Sources: Lore, A-Rod have cash ready for Wolves
Minority owners Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez have $940 million in a bank account ready to wire immediately to majority owner Glen Taylor and the NBA for outright control of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the WNBA's Lynx should they receive approval, sources told ESPN on Tuesday.
Taylor has said he no longer wants to sell the team.
Lore and Rodriguez have an arbitration hearing with Taylor set for Nov. 4 and then would need to be approved by the NBA board of governors before being able to gain full ownership of the franchises. All team sales require the approval of at least 23 of the owners.
Lore and Rodriguez agreed more than three years ago to buy the Timberwolves for $1.5 billion from Taylor, who halted the sale March 28 because he said they missed the deadline to make the final payment.
Lore and Rodriguez have said they had the cash to complete the deal but were delayed by the NBA in its approval of the transaction and were thus entitled to an extension. After mediation failed to resolve the conflict, the two sides are headed for an arbitration hearing in keeping with the terms of the contract.
Having already made payments to buy 40% of the team in 2022 and 2023, the $940 million represents the rest of the total amount for Lore and Rodriguez to gain 100% ownership of the Wolves and Lynx.
Billionaire businessman and former three-term New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg reached an agreement to join the Lore-Rodriguez group over the summer, sources said.
LeBron: Don't have to rush pairing with Bronny
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- When Los Angeles Lakers coach JJ Redick first puts LeBron and Bronny James on the court in a game at the same time -- whether it's opening night against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday or later this season -- NBA history will be made.
For LeBron, who is embarking on his 22nd season while his son starts his first, the time and place of that first shift together is inconsequential.
"Whenever it happens, it will happen," he said after Lakers shootaround Tuesday morning. "If it's tonight or if it's down the line, whenever it happens, it will happen. But it's been a treat, and just in preseason, the practices, just every day ... just bringing him up to speed of what this professional life is all about and how to prepare every day as a professional."
The history the 39-year-old LeBron spent time reflecting on hours before the 2024-25 season tipped off was everything Bronny, 20, went through to get to this point. About a year before the Lakers selected Bronny with the No. 55 pick in the second round, he suffered a cardiac arrest in July 2023 during a summer workout while preparing for his freshman season at USC.
"[It was] not too long ago that the scare happened," LeBron said. "And when he's able to grace an NBA floor, if that's tonight or whenever the case may be, it'll be another one of those moments just to know the adversity that he went through.
"I've had a couple of family members that have had heart surgeries. Some of them older, some of them younger. And to know how long it kind of takes to get back to yourself, to see him be able to play in a college Division I game the same year that he had heart surgery was, like, a 'wow' moment. And I knew that at that moment that there really was going to be nothing to stop him from getting to this -- to anything that he wants to do. And he wanted to continue to play basketball."
Continuing in the sport was the younger James' top priority.
"One of the first things that he asked, he asked the doctors after his heart surgery, like, 'When can I play again?'" LeBron recalled. "Not like, 'How long is it going to take for my heart to heal?' Or not, 'How long was I in surgery?' None of those. He asked, 'When can I play again?'"
LeBron and Bronny played together once during the preseason, on Oct. 6 at the start of the second quarter against the Phoenix Suns. Bronny struggled for most of the exhibition slate but finished on a high note, scoring 17 points on 7-for-17 shooting with 4 rebounds and 3 steals against the Golden State Warriors.
Whether the father-son duo gets on the court together Tuesday or not, there will be a distinguished father-son pair in the crowd to watch the game. Ken Griffey Jr. said on "The Road to Cooperstown" podcast on SiriusXM that he will be attending the Lakers' season opener with his dad, Ken Griffey Sr.
The Griffeys became the first father-son teammates in Major League Baseball history with the Seattle Mariners in 1990.
