Cavs hold off Sixers, 6th team ever to start 13-0

Published in Basketball
Wednesday, 13 November 2024 19:41

PHILADELPHIA -- Donovan Mitchell scored 11 of his 23 points in the final three minutes of the game and the Cleveland Cavaliers became the sixth team in NBA history to start a season 13-0 with a 114-106 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday night.

Mitchell also grabbed 13 rebounds and had nine assists as Cleveland became the first team since the 2015-16 Golden State Warriors to win 13 straight to begin a season. That Warriors team holds the record for most wins to begin a season with 24.

Of the previous five teams to start 13-0, four made the NBA Finals but only the 1993-94 Houston Rockets won the title, according to ESPN Research.

Darius Garland scored 25 points and Evan Mobley had 14 points with seven rebounds.

Jared McCain had a career-high 34 for the 76ers, who played without Paul George and Joel Embiid on the second night of a back-to-back as part of left knee injury maintenance. Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 20 points and Caleb Martin had 18 for the Sixers.

Ducks place Fowler, Fabbri on injured reserve

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Anaheim Ducks have placed forward Robby Fabbri and defenseman Cam Fowler on injured reserve.

The Ducks made the moves Wednesday before their home game against Vegas. Anaheim recalled center Jansen Harkins and defenseman Drew Helleson from their AHL affiliate in San Diego.

Fowler missed the Ducks' past two games with an upper-body injury. The veteran defenseman leads the Ducks in ice time this season and has recorded two assists in 12 games while seeing ice time on the penalty-killing units.

Fabbri joined Anaheim last summer in a trade with Detroit, and he has two goals in 14 games for the Ducks. He missed practice Tuesday with an undisclosed injury after playing against Columbus on Sunday.

Forward Mason McTavish missed the Ducks' game against the Blue Jackets with an upper-body injury, but he hasn't been placed on injured reserve.

Anaheim (5-7-2) snapped a four-game skid Sunday with a 4-2 win over the Blue Jackets.

Ex-Uruguay striker Forlán loses pro doubles debut

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay -- Former soccer star Diego Forlán's newfound career in professional tennis started with a doubles loss Wednesday at the Uruguay Open.

The 45-year-old Forlán and Federico Coria of Argentina lost 6-1, 6-2 to Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos in the first round of the ATP's second-tier challenger tour.

Forlán and Coria were granted wild-card entries to play doubles in the tournament.

The Uruguay striker retired from soccer in 2019 after playing with top clubs such as Manchester United, Atlético Madrid and Internazionale. Forlán was the 2010 World Cup's best player and joint highest scorer; and netted twice in the 2011 Copa América final to help Uruguay win their first continental trophy in 16 years.

For the past five years, Forlán has taken part in amateur master's tennis tournaments, and had some success that earned him the invitation to play in Uruguay's biggest professional tournament.

Lamar at a loss to explain woes against Steelers

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 13 November 2024 17:04

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- In a season when it feels as if Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has had all the answers, the reigning NFL Most Valuable Player was stumped Wednesday.

Heading into Sunday's road showdown against the Steelers, Jackson essentially shrugged his shoulders when asked why he struggles against Pittsburgh more than any other team.

"I don't know what it is, man," he said. "Last year, we [were] supposed to [beat] them, but things just didn't go our way; the football gods weren't on our side. But it's a whole other year, it's a new year, [and] I'm looking forward to the game."

Jackson is 1-3 against the Steelers and 17-5 against the other AFC North teams (Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns). Pittsburgh is the only team against which he has thrown more interceptions (seven) than touchdown passes (four).

In Jackson's only game against Pittsburgh last season, the biggest issue was holding onto the ball. The Ravens had a handful of dropped passes, including two in the end zone, in a 17-10 road loss at Pittsburgh in October 2023.

"We don't live in the past game; we don't live in the past record," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said. "None of that matters. It's the next game. But we'll look at it scientifically; you go back and watch all the games and try to make sure that we are doing the things that we need to do to win this particular game."

When it comes to rivalries, Jackson talked about how he hated losing to the Lauderdale Lakes Vikings in youth football in South Florida. But Jackson said he doesn't feel differently about the Steelers than any other team on Baltimore's schedule despite Pittsburgh winning seven of the past eight meetings.

