Pogba missing Milan game amid Madrid interest

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 03 August 2019 09:30

CARDIFF, Wales -- Paul Pogba will not feature for Manchester United against AC Milan on Saturday amid renewed interest from Real Madrid.

Pogba was named in the squad for United's final friendly of the summer on Friday but did not make the trip to Cardiff.

- When does the transfer window close?
- All major completed transfer deals

The club put the midfielder's absence down to a back spasm -- the same issue that prevented him from starting against Kristiansund on Tuesday.

Pogba played the final 30 minutes in Oslo but will not play against AC Milan just eight days before the Premier League opener with Chelsea at Old Trafford on Aug. 11.

Sources have told ESPN FC that the midfielder is keen to join Real Madrid but time is running out with just five days to go before the deadline for Premier League teams to buy players.

Real Madrid can buy players until Sept. 2 but United are unlikely to sanction the sale of one of their best players with no prospect of signing a replacement.

Sources have told ESPN FC that United are yet to receive a bid for Pogba.

They value the 26-year-old at around £180 million and privately have insisted he is not for sale.

Earlier in the summer, Pogba said publicly he wanted to find a "new challenge" after three years at United.

He moved back to Old Trafford from Juventus for a then world record £89.3m in 2016 and last season finished as the club's top scorer with 16 goals in all competitions.

Keshav Maharaj returns for second Yorkshire spell

Published in Cricket
Saturday, 03 August 2019 08:05

South Africa spinner Keshav Maharaj will return for Yorkshire's next two Championship matches, as well as a spell in the Vitality Blast, having enjoyed success during his initial three-match spell in July.

Maharaj will be available to play against Nottinghamshire at Scarborough later this month, and for the trip to Taunton beginning on September 10. He is set to make his Blast debut in the Roses match at Old Trafford next Friday, and could feature in seven fixtures; Yorkshire have been without the services of an overseas player since Nicholas Pooran completed a three-game spell last week.

The slow left-armer claimed 20 Championship wickets at 19.95 in his first stint with the club, as well as adding a couple of fifties with the bat. Confirmation of his return comes after Adil Rashid was ruled out for an unknown period by his ongoing shoulder problem.

"When I first arrived, I felt very welcomed by all the club officials and my fellow team-mates," Maharaj said. "I managed to settle in really well on the cricketing front and I'm just glad that the opportunity has been afforded to me to be able to come back for the two four-day games and maybe a few T20s as well.

"I've always wanted to play T20 cricket around the world, as regularly as I can and as often as I can. It's my first T20 gig outside of South Africa so I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully, I can have an impact and that the team can get through to finals day.

"I would love to make this a regular feature with Yorkshire cricket. Being a pro cricketer, I'd love to ply my trade all over the world. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Yorkshire so it will be a pleasure to come back as much as possible.

"I was really pleased to be able to contribute in two victories out of three; I would have loved to made it a third. Hopefully over the two remaining fixtures I can get another couple of victories and help put the team in a good position to win the Championship."

The spin-bowling department has been an issue for Yorkshire all season, with Somerset's Dom Bess having been signed on loan spells for both Championship and T20 cricket. Bess, who has played four Blast games, is set to return to Somerset before the next round of the Championhip, while legspinner Josh Poysden was recently ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a fractured skull in training.

Yorkshire's first-team coach Andrew Gale said of Maharaj: "He made a great impact in the three weeks he was with us. He's a classy spin bowler and he contributed greatly to our wins over Surrey and Somerset.

"He fitted in well with the dressing room and also contributed well with the bat down the order. We look forward to having him back with us next week and we hope he can continue to perform well for us at North Marine Road and Taunton too."

India elect to bowl, Navdeep Saini handed debut

Toss India chose to bowl v West Indies

Virat Kohli elected to bowl in the first T20I against West Indies, saying he expected the pitch - under covers for the best part in the lead-up to the game - to get flatter as it was exposed to the sun during the morning. West Indies captain Carlos Brathwaite said he would also have bowled first for the same reason, adding that the predicted rain in the afternoon was one of his considerations too.