"I've been a big-time fan of Ken Griffey Jr. and then became a friend of Ken Griffey Jr. throughout my professional career," LeBron said. "Just understanding the history of sports to be able to see what they were able to do. ... So to be here today and to know that those guys will be in attendance tonight while me and Bronny are on the same team is a pretty cool moment in history of sports."
The Griffeys famously hit back-to-back home runs for the Mariners on Sept. 14, 1990. LeBron was asked what the basketball version of that moment for him and Bronny to achieve.
"Probably two lobs," LeBron said. "I catch a lob and then Bronny catches a lob, that probably be the equivalent of that. Obviously the long ball is something that's big time in baseball, so probably two lobs."
World of risk? Hurt Cortes eyes Yanks roster spot
NEW YORK -- Nestor Cortes knows there's a long-term injury risk if he pitches in the World Series just one month after being diagnosed with a flexor strain, often a precursor to a serious elbow injury. Pitching could cost Cortes, a free agent after next season, millions of dollars.
But he expects to be on the New York Yankees' World Series roster for Game 1 on Friday against the Los Angeles Dodgers. It's a risk -- after conversations with team officials, trainers, his agents and his family -- that he's willing to take.
"We have weighed in the consequences this can lead up to," Cortes said, "but if I have a ring and then a year off of baseball, then so be it."
The odds were against Cortes pitching again in 2024 when he was placed on the injured list less than a month ago. It would've taken the Yankees reaching the World Series to give him enough time. Even then, though, chances were low.
But the 29-year-old Cortes was determined. So, after not throwing for 10 days and receiving a PRP injection, he began ramping up. He threw from 60 feet then 90 feet then 120 feet. Then, finally, off the mound. On Tuesday, he threw a 28-pitch live bullpen session at Yankee Stadium against a group of hitters that included Oswaldo Cabrera and Austin Wells. Afterward, he said he expects to be on the Yankees' World Series roster as long as he wakes up Wednesday without any unusual soreness.
"It's as good as it could be," Cortes said. "I think when the adrenaline kicks in and given the fact that we're on the biggest stage of baseball, I think I'll be able to do it. I think given how versatile I am and different roles I've been in throughout my career, I'm going to be up for the task and ready to go."
Yankees manager Aaron Boone on Monday said there was a "good chance" Cortes would be on the roster. On Tuesday, he said the Yankees are considering carrying 13 pitchers and 13 position players for the World Series after having 12 pitchers available for the AL Championship Series. Cortes would presumably replace a position player if they decide on 13 pitchers. He would replace another pitcher if they go with 14 position players again.
Cortes hasn't pitched since Sept. 18. Seven days later, he was scratched from a scheduled start and placed on the injured list, ending his regular season. A starter for nearly the entire season -- 30 of his 31 appearances were starts -- he would pitch out of the Yankees' bullpen in the World Series ready to throw "20 to 30 pitches." Pitching back-to-back days is unlikely, though he said it could happen if the first day's workload is light.
The Yankees carried two left-handed relievers -- Tim Hill and Tim Mayza -- for their first two playoff series. Hill has appeared in seven of the Yankees' nine postseason games, including all five ALCS games, and has allowed one earned run across 5 innings. Mayza has logged 1 innings in two outings in the playoffs.
The trio -- should Cortes land on the roster -- would be tasked with quieting a potent group of left-handed hitters that includes Freddie Freeman, Max Muncy, and Shohei Ohtani, the presumptive NL MVP.
"I'm going to have to bring out the kitchen sink on him," Cortes said of Ohtani. "And not only him, but all the other lefties that they have in that lineup."
Grand Slam winner Thiem's career ends in Vienna defeat
Dominic Thiem's tennis career came to an end as he lost to Luciano Darderi in the first round of the Vienna Open.
Former world number three Thiem, who won the Vienna title in 2019, was beaten 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 by Italian Darderi.
Austria's former US Open champion announced last week that he would retire after his home tournament.
Following his defeat to world number 42 Darderi, the crowd held up cards displaying the Austrian flag and the message 'Danke Dominic' ('Thank you Dominic').