"I hate every team in the league when I'm going against them," Jackson said. "I don't have [any] heart for a team when I'm going against them -- I'm trying to win -- because they don't have a heart for me, when they're going against me. Probably, after the game, it's all love, but on that field, no."

Jackson is quarterbacking an offense that ranks first in total yards (440.2) and points (31.8), which is why he's the front-runner for another MVP award. In his past eight games, he has thrown 22 touchdowns and one interception.

By relying more on his arm than his legs, Jackson has played differently than in the past. He says he believes everyone will have to wait until Sunday to see if that produces a different result against Pittsburgh.

"We have different guys who bring different things to the table for us to help us out on the offensive side of the ball," Jackson said. "But I can't call it."

Bruins' Lindholm out weeks with lower-body injury

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 13 November 2024 14:59

Bruins defenseman Hampus Lindholm will be sidelined for multiple weeks with a lower-body injury, coach Jim Montgomery said Wednesday.

Lindholm, 30, departed Tuesday night's 3-2 victory at St. Louis late in the first period after blocking a shot by Blues defenseman Justin Faulk.

Lindholm has recorded three goals and four assists in 17 games this season.

An All-Star in the 2022-23 season, Lindholm has 313 points (73 goals, 240 assists) and a plus-147 rating in 762 career games with the Anaheim Ducks (2013-22) and Bruins. The Ducks drafted the Swede sixth overall in 2012.

Boston's blue line was already short-handed, with Andrew Peeke considered week-to-week with an upper-body injury.

Rodgers to play in 2025? 'I think so,' QB says

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 13 November 2024 14:50

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, mired in one of the worst statistical seasons of his legendary career, wants to play in 2025.

"I think so, yeah," he said Wednesday, 19 days shy of his 41st birthday.

It wasn't a resounding yes, perhaps because he knows that organizational changes in the offseason could impact his decision.

Rodgers, who said last offseason that he hopes to play "two or three or four more years," indicated the team's disappointing season (3-7) hasn't changed his feelings.

"Not really, not for the negative," he said. "Not really, no."

Rodgers, coming back from Achilles surgery, has battled hamstring, knee and ankle injuries, but he hasn't missed any snaps because of injury. The four-time MVP, however, hasn't played up to his usual level. He's ranked 24th out of 32 qualified passers in Total QBR (52.0), with 15 touchdown passes, 7 interceptions and a career-low 6.4 yards per attempt.

"I'm not playing as well as I would've liked to play, for sure," he said. "The beauty in this game is it's a team game. The frustrating part is that if you're a great competitor, you hold yourself to a standard that's not unrealistic, and I haven't reached that standard this year."

Rodgers is under contract for 2025, but none of his compensation is guaranteed at this point. To bring him back, the Jets would have to exercise a $35 million option bonus. He also has a $2.5 million base salary. His cap charge would be a manageable $23.5 million.

Rodgers expressed optimism, saying "the verdict is still not out on this season yet." The Jets, coming off a 31-6 drubbing by the Arizona Cardinals, face the Indianapolis Colts (4-6) on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

The Jets are 1-4 since firing Robert Saleh and replacing him with Jeff Ulbrich as interim coach. Ulbrich, who doubles as the defensive coordinator, received a strong endorsement from Rodgers.

"I feel like he's done some really good things," Rodgers said. "I think Brick is an NFL head coach, whether it's here moving forward or down the line. I mean, he's a leader of men and I'll stand by him. I'd love to play for him until the end. So have a lot of love and respect for him."

Rodgers delivered a similar vote of confidence for Saleh late last season, and it carried a lot of weight with ownership, which retained Saleh after a second straight 7-10 finish. Part of the thinking was that the team, with a healthy Rodgers, would rebound strongly. That hasn't happened, and now there could be a new coach and general manager in 2025.

Rodgers, 3-7 for the first time in his 20-year career, has been "100% supportive of this entire staff and this entire team in getting this thing fixed," said Ulbrich, adding that Rodgers suggests "little tweaks here and there" about game planning and scheduling.

Ulbrich is taking a back-to-basics approach this week, calling for full-pads practices to improve the Jets' shoddy tackling. They missed 20 tackles against the Cardinals, according to Next Gen Stats. He conducted a tackling presentation for the entire team on Wednesday, not just the defense.