West Indies left out Jason Mohammed, Kharry Pierre and Anthony Bramble from their squad to put out an XI with just the one spinner in Sunil Narine. They picked a potential top four of only left-handers, with Kieron Pollard, Rovman Powell and Carlos Brathwaite making up the middle order.

India handed a debut to fast bowler Navdeep Saini and named three spinners in the squad - all of them fingerspinners. With the batting, they stuck with their famed limited-overs top three, leaving KL Rahul out and picking Manish Pandey ahead of Shreyas Iyer.

India: 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 Rishabh Pant (wk), 5 Manish Pandey, 6 Krunal Pandya, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 10 Khaleel Ahmed, 11 Navdeep Saini

West Indies: 1 John Campbell, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Nicholas Pooran (wk), 4 Shimron Hetmyer, 5 Kieron Pollard, 6 Rovman Powell, 7 Carlos Brathwaite (capt), 8 Sunil Narine, 9 Keemo Paul, 10 Sheldon Cottrell, 11 Oshane Thomas

Green, Warriors reach four-year max extension

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 03 August 2019 09:23

With free agency looming next summer, three-time NBA champion and All-Star forward Draymond Green has agreed to a four-year, $100 million maximum contract extension with the Golden State Warriors, agent Rich Paul of Klutch Sports told ESPN.

The new deal, which starts with the 2020-21 season, brings the total length and value of Green's contract to five years, $118 million. Green's extension will pay him $22.2 million, $24 million, $25.8 million and $27.6 million over the course of the deal.

Green, 29, could have entered the final year of his contract in 2019-20 -- worth $18.5 million -- but both the organization and Green have long insisted that they imagined a long-term future playing alongside teammates Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Green has been one of the vital cogs of the Warriors' run to five straight NBA Finals, with the 35th pick in the 2012 draft elevating himself into an All-Star and helping the franchise become a modern dynasty.

He has been on the NBA's All-Defensive first or second team for five straight seasons and was the Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.

Golden State now has four All-Star players -- Green, Curry, Thompson and D'Angelo Russell -- under contract for the next several years as the franchise moves into the Chase Center in San Francisco. The Warriors signed Thompson to a five-year, $190 million max deal this summer and acquired Russell in a sign-and-trade for Kevin Durant on a four-year, $117 million contract.

The Warriors will have $129 million and $138 million committed to those four players in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, respectively.

Green has averaged 12.5 points, 9.3 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.5 blocks in 123 career playoff games with the Warriors. In 22 playoff games last season, Green averaged 13.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 8.5 assists.

Silver medal but Olajide Omotayo states case

Published in Table Tennis
Saturday, 03 August 2019 05:42

In the opening match in the final of the men’s competition, currently based in Italy but in Lagos representing the Nigerian club, Soj, Olajide Omotayo accounted for Omar Assar (11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-5), a win that is most certainly a confidence booster for the ensuing ITTF Africa Cup.

“I had played against Omar Assar before in Morocco and I realised that we had the same style of play; so I was determined to give my best against him in the encounter. I think the win has boosted my confidence going into the Africa Cup. My target is to make it to the quarter-final because that is the stage the tournament will become tougher. I am ready to take down any of my opponents.” Olajide Omotayo

Success for Olajide Omotayo, who last September was a semi-finalist at the ITTF African Championships in Mauritius and in Lagos is the no.6 seed; but that was to be his team’s only success. Quadri Aruna steadied the ship by beating by Jide Ogidiolu (11-8, 11-6, 11-4) and Olajide Omotayo (11-2, 13-11, 8-11, 14-12); sandwiched in between Ahmed Ali Saleh overcame Azeez Jamiu (11-8, 11-3, 11-7).