Thiem, 31, gave an on-court speech before placing his racquet in a glass case, to be auctioned to raise funds for charity.
A ceremony was also held in Vienna on Sunday, including Thiem playing an exhibition set against Alexander Zverev, the player he beat to win the 2020 US Open.
Thiem won 17 titles at ATP Tour level during his career. He was a French Open finalist in 2018 and 2019 and runner-up at the Australian Open in 2020.
He also claimed important wins over all of the 'Big Three' - Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.
However, less than a year after his New York triumph, Thiem suffered a wrist injury that kept him off the tour for 10 months and resulted in his ranking plummeting to outside the top 350.
Thiem returned to the top 100 last year but has been unable to find his best game and confirmed in May that this season would be his last.

2024-25 opening night: Experts' picks for East, West and NBA champs
The 2024-25 NBA season is officially here!
The Boston Celtics begin their quest for back-to-back titles against the New York Knicks to kick off the NBA season (7:30 p.m. ET). After a dominant run through the playoffs, the Celtics enter this season as the favorites, but the depth of competition in the league won't make it easy for Boston to repeat.
The Knicks' busy offseason, which included bringing in Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, has title hopes high in New York, while the Philadelphia 76ers signed Paul George this offseason to maximize the prime of 2022-23 MVP Joel Embiid. Will either contender have enough star power to dethrone the Celtics in the Eastern Conference race?
In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder will try to build off of a memorable 2023-24 campaign during which they became the youngest No. 1 seed in NBA history. And OKC didn't stand pat, adding key players in Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein to bolster one of the deepest rosters in the league. The Minnesota Timberwolves, who face the Los Angeles Lakers on opening night (10 p.m. ET), also are among teams with eyes on the Larry O'Brien Trophy after Anthony Edwards took a giant leap last season. And despite the talent at the top of the conference, the Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets could all make noise in the crowded West race.
Will it be Oklahoma City-Boston in the Finals? Which other teams could crash the party? And which are most likely to be involved in trades? Our NBA experts make their picks.

Murray now hopes to win a first Test cap as Wales begin against Fiji on Sunday, 10 November at Principality Stadium, before playing Australia (17 November) and South Africa (23 November) in Cardiff.
Whether his parents will fly over for those games remains to be seen.
"I'm not sure, they really want to," said Murray.
"Unfortunately they've already booked flights for a couple of weeks later for when we play Glasgow on 29 November.
"They were planning on watching one of my Scarlets games but whether or not they can come a bit earlier or not we'll see, but hopefully."
Murray was able to celebrate with his Scarlets team-mate and house-mate Taine Plumtree with the back rower also named in the squad.
"He's stoked as well," said Murray.
"You have to be when you get the opportunity to play international rugby. We went out for dinner as a little celebratory dinner and we're both chuffed."
One thing Murray will have to do if he gets his chance is become familiar with the words of the Welsh national anthem.
"I haven't learned that yet, but I'm sure I'll be practicing in the shower or something!" said Murray.
"I'll definitely have to get on to that."

Washington Capitals at Philadelphia Flyers
6 p.m., Wells Fargo Center
Flyers (-1.5, +200), -120 money line
Capitals (+1.5, -275), Even money line
Total 5.5: (Over -130, Under +110)
Capitals-Flyers Over 5.5 (-125): These lines could shift -- or even reverse the favorite-underdog -- as game time approaches on Tuesday, but the over/under stands out as a strong addition to a parlay. Flyers games this season have averaged 6.6 total goals, while Capitals games have averaged 7.5. With the total opening at 5.5, the over looks as appealing as a cheesesteak.