He also made a change in the defensive lineup, benching safety Tony Adams this week, a source said. It's a surprising move, considering Adams -- a two-year starter -- is the Jets' third-leading tackler.

"We're going to get back to fundamentals and basics," Ulbrich said, adding, "That is something we can improve, and we will improve." Rodgers applauded the approach.

"It's a wake-up call for all of us," he said. "Anytime you lose in general, but when you lose the way we've lost this year, I think you have to check the process ... and if it's not resulting in the performance that you want -- and this is for all of us, myself included -- then you have to make alterations."

There's no love lost between the Los Angeles Lakers and Memphis Grizzlies, who face off for the second time this season Wednesday (10 p.m. ET on ESPN).

The two sides memorably matched up in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs, with the Lakers victorious in six games. The series was headlined by the interactions between LeBron James and then-Grizzlies forward Dillon Brooks. However, the bad blood between the Western Conference foes started earlier than that.

James and Desmond Bane engaged in trash talk during a January 2022 game, including James yelling at the Memphis guard: "That's your last motherf---ing time. That's your last time disrespecting me."

It created a viral moment, but, over two years later, any potential bad history looked to be in the rearview mirror. At least that's what it seemed until last week.

Memphis defeated Los Angeles 131-114 at home and the beef slightly percolated. Here's a look back at the bad blood between the two sides from that Nov. 6 matchup.

Ja and LeBron exchange gestures

Ja Morant is often in the middle of any dustup with the Lakers. Playing his first game against the team since last January, he came prepared to make noise.

After scoring against Gabe Vincent near the end of the first half, Morant hit the "too small" celebration. One possession later, James responded with his own version of the celebration after scoring over Morant.

The Grizzlies star remembered the moment, trolling James on X with a GIF that ended with someone flashing an "L."

Bane finds a way to jab at James

Bane didn't use the oblique injury that kept him out of the game as an excuse to not throw a shot at James.

Former Lakers guard Scotty Pippen Jr. played a key role in Memphis' win with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. He also blocked James late in the fourth quarter.

While being interviewed postgame by the Grizzlies broadcast, Bane jumped in and referenced Pippen's defensive play in a petty way.

"Y'all see the way he snatched that ball from that old man over there? From that old man over there?" Bane said, emphasizing the "old man."

Ja keeps it candid postgame

When asked what it was about this Lakers team that got Morant going, he simply said: "I don't like them." He went on to explain his reasoning, referencing the 2023 series and a game late last season.

"They knocked me out of the playoffs," Morant said. "And then last year we had a game, and they came here and popped it on our home floor when I was in street clothes. I wasn't tonight."

The two-time All-Star was pointing to a 123-120 win by the Lakers in the penultimate game of the regular season. After a late steal, James pulled off a reverse dunk and landed right in front of Morant. The two briefly engaged before James chuckled on his way back to the Lakers bench.

James dismisses any bad blood

The back-and-forth between Morant and James wasn't anything more than what the essence of basketball is, according to the Lakers star.

He pointed to the "too small" interactions as "two guys from the inner city that love to compete."

"We all grew up playing on the blacktop, playing outside and competing at a high level when there was no cameras around, it was a bunch of just s--- talking around and playing the game," he said.

With Morant out against the Lakers this week due to an injury, it's unclear how he will contribute to the next chapter in this rising rivalry between Western Conference opponents.

Williams' Medal of Freedom, MVP up for auction

BOSTON -- Ted Williams' Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was presented to him by fellow World War II naval aviator George H.W. Bush, is among the items up for auction from the memorabilia collection of the ballplayer's daughter.

The medal is expected to fetch between $25,000 and $50,000. Other lots include Williams' 1946 AL Most Valuable Player Award and the silver baseball bat he earned for winning the AL batting title in 1958 (both estimated to go between $150,000 and $300,000).

The items in the auction belonged to the Hall of Famer and had been held by his daughter, Claudia, who died in December. A first batch of items from the collection went up for auction in 2012 at Fenway Park and garnered more than $5 million.

Also included in the auction was the "hitter.net" hat that Williams wore for a pregame ceremony at the 1999 All-Star Game in Boston, when the current players were so eager to meet him that they had to be told to let him leave the field so the game could begin.

Gatland comfortable with questions on his future

Published in Rugby
Wednesday, 13 November 2024 10:01

Gatland was asked on Sunday whether he thought his position was under threat and responded by citing a negative media narrative.