Earlier, both teams had reached the final without surrendering a single individual match. First place in the initial stage group, at the semi-final stage with Ahmed Nadim selected in favour of Ahmed Ali Saleh, ENPPI beat Rwanda’s Vision Club trio of Aime Bushema, François Ishimwe and Elie Kayitare. Likewise, with no changes to the line-up, Soj accounted for colleagues Taiwo Mati, Azeez Solanke and Jamiu Ayanwale on duty for Remo Stars.

Problems for Omar Assar, there were also difficulties for colleague Dina Meshref, on duty in the women’s team event for Al Ahly. However, she survived. In the final against Nigeria’s Cannan Queen, she was extended the full five games by Offiong Edem (11-6, 12-14, 7-11, 11-5, 11-8), a win that set her team en route to a 3-0 success. Elizabeta Samara beat Cecilia Akpan (11-6, 11-7, 11-3), before Yousra Helmy overcame Ganiyat Aruna (11-8, 11-6, 11-4) to end matters.

Similar to the men’s team event, both outfits had topped their respective groups advancing to the final without blemish. In the penultimate round, with Marian Alhodaby preferred to Yousra Helmy, Al Ahly overcame Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank trio formed by Marti Gulti, Fiker Geday and Meron Mekuria; no changes to the selection, Cannan Queen had beaten G20 club compatriots Ajoke Ojomu, Fatimo Bello and Esther Oribamese.

Convincing performances, the most prominent African names underlining their high quality; a fact that was acknowledged by most significant dignitaries as they looked forward to the ITTF-Africa Cup. Ishaku Tikon, President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation was in a buoyant mood as was Wahid Oshodi, Chair, Local Organising Committee in addition to Kweku Tandoh, Executive Chair, Lagos State Sports Commission and Khaled El-Salhy, President of the African Table Tennis Federation.

“We will continue to raise the bar as regards table tennis in the country and Africa.” Ishaku Tikon

“We’re hoping to give huge entertainment, I want people to come over to the stadium and enjoy the games,” Wahid Oshodi

“The benefit of hosting this event is to grow tourism in Lagos State, the aim of the state is to emerge as the hub for tourism, entertainment and sport in Africa, ultimately putting Lagos on the world map.” Kweku Tandoh

“We want to show that we have world class players in Africa, like Quadri Aruna and Omar Assar at the next ITTF World Cup. Lagos is like home of table tennis in Africa.” Khaled El-Salhy

Winners of the men’s singles and women’s singles events qualify for the respective World Cup tournaments to be held later this year in the Chinese city of Chengdu.

Welshman Joel Makin has risen above Egypt’s Omar Mosaad to sit at No.12 in August PSA Men’s World Rankings.

The Birmingham-based Makin, 24, rising star of the Robert Owen Academy, advances one spot and swaps places with Mosaad in the only move in an otherwise unchanged top 20. Makin returns to his highest career ranking, first achieved in May this year. He is ahead of fellow Brits Declan James, James Willstrop and Daryl Selby, who are ranked at 17, 18 and 19.

The rankings are once again led by Egypt’s world champion Ali Farag, who makes it six months at No.1. Mohamed ElShorbagy (No.2), Tarek Momen (No.3), Karim Abdel Gawad (No.4) and Germany’s Simon Rösner round out the top five.

New Zealand’s Paul Coll stays at No.6 ahead of Egypt’s Mohamed Abouelghar (No.7), Peru’s PanAm Games Gold Medal winner Diego Elias (No.8), Colombia’s Miguel Rodriguez (No.9) and India’s Saurav Ghosal.

Marwan ElShorbagy retains the No.11 spot ahead of Makin and Mosaad, with Egyptian duo Zahed Salem and Fares Dessouky completing the top 15.

France’s Gregoire Marche, English trio James, Willstrop and Selby, and Australia’s Ryan Cuskelly take the final spots inside the top 20.

The biggest riser on the men’s tour was Australia’s Ethan Eyles – the son of former World Champion Rodney – who moves up 94 places to World No.298 after appearing at the Australian Open and Tasmanian Open on home soil.