Minnesota Wild at Florida Panthers
6:30 p.m., Amerant Bank Arena
Panthers (-1.5, +170), -145 money line
Wild (+1.5, -215), +125 money line
Total 5.5: (Over -125, Under +105)
Wild +1.5 (-215): Three of the five games with Minnesota have been one-goal affairs. All three of those games have featured a road underdog beating the spread (though, admittedly, it's only been the Wild to actually be the dog twice). But Filip Gustavsson is at the top of his game and Sergei Bobrovsky is always reliable, so let's side with the Wild at least keeping it close.
Tampa Bay Lightning at New Jersey Devils
6:45 p.m., Prudential Center
Devils (-1.5, +150), -165 money line
Lightning (+1.5, -180), +140 money line
Total 6.5: (Over -120, Under Even)
Stefan Noesen Over 0.5 power play points (+375): The Lightning have coughed up 0.5 power-play points per game to members of the opposing top unit this season. Noesen happens to be a member of the Devils No. 1 advantage at the moment, sharing the ice with Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt and Dougie Hamilton. It's a good position to be in.
Dallas Stars at Buffalo Sabres
7 p.m., KeyBank Center
Stars (-1.5, +160), -155 money line
Sabres (+1.5, -190), +135 money line
Total 5.5: (Over -130, Under +110)
Tage Thompson Over 0.5 power play points (+375): This one defies all the logical suggestions, but sometimes you need to go contrarian. The Sabres have managed to go seven full games without a single power-play point. The Stars have the best penalty kill in the league, with members of opposing top units averaging 0.08 power-play points against them this season. It makes no sense to back Thompson -- which is why I like this one. Why wouldn't the dam burst in the most unlikely of scenarios? If you want logic here, Esa Lindell averages 3.17 blocked shots per game and the Sabres allow opposing defenders to average 16.8 blocked shots per game (third most).
New York Rangers at Montreal Canadiens
7:15 p.m., Bell Centre
Rangers (-1.5, +115), -215 money line
Canadiens (+1.5, -135), +180 money line
Total 6.5: (Over +110, Under -130)
Rangers -1.5 (+125): The Rangers have already beaten the spread as road favorites twice in this young season. The Canadiens are 2-2 against the spread when they are the home underdog. It's also tempting to back any of Vincent Trocheck, Artemi Panarin or Chris Kreider on going over 3.5 shots, as the Habs have allowed the sixth-most to opposing forwards this season (12.0 per game).
Maple Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz shows tremendous concentration to keep the puck out of the net just before it crosses the line.
Toronto Maple Leafs at Columbus Blue Jackets
7:30 p.m., Nationwide Arena
Maple Leafs (-1.5, +105), -225 money line
Blue Jackets (+1.5, -125), +190 money line
Total 6.5: (Over -120, Under 'even')
Zach Werenski Over 3.5 shots (+110): With the totals in Leafs games only averaging 5.5 goals this season, and knowing they are usually in the driver's seat when dictating game pace, it was tempting to look at the under set at 6.5. But the Blue Jackets have averaged 7.2 total goals in their contests and it's likely goaltender Joseph Woll's season debut for Toronto, so there are other factors at play. Instead, let's ride Werenski and his 4.4 shots on goal per game.
Detroit Red Wings at New York Islanders
7:45 p.m., UBS Arena
Islanders (-1.5, +160), -150 money line
Red Wings (+1.5, -190), +130 money line
Total 6.5: (Over +105, Under -125)
Noah Dobson Over 0.5 power play points (+250): While these teams may be tied for second-last in penalty-killing percentage at 62.5 percent each coming into the game, it's the Red Wings that have allowed twice as many power-play goals against (six versus three). Dobson is coming in averaging 0.4 power-play points per game and the Red Wings have allowed an average of 0.68 to members of the opponents top unit this season.
Winnipeg Jets at St. Louis Blues
8 p.m., Enterprise Center
Jets (-1.5, +165), -150 money line
Blues (+1.5, -200), +130 money line
Total 5.5: (Over -120, Under 'even')
Blues +1.5 Spread (-190): The Blues have been the underdog at home three times this season and have outright won two of those games, which happen to be their last two contests. I'd feel even better about it if the red-hot Joel Hofer gets to start in the crease again, but with a chance we'll see Jordan Binnington, I'll also offer up taking the under on Colton Parayko for 2.5 blocked shots (-116), as the Jets have only given opposing defenders 9.1 total blocked shots per game total, with the opposing top-four blue-liners averaging just 1.25.
