take a break, how you put your squad together that adds an extra dimension to the thought process. I do feel that a little bit more downtime would be helpful."

A SA20 media release said decisions on the windows were taken into account by "a working group made up of representatives from both the League and Cricket South Africa".

SA20 windows for the next three seasons

SA20 season four: December 26, 2025, to January 26, 2026
SA20 season five: January 9 to February 14, 2027
SA20 season six: January 9 to February 13, 2028

Hridoy and Ali put Fortune Barishal in BPL final

Published in Cricket
Monday, 03 February 2025 08:19

Fortune Barishal 150 for 1 (Hridoy 82*, Malan 34*) beat Chittagong Kings 149 for 9 (Shamim 79, Parvez 36, Ali 5-24) by nine wickets

Fortune Barishal became the first team to reach this season's BPL final when they swept past Chittagong Kings with a nine-wicket win in the first qualifier. This is the franchise's third final since the pandemic, having won the trophy last year. They await the winner of the second qualifier on Wednesday, between Khulna Tigers and Chittagong.

Mohammad Ali was Barishal's lynchpin with the ball, the Pakistan seamer taking his maiden five-wicket haul in T20s. Ali, who was playing his first match for Barishal this season, took the third five-wicket haul in this year's BPL, following Taskin Ahmed and Faheem Ashraf. He also became the first bowler to take four wickets in an over in the BPL.
Then it was Towhid Hridoy's turn to wow the crowd, who had been desperate for some good cricket. Hridoy cracked his first fifty in this BPL campaign, getting Barishal to the target in 17.2 overs.

Mayers' swingers dupe top-order

Kyle Mayers' last over in the BPL was a disaster. He gave away 30 runs in the last over bowling to Rangpur Riders' Nurul Hasan in Sylhet. Having played ten matches in the ILT20, Mayers returned to the BPL with a bang. He removed Khawaja Nafay in the first over, getting his inswinger to zip into the batter's off-stump. Mayers then had the dangerous Graham Clark caught in the covers in his next over, reducing Chittagong to 14 for 2.

Captain Mohammad Mithun and Haider Ali were dismissed as they tried to counterattack, both falling to big shots in the powerplay. Hridoy took a superb catch in the deep to remove Mithun for 1, while Ebadot Hossain cleaned up a swinging Haider in the sixth over.

Shamim keeps Chittagong in the hunt

The task to recover was a big one but Shamim and Parvez added 77 runs for the fifth wicket. Parvez allowed Shamim to go for the shots, before opening up himself. He struck three fours and two sixes in his run-a-ball 36. Shamim meanwhile kept Chittagong in the contest, with his second fifty in this season's BPL. Shamim's nine fours and four sixes included some of his trademark sweeps, cuts and switch hits. One of his sixes was the no-look flick against the veteran offspinner Mahmudullah.

Ali takes four in an over

Till this point, Ali bowled three steady overs, picking up one wicket. Bowling the penultimate over, there was a bit of pressure on him, but Shamim, Chittagong's last recognised batter, wanted to get on strike too. Ali bowled his back of the hand slower ball to remove Khaled Ahmed, before Shamim's attempted switch hit found Ebadot at short third. Arafat Sunny and Aliss Al Islam were also undone by Ali's slower balls, who ended up taking four wickets in the 19th over.

Hridoy anchors Barishal chase

Hridoy and Tamim Iqbal added 55 runs for the opening stand, steadying their 150-run chase in the first nine overs. Tamim fell for 29 off 26 balls, with four boundaries, when Nafay took the catch in the deep off Khaled's bowling. Dawid Malan was attacking from the word go, which allowed Hridoy to go for the shots. He struck four boundaries and a six when he reached his fifty off 45 balls.

Lancashire have secured the IPL partner they wanted to run Manchester Originals as a joint venture, with Sanjiv Goenka's RPSG Group submitting the highest bid for a stake in the Hundred franchise on Monday.

RPSG Group, who own Lucknow Super Giants, were the losing bidders in a three-hour auction for a stake in London Spirit on Friday, which was eventually won by a Silicon Valley tech consortium valuing the Lord's-based franchise at 295 million. But RPSG Group has now secured a stake which values the Manchester-based Hundred at above 100m, understood to be around 116m.

The two parties will now enter into an eight-week period of exclusivity in which they will discuss the exact terms of the deal. Lancashire have previously suggested to members that they are open to a discussion about selling some of their 51% stake in the Originals if the price is high enough that it enables them to pay down a significant proportion of their bank debt.

The club declined to confirm on Monday night whether RPSG Group is buying anything more than the ECB's 49% stake in the Originals, though ESPNcricinfo understands that Lancashire told prospective investors that they were willing to part with up to 70% of the overall shares during talks earlier in the sales process.

Lancashire confirmed the news in a statement on Monday afternoon. "We have been very focused on securing a great partner - ideally from the IPL - and RPSG has been our preferred bidder for some time," the club said.

"We are delighted by the outcome and look forward to working together to create an exciting future. Together, we have a shared ambition to create a very special cricket team for the people of Manchester and the wider North West region."

ESPNcricinfo first revealed last August that officials from RPSG Group had visited Emirates Old Trafford, with Lancashire chief executive Daniel Gidney making clear in an interview his desire to work with an IPL franchise. Lancashire's initial shortlist also included Mumbai Indians owners Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), who dropped out of the bidding for Originals after securing a stake in Oval Invincibles last week.
Lancashire have actively grown their profile in India in recent years with a deliberate strategy that has included men's and women's pre-season tours and signing Indian internationals Shreyas Iyer, Washington Sundar and Venkatesh Iyer as overseas players. They are set to return to India next month as part of a pre-season tour.

Goenka, the chairman and founder of business conglomerate RPSG Group, paid INR 7090 crore (680m approx. at the time) to buy the Lucknow IPL franchise in 2021. He bought the Durban franchise in the SA20 the following year, and previously owned Rising Pune Supergiant. RPSG were involved in the 2016 and 2017 IPL seasons, while Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended.

Lancashire will hold a members' forum next Wednesday. "Key items on the agenda will include details of our partnership with the RPSG Group, the projected financial outcome for Lancashire Cricket and the potential use of the funds generated," the club said. "The investment remains subject to a satisfactory conclusion of the final due diligence and legal processes and a further announcement will be made in due course."

The deal makes RPSG Group the second IPL owners to buy a stake in a Hundred team, after Reliance. Sun Group, the owners of Sunrisers Hyderabad, are understood to be interested in both Northern Superchargers and Trent Rockets, while GMR Group, the co-owners of Delhi Capitals, are widely expected to secure a stake in Southern Brave, having bought host county Hampshire outright last year.

The sales processes for the Superchargers and Rockets were initially scheduled for Monday but are understood to have been delayed slightly, with some losing bidders from previous sales considering entering the running for another team. The sale of a stake in the Brave will round out the process.