Spain’s Ivan Perez was also a significant mover, rising 84 places to World No.349.

Rahmer Declared Winner Of Billy Kimmel Memorial

Published in Racing
Saturday, 03 August 2019 04:00

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – Freddie Rahmer was declared the winner of the Billy Kimmel Memorial for 410 sprint cars at Williams Grove Speedway on Friday night, taking $3,800 for his fourth oval win of the season.

The 25-lap event was marred by a crash late in the race that killed a spectator in the infield.

Alan Krimes and Chad Trout won the heat races and shared the front row for the main event. Trout grabbed the lead at the drop of the green but Krimes shot by him off of turn two, taking over the top spot.

Rahmer then moved into second and Cory Haas into third.

The yellow flag waved with four laps completed for track point leader Danny Dietrich as his car was sitting the wrong direction against the third turn fence with a flat left rear tire and other damage.

Dietrich was towed to the pits and he was done for the night.

Rahmer ducked inside of Krimes in turn one on the restart but Krimes’ momentum off of the cushion kept him out front and then Haas challenged Rahmer for second in the third corner but to no avail.

The yellow flag again unfurled with seven laps completed.

Krimes again controlled the restart and pulled away from Rahmer, Haas and Kyle Moody as they blasted around the cushion.

In traffic, Krimes had to duck off of the cushion to miss the slower car of Barry Shearer entering turn three and Rahmer was then able to close at the halfway point.

Krimes then again had to go low to lap a car in turns three and four as did Rahmer while still keeping pace with the leader with eight laps to go.

Rahmer tried the low side in turns three and four on lap 18 and apparently liked what he found in the low groove because at the other end of the track on lap 19 he ducked low on Krimes entering turn one and slid in front of him to take the lead.

Once in front, Rahmer quickly pulled away to a comfortable advantage and was firmly in control when a two-car tangle on the frontstretch between Anthony Macri and Robbie Kendall as they raced for position inside the top 10 brought out the red flag.

Due to the severity of the accident, which resulted in the death of a spectator, the race was called official with 23 laps complete and Rahmer was declared the winner over Krimes, Haas, Brian Montieth and Moody.

The 25-lap 358 sprint feature was postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

The finish:

1. Freddie Rahmer, 2. Alan Krimes, 3. Cory Haas, 4. Brian Montieth, 5. Kyle Moody, 6. Chad Trout, 7. Rodney Westhafer, 8. Jeff Halligan, 9. Kody Lehman, 10. T.J. Stutts, 11. Robbie Kendall, 12. Anthony Macri, 13. Rick Lafferty, 14. Kyle Abrahims, 15. Barry Shearer, 16. Jordan Givler, 17. Troy Fraker, 18. Danny Dietrich, 19. Adrian Shaffer, 20. Chris Arnold

Zeb Wise Does It Again In Pennsylvania

Published in Racing
Saturday, 03 August 2019 04:00

JONESTOWN, Pa. — Zeb Wise won his second USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Championship feature in three nights Friday at Linda’s Speedway.

The 16-year-old Indiana driver made a late pass of teammate Tyler Courtney to land his Clauson-Marshall Racing ride in victory lane.

“Pennsylvania’s been really nice to me,” Wise exclaimed. “Tonight was a really good night. We qualified a little badly and weren’t sure where we were going to end up. These little bullrings are kind of my forte and we got it done.”

Wise had his work cut out for him, lining up eighth on the grid for the 30-lap main event. Early on, however, Tanner Thorson appeared to be the class of the field, racing from the outside of the front row to gain a half-straightaway lead by lap five over leading series Rookie contender and Pennsylvania native Andrew Layser, who started fourth.

On the eighth lap, pole sitter Kevin Thomas Jr. reemerged into contention, exchanging sliders on both ends of the racetrack with Layser for the runner-up spot until Layser slid sideways to a stop between the middle of turns three and four to bring out the first yellow of the night.