Catch all the Frozen Frenzy action on ESPN and ESPN+ on Tuesday, October 22nd.
Vancouver Canucks at Chicago Blackhawks
8:15 p.m., United Center
Canucks (-1.5, +135), -175 money line
Blackhawks (+1.5, -160), +150 money line
Total 6.5: (Over +115, Under -135)
Teuvo Teravainen Over 0.5 power play points (+275): Connor Bedard's linemate already has five power-play points for the third-best No. 1 unit in the league. The Canucks -- who have posted middle-of-the-road numbers on the penalty kill thus far -- are earning an average of 10:48 PIM/game. Which is more than the median.
Colorado Avalanche at Seattle Kraken
8:30 p.m., Climate Pledge Arena
Avalanche (-1.5, +185), -120 money line
Kraken (+1.5, -250), 'even' money line
Total 6.5: (Over -105, Under -115)
Ross Colton Over 0.5 goals (+240) It's difficult to shy away from a player who has six goals in five games, and five in his past three (on 13 shots). One who's skating on a top line and power play with Nathan MacKinnon. Against projected starter Philipp Grubauer, who surrendered four to the visiting Flyers in his last start for the Kraken.
Boston Bruins at Nashville Predators
8:45 p.m., Bridgestone Arena
Predators (-1.5, +180), -130 money line
Bruins (+1.5, -235), +110 money line
Total 5.5: (Over -135, Under +115)
Brandon Carlo Over 2.5 blocked shots (+132): First of all, Carlo leads his club with 19 though six games (3.17/contest). Plus, the 0-5 Predators are expected to come out firing after having approximately 75 hours off to stew over Saturday's matinee loss to Detroit. The top-four defender should have ample opportunity to block a few of them.
Carolina Hurricanes at Edmonton Oilers
9 p.m., Rogers Place
Oilers (-1.5, +170), -135 money line
Hurricanes (+1.5, -215), +115 money line
Total 6.5: (Over +105, Under -125)
Shayne Gostisbehere Over 0.5 power-play points (+375): The Oilers are allowing 0.79 power-play points/game to opposing top units. Gostisbehere -- who happens to skate on Carolina's No. 1 assembly with the man-advantage -- has two goals with the extra skater in his past two games. For the number, this might be one of the most appealing plays on Tuesday's entire slate.
Check out some of the top performers in fantasy NHL from Monday, including William Nylander, Auston Matthews and Chris Tanev.
Ottawa Senators at Utah Hockey Club
9:15 p.m., Delta Center
Utah HC (-1.5, +190), -120 money line
Senators (+1.5, -265), 'even' money line
Total 6.5: (Over -110, Under -110)
Senators-Utah Over 6.5 (-110): Ottawa and Utah rank seventh and 16th in allowing 3.80 and 3.33 goals/game, respectively. Both sides are also scoring themselves, averaging 3.67 (Utah) and 3.60 (Ottawa) per contest. With respect to that arithmetic, this tilt sets up to be a lively scoring affair. Also know that Barrett Hayton (Over points 0.5 +110) has failed to register a single point only twice this season.
Pittsburgh Penguins at Calgary Flames
9:30 p.m., Scotiabank Saddledome
Flames (-1.5, +200), -110 money line
Penguins (+1.5, -275), -110 money line
Total 6.5: (Over -110, Under -110)
Jonathan Huberdeau Over 0.5 power play points (+235): Three of Huberdeau's six points on the season have counted with the extra skater and the Penguins' penalty kill ranks 20th in the league. If interested in even longer odds, there's some draw to Drew O'Connor Over 0.5 goals (+400). According to Natural Stat Trick, Sidney Crosby's current linemate ranks top of the league in high danger scoring chances with 14. I also like MacKenzie Weegar Over 2.5 blocked shots.
