Afghanistan Women's XI to play in Melbourne ahead of Ashes Test
An Afghanistan women's cricket team, consisting of refugees who now live in Australia, will play a game in Melbourne in January, the first time they have been able to come together as a group since leaving their country following the Taliban takeover.
The T20 match between an Afghanistan Women's XI and a Cricket Without Borders XI will take place on January 30 at Junction Oval ahead of the opening day of the floodlit Women's Ashes Test at the MCG.
The players involved fled Afghanistan in 2021 when the Taliban came into power and now live in Canberra and Melbourne. Many play for local cricket clubs but have not been able to form themselves into a representative team.
The Australian government has been involved in helping set up the match.
"Many people across cricket and the community have come together to provide support for members of the Afghanistan women's team since their relocation to Australia and this match will be a celebration of that work," Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said.
"I'm delighted that their ambition to play together will be achieved in this exhibition match which will be a wonderful addition to the many events around the Day/Night Women's Ashes Test."
Earlier this year, 17 of the players who were contracted to the Afghanistan Cricket Board in 2020 prior to the Taliban takeover wrote to the ICC asking for assistance in setting up a refugee team in Australia.
"Our goals in having a refugee team are to develop and showcase our talent, give hope to the women remaining in Afghanistan, and to draw attention to the challenges women of Afghanistan face," the letter said. "Like the Afghanistan men's team, we aim to compete at the highest levels. We want to recruit and train girls and women who love cricket to show the world the talent of Afghan women, and to demonstrate the great victories they can achieve if given a chance through the leadership and financial support of the ICC."
Tyson slaps Paul in face during final staredown
DALLAS -- Mike Tyson said that "the devil himself" would show up on Friday night in his boxing match against Jake Paul. He gave Paul a preview at Thursday's weigh-in.
After Tyson weighed in at 233 pounds, he approached Paul for the final staredown before Friday's clash at AT&T Stadium. Paul, who weighed a career-high 220 pounds, darted forward from a crawling stance to get up close and personal to the former heavyweight champion.
In response to Paul, 27, entering his personal space, Tyson unleashed an open-handed slap that connected flush on Paul's face. The two were quickly separated by security as Paul played to the crowd, mocked Tyson and laughed at his opponent.
A source close to Tyson told ESPN that Tyson reacted to Paul "purposefully" stepping on his foot during the staredown. Tyson was fed up with Paul's trash talk, according to the source, and stepping on his foot was the tipping point for Tyson.
Tyson was escorted away while Paul addressed the crowd, saying, "It's personal now. He must die!"
Tyson's demeanor has shifted over the past several days. He was talkative during Tuesday's open workouts but appeared much more subdued at Wednesday's news conference, offering short answers to questions from the media. By Thursday, he seemed to have had enough of the talking and was ready for action.
How that translates to Friday's bout is anyone's guess, but the slap has only heightened anticipation for the generational clash between the iconic boxer and the YouTuber-turned-prizefighter.

Slovakia shock US to reach BJK Cup Finals last eight
Slovakia reached the last eight of the Billie Jean King Cup Finals with a 2-1 comeback victory over 18-time champions the United States.
Taylor Townsend put the US ahead with a 7-5 6-4 victory over 17-year-old Renata Jamrichova in the first singles match.
But Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova, ranked 43rd, caused an upset when she beat world number 11 Danielle Collins 6-2 7-5 to level the tie and force a doubles decider.
Tereza Mihalikova and Viktoria Hruncakova joined forces to defeat Townsend and Ashlyn Krueger 6-3 3-6 10-8 to set up a quarter-final encounter with Australia, who received a bye in the first round.
Earlier, Japan were the first team to claim a first-round win as they fought back to beat Romania 2-1 and seal their place in the last eight, where they will face 2023 runners-up Italy.
The tournament's opening tie between Spain and Poland was postponed on Wednesday because of a severe weather alert.
It has been moved to Friday, with play starting at 09:00 GMT before Great Britain face Germany from 16:00.
Deschamps: Mbappé struggles part 'psychological'
France coach Didier Deschamps said Thursday that there are both physical and psychological reasons for Kylian Mbappé's rough patch of form.
After France drew 0-0 with Israel in the Nations League to secure a spot in the Nations League quarterfinals, Deschamps was again asked about the reasons behind the Real Madrid striker's absence from his squad.
"It's a fact that he is in a difficult situation," Deschamps told broadcaster TF1. "Obviously, he is going through a period which is not the happiest of his career."
Mbappé was not included in Deschamps' list for the match against Israel and a game in Italy later this this week, with the France manager pleading with journalists to leave his star alone ahead of the Israel game.
Mbappé was also absent from the previous France team because of a minor thigh injury. This time he is not injured.
"He wanted to come," Deschamps said. "I think it's better for him [not to be selected] at the moment. Everybody can go through a difficult period. There is a physical element, and a psychological one."
Mbappé's performances have been below par in recent weeks after he joined Madrid from PSG this summer. He has one goal in his last seven club games and hasn't added to his 48 goals for France since June.
Deschamps last week did not elaborate about his choice to do without Mbappé, but said it was not related to recent reports in Swedish media that the former Paris Saint-Germain star was the subject of a rape investigation in Stockholm. Mbappé's representatives have rejected the reports as "false and irresponsible."
Despite the lacklustre draw, France still secured at least second place in Group A2 having 10 points from five games.
"I can't be satisfied with what we produced. We should have won. We're capable of doing better," Deschamps told reporters after the match.
"We could have done more against an opponent that was very compact and wasted a lot of time. We had the chances to win, but we weren't efficient enough. There was much more energy in the second half, but we still couldn't score."
France will face Italy at the San Siro in Milan on Sunday in the next Nations League clash, with Deschamps unsure of his lineup.
"I don't know. I need to take stock. Honestly, I can't answer that right now. There will definitely be some changes," he said.
"I'll wait until the final training session on Saturday. Playing three days later is never easy, and there's fatigue, which is normal and not an excuse, but the players' bodies are under strain."
The match was played with a record low crowd for Les Bleus at the Stade de France in a match overshadowed by frictions around the Gaza war.
"We were focused and showed a team that was determined to bring results for its country, and we want to thank the security services who protected us," Shimon said.