He has since seen former players criticise his side following the Fiji defeat such as Jamie Roberts, Mike Phillips and Dan Biggar, while Wales fly-half Sam Davies has stated "it is time for a change".

Gatland said: "I never have been critical of anyone having an opinion.

"I encourage people to have an opinion. That's always healthy for the sport."

Roberts claims Wales are the worst they have ever been in the professional era and that they are not moving forward. He also did not agree with Gatland's positive "spin" after the Fiji defeat.

The former Wales centre is a WRU board member after being appointed as a non-executive director in November 2023.

Gatland does not believe there is a conflict of interest.

"I don't have any issues with it, he is paid to do a job from a punditry point of view," said Gatland.

"I know there are a couple of people who have contacted him and sent him messages and said he was a bit out of line, but that's their opinion as well."

Phillips, who made 99 international appearances for Wales and the British and Irish Lions, wrote on social media he thought Gatland should go, and criticised the way the coach had treated him and other players at the end of their careers.

"I hadn't seen the comments, my son rung me about them and was probably more upset about them than I was," said Gatland.

"Phillsy [Mike Phillips] was a great player for Wales, probably one of the best to pull on the Welsh jersey.

"Probably some of the things that have happened to him have been a little bit sad. I take some of those comments with a little bit of a grain of salt."

RSN operator finalizes agreement with Amazon

Published in Hockey
Wednesday, 13 November 2024 13:48

Diamond Sports Group, the bankrupt operator of regional sports networks, has announced a commercial agreement with the streaming giant Amazon that will allow in-market fans to watch their teams through Prime Video.

The agreement extends to Diamond's 16 RSNs in 31 states and will be available "as an add-on subscription" for those who already have access to Amazon Prime, limited to customers corresponding within each team's designated geographic area, Diamond announced in a news release Wednesday.

Pricing and a start date have yet to be determined. The agreement is non-exclusive, which means fans can also stream local games through the FanDuel Sports Network website.

In a statement, Diamond CEO David Preschlack wrote: "Partnering with Prime Video, one of the largest streaming destinations in the U.S., and making FanDuel Sports Network available as part of their add on subscriptions, creates a tremendous opportunity for us to expand our reach and better connect with viewers. Our partnerships with Prime Video and FanDuel combine with our agreements with team, league and distribution partners to support a transformative reorganization of our business, and a leading linear and digital offering that will continue driving long-term value and enhanced experiences for our partners and fans."

Diamond announced as part of a restructuring support agreement in January that Amazon would become a minority investor, infusing the company with $115 million, while also entering into a commercial arrangement that would provide access to Diamond's services via Prime Video. Roughly seven months later, while simultaneously negotiating a $1.93 billion media-rights deal with the NBA and the WNBA, Amazon pulled out as an investor.

Diamond, though, still hoped to negotiate a commercial agreement with Amazon -- and was finally able to finalize one the day before its confirmation hearing.

Diamond, which has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy for 20 months, retains linear and digital streaming rights for 13 NBA teams, including the: Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat, Orlando Magic, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio Spurs and Memphis Grizzlies. It also has the following eight NHL teams in its portfolio: Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, St. Louis Blues and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Diamond announced earlier this week that it would offer single-game offerings for direct-to-consumer NBA and NHL games beginning Dec. 5, with individual games starting at $6.99.

The company is still seemingly sorting through its baseball contracts. Diamond declared in court in October that it would retain only one pre-existing MLB deal -- for the Atlanta Braves, a team for whom they do not possess streaming rights. Diamond has since announced a multi-year streaming and linear agreement with the St. Louis Cardinals and is close to finalize similar deals with the Los Angeles Angels and Miami Marlins. The company is still in talks with the Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals and Tampa Bay Rays, a source familiar with the process said.

Five MLB teams have parted ways with Diamond since the start of October, a list that includes the Minnesota Twins, Milwaukee Brewers, Cleveland Guardians, Texas Rangers and, more recently, Cincinnati Reds.

MLB and the Braves formally filed an objection to Diamond's reorganization plan last Friday, writing that they possess "grave concerns that, if the plan is confirmed, there is a substantial likelihood that the debtors will find themselves once again in financial distress and/or bankruptcy court in the near future." Diamond faces a Wednesday deadline to file a response.