San Jose Sharks at Anaheim Ducks
10:15 p.m., Honda Center
Ducks (-1.5, +140), -185 money line
Sharks (+1.5, -165), +155 money line
Total 5.5: (Over -125, Under +105)
Sharks-Ducks Under 5.5 (-125): While the Macklin Celebrini-less Sharks are averaging 1.60 goals/game, the Ducks are pacing out at 2.40 thus far this season. Plus Anaheim starter Lukas Dostal shut out San Jose for the 2-0 victory at their last meeting, only 10 days ago.
Los Angeles Kings at Vegas Golden Knights
11 p.m., T-Mobile Arena
Golden Knights (-1.5, +170), -145 money line
Kings (+1.5, -215), +125 money line
Total 5.5: (Over -125, Under +105)
Anze Kopitar Over 0.5 assists (+115): After erupting for a hat-trick opening night, Kopitar has since shifted into (his more usual) set-up mode, providing five assists in his past four games. While these two teams haven't met since late December, the Kings captain has 22 helpers to show for his 32 career games against Vegas.
Christian Pulisic continued his sensational start to the season on Tuesday, scoring directly from a corner in AC Milan's UEFA Champions League match against Belgium's Club Brugge.
The United States star opened the scoring in the 34th minute at the San Siro, sending in an inswinging corner from the left that deceived the goalkeeper and defenders and somehow missed everyone before bouncing into the net beyond the despairing attempted clearance on the goal line.
The effort was the first "Olimpico" goal of Pulisic's career and took him to 10 goal contributions in his last 10 games for club and country. It was also the 26-year-old's second goal in three Champions League games this season, after scoring in Milan's opening defeat to Liverpool last month.
In Serie A, Pulisic has scored five goals and added three assists in eight game this campaign. He also registered an assist in Mauricio Pochettino's first game in charge of the USMNT, against Panama earlier this month.
Just six minutes after Pulisic's goal, Brugge were reduced to 10 men when Raphael Onyedika was shown a straight red card.
Mitchell: 'We can't change the wicket, but we'll find a way to adapt'
"One thing we can't do is we can't change the surface," Mitchell said two days out of the Pune Test. "So for us, it's reacting to what's coming at us and adapting on the fly. We as Kiwis, that's what we pride ourselves on, we get stuck into the moment, we stay where our feet are and we be as present as possible. We can't change the wicket. What will be, will be. But I'm sure we'll come up with a plan and find a way to take 20 wickets and hopefully score a few runs as well."
"Look, that's the nature of the game that we play, especially Test cricket," he said. "You know, you have little patches where you score a lot of runs and you have patches where I guess you get starts and you want to keep trying to convert. So, look, for me, I just love playing for New Zealand. It means a hell of a lot to pull on that baggy and play Test cricket. And I know that if I keep doing my job for the team, then personal milestones and things like that will take care of themselves."
"Youngie and Rachin have been around our group for a long time even though they haven't played a lot of cricket," Mitchell said. "They've been able to see how the culture works and how we want to go about playing as Black Caps. And they've fitted seamlessly into their roles.
"Will O'Rourke, he's a young talent. He's from my domestic team back home, so I've had to face him plenty of times in the nets and it's not much fun. So look, he's a great talent and I'm sure he'll continue to do amazing thing for New Zealand in the future."
"He's a big unit first of all," Mitchell said. "He's tall, he bowls from a height but he also can get the balls to go both ways which is always a challenge especially in Christchurch at Hagley [Oval]. There's a bit of bounce in those wickets, so as you can imagine it can be quite tough at times. "But yeah look, he's first of all a great man as well. He doesn't say a lot but when he does it's pretty funny and yeah, he's good to have around."