Williamson returns for England series, Nathan Smith called up
Smith, 26, made his international debut in the first ODI against Sri Lanka earlier this week. In last season's Plunket Shield he was the leading wicket-taker with 33 at 17.18 and in September was awarded a central contract. He also took 27 wickets at 21.14 for Worcestershire in last season's County Championship alongside scoring three half-centuries.
Williamson's return to fitness could put pressure on Will Young, player of the series in India, to retain his place in the XI.
"It's obviously a big series for the side in terms of the World Test Championship and to also now be farewelling someone like Tim Southee, only raises it up further," Sam Wells, the New Zealand selector, said. "Tim has had a fabulous career and will go down as one of the great Black Caps.
"I am sure the team and the public will want to give Tim a fitting send-off in what is a highly anticipated series. It's also an exciting time for Nathan to be brought into the Test squad for the first time. Nathan is an exciting talent with a proven first-class record and I'm sure he will bring a lot of skill and energy to the group."

France tie with Israel amid brief clashes in stands
There was a brief altercation between a small number of fans early into Thursday's Nations League soccer game between France and Israel despite heavy security inside the stadium.
Around 10 minutes after the game kicked off as scheduled at 8:45 p.m. local time, there was scuffle in the top section of the stand behind one of the goals, with some of those involved having Israeli flags draped over their backs. It was not clear what caused the altercation and security intervened after around one minute.
The match finished in a 0-0 draw with no further incidents at Stade de France. However, Israel's national anthem was whistled by some fans when the players lined up and Israel players were jeered at times when they got the ball.
Chants of "Israel, Israel" could he heard from visiting fans for several minutes before the final whistle.
Seeking to prevent a repeat of violence in Amsterdam last week around a Europa League game involving Maccabi Tel Aviv, 4,000 French security personnel were deployed in and around the stadium and on public transport.
Several buses carrying Israel fans arrived under police escort and some were waving flags inside the stadium. Some 100 Israel fans defied a warning from their government against travelling for sports events, sitting in a corner of the 80,000-capacity stadium which was barely a fifth full.
"I didn't see the scuffles. We had to play this game in a context that we would like not to have. It's obviously weird to play in front of such a [small] crowd," France manager Didier Deschamps said after the match.
Leading up to the game, several hundred anti-Israeli demonstrators had gathered at a square in Paris' Saint-Denis district perimeter, waving Palestinian flags, as well as a few Lebanese and Algerian ones, to protest against the match.
French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau said this week there was never any doubt the match would go ahead, following the unrest in Amsterdam which saw both Maccabi fans and local groups engage in violence, according to Dutch police.
He said there were no specific threats identified ahead of the game, but that zero risk did not exist.

Vini Jr. misses pen in Brazil draw with Venezuela
Brazil had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Venezuela after a quick-fire second-half strike by substitute Telasco Segovia canceled out Raphinha's opener for the dominant visitors in the South American World Cup qualifiers on Thursday.
Vinicius Junior missed a chance to win the game with a penalty and missed the subsequent rebound after the keeper parried it back into his path.
The high-paced match saw numerous chances from both sides who registered 11 goal attempts each, with Brazil enjoying over 60% of possession.
Raphinha gave Brazil the lead, netting a fine left-footed strike from a free kick in the 43rd minute. But Segovia stroke an unstoppable first-effort shot from the edge of the box 38 seconds into the second half to level the game.
Venezuela goalkeeper Rafael Romo stopped Vinicius' poorly taken spot kick in the 62nd minute and Venezuela held on against Brazil's late press for a winner, with substitute Alexander Gonzalez sent off for lightly brushing both Gabriel Martinelli and Vinicius in the face in successive plays in the 89th minute.
Five-time World Cup champions Brazil are third in the standings on 17 points, five from leaders Argentina, who play later on Thursday. Venezuela are seventh on 12 points.
The top six sides are guaranteed a berth at the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