When racing resumed, Thomas was on the hunt to run down Thorson as he sought his first series win since a last-lap Kokomo Grand Prix triumph in April. Thomas made gains through the middle to pull side-by-side with Thorson for the race lead nearing the midway point.

As the pair came off turn four wheel-to-wheel and headed for the crossed flags signaling the midway point, Thorson’s right rear tire went flat before coming to a halt in turn one. Thorson ran three more laps before pulling in, taking an 18th place result.

Thorson’s misfortune was to the benefit of Thomas who now occupied the lead as well as series point leader Tyler Courtney who now slotted into second. From the get-go at the start of the second half of the event, Thomas took the high road as Courtney clamped down on the bottom.

Both remained even throughout the corners on both ends of the quarter-mile dirt oval, but Thomas had enough momentum in his back pocket to blitz by Courtney to lead by a half car length at the stripe on laps 17 and 18.

The two stuck to their guns on the following laps, but Courtney was able to get a better pull off the exit of turn two to charge into turns three and four with just enough gusto to nip Courtney at the line.  The song remained the same on laps 21 and 22 as the two battled side by side on each entire lap with Courtney slowly able to gain bits and pieces of ground to distance himself from Thomas, finally grabbing some semblance of breathing room on lap 24 by three car lengths.

Just further back, third-running Wise was playing the role of a keen observer, watching his competition, then adjusting his plan of attack to see how it would play out in the ensuing laps.

“For the longest time, I was just up ripping the top,” Wise recalled. “On that last restart, Sunshine started working the bottom under KT and I saw it working. I figured it was just going to get better and better as the top went away. So, I dropped down there and felt it out for a few laps.”

With a mere five laps remaining, Wise, who had been running third since the halfway mark, began a sudden surge on the bottom, first by the rim-riding Thomas on the 26th lap, then had CMR teammate and race leader Courtney next in the pecking order.

Two laps were left on the board and Wise was closing on Courtney. Entering turn three, the two encountered the lapped car of Bruce Buckwalter Jr. on the bottom. Courtney took a quick scan and opted to go to the top to maneuver around the outside while Wise followed Buckwalter down low and crossed under the white flag a car length ahead of Courtney.

With a slower car firmly planted on the path he intended to pursue, Wise still knew he needed a little luck to fall his way despite carrying the lead into the first turn.

“Once I got by KT and as the laps wound down, we got to a few more lapped cars,” Wise remembered. “When Sunshine made the decision to go to the top on the last lap, I decided to stick the bottom and pray that the lapped car would miss the bottom just a little bit. He did. Into one, he missed it just a little bit, so I shoved my nose in there.”

For Wise, it worked out to perfection as he pulled out to a four-car length lead entering the bottom of turn three.  Second-running Courtney re-entered the bottom line, but this time, he was staring at the back of Wise who sprinted off the final corner to win by 0.537 seconds.

Courtney, who earlier set quick time and won his heat, just barely missed his opportunity at picking up the night’s sweep. He finished in the runner-up position for the second time during Pennsylvania Midget Week ahead of Thomas, Chris Windom and Jason McDougal, who rounded out the top five.

Spectator Killed At Williams Grove Speedway

Published in Racing
Saturday, 03 August 2019 04:01

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – A spectator was killed on Friday night at Williams Grove Speedway when a sprint car flipped into the infield.

Anthony Macri and Robbie Kendall were racing for position late in the 410 sprint car feature when the two collided on the frontstretch.

According to reports, the resulting incident sent Kendall’s car flipping over the infield fence, where it struck 67-year-old Richard Speck, who was sitting in the back of his pickup truck along the fence line.

The remainder of the racing card was immediately canceled for the evening and Freddie Rahmer was declared the winner of the 410 sprint car feature as law enforcement and medical personnel were called to the scene.

Speck was pronounced dead at the scene according to the Cumberland County Coroner.
