$26,000 Point Fund For All Star Indiana Invasion

Published in Racing
Monday, 26 April 2021 12:35

BROWNSBURG, Ind. – In less than one month, the FloRacing All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil 1 will take center stage in the Hoosier State.

The series is set to battle for four straight nights at three Indiana bullrings, all of which kicking-off on Thursday and Friday, May 20-21, with a two-night stay at the new Circle City Raceway in Indianapolis, Ind.

Dubbed the All Stars Indiana Invasion presented by Rayce Rudeen Foundation, competitors will not only duel for a total winner’s share equaling $48,000 over the four-day extended weekend, but a points fund equaling $26,000 will also be distributed among the top-five in the final weekend standings. The All Stars Indiana Invasion presented by Rayce Rudeen Foundation champion will be awarded a $10,000 top prize, with second through fifth awarded $7,000, $4,000, $3,000, and $2,000, respectively.

“I can’t wait for the Indiana Invasion,” said Kevin Rudeen of Rudeen Racing and Rayce Rudeen Foundation. “Four nights of top tier racing on amazing tracks. I am honored the Rayce Rudeen Foundation gets to be part of such an enormous event. I hope the work of RRF brings a halt to the stigmatism of addiction. With help from the All Star Circuit of Champions, as well as the three tracks and our foundation, I hope we can get information out to help those who are or who have loved ones battling addiction. I don’t want anyone to go through the loss that my family and I have been through. I cannot thank Tony Stewart with All Stars, as well as FloRacing for their support of this event.”

The Circle City visit will not only activate a high profile weekend for the All Stars, but the All Star doubleheader will also be the facility’s debut event and will award a total winner’s share equaling $16,000; $6,000 on Thursday and $10,000 on Friday.

The four-night Indiana takeover will continue Saturday, May 22, with a visit to Gas City I-69 Speedway. Only the second All Star appearance in Series history, the Saturday night showstopper will award a $6,000 payday. Dale Blaney, the all-time win leader with the series, was the first and only All Star to win at Gas City, scoring a victory on Sept. 17, 2004.

Growing into one of the most sought after prizes on the All Star campaign trail, the All Stars Indiana Invasion presented by Rayce Rudeen Foundation will conclude on Sunday, May 23, with the third running of the annual Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race. Like years prior, a $26,000 payday will be awarded to the main event winner.

Conducted at three different tracks during its three year run, the Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race held its inaugural event in 2019 at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. The 2020 edition was hosted at the Plymouth Dirt Track in Plymouth, Wisconsin. Three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and All Star owner, Tony Stewart, won the first-ever Rayce Rudeen Foundation Race. Elk Grove, California’s Kyle Larson earned last season’s $26,000 share.

Kaulig Reveals Two Darlington Throwback Schemes

Published in Racing
Monday, 26 April 2021 12:48

LEXINGTON, N.C. – Kaulig Racing officials have announce two of the team’s paint schemes for the Throwback Weekend at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.

Jeb Burton’s No. 10 Nutrien Ag Solutions Chevrolet will honor his father, Ward Burton, and his first NASCAR Cup Series win. Ward Burton earned his first win at Rockingham (N.C.) Speedway in 1995 during the AC Delco 400.

“It’s pretty cool to be able to honor my dad’s 1995 MBNA scheme from his first, Cup Series win at Rockingham for our Darlington throwback scheme,” said Jeb Burton. “Dad and my uncle (Jeff Burton) have had a lot of success at Darlington, so it’s a special track for our family. I’ve only raced there once in the Cup Series about six years ago, so I am excited to get back there. It’s a great looking car, and I appreciate Nutrien Ag Solutions for allowing it to happen. Hopefully it will be a good weekend for our team.”

Justin Haley will throw back to LeafFilter’s first NASCAR Cup Series primary sponsorship in 2014 during the throwback weekend at Darlington Raceway.

Justin Haley will pilot the No. 11 LeafFilter Gutter Protection Chevrolet that will garner a special scheme paying tribute to LeafFilter’s first NASCAR Cup Series race as a primary partner. The award-winning company started by Matt Kaulig made its Cup Series debut as a sponsor of Go Fas Racing in 2014 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

“I’m pumped to be able to race this scheme at Darlington this year,” said Kaulig. “I started LeafFilter from the basement of my house, and then was able to be the primary partner of a NASCAR Cup Series car in 2014. Now, 7 years later, LeafFilter has won three races with Justin Haley and as a company has grown beyond my wildest dreams across the United States and Canada, so it’s amazing to see how far we have come in a few short years. I know Justin (Haley) will make us proud.”

The Steakhouse Elite 200 at Darlington Raceway will take place on Saturday, May 8.

Le Mans Winner & Indy 500 Starter Bill Whittington, 71

Monday, 26 April 2021 13:16

INDIANAPOLIS – Five-time Indianapolis 500 starter and 24 Hours of Le Mans winner Bill Whittington died in a private plane crash April 23 in Arizona. He was 71 years old.

Whittington’s first four starts at Indianapolis, from 1980 through 1983, came with his family-owned team. His best result came in his final start, in 1985, when he placed 14th in the No. 12 Arciero Wines March/Cosworth owned by Frank Arciero.

Texas native Whittington’s best career Indianapolis start came in 1982, when he qualified sixth in the No. 94 Whittington/Warner W. Hogdon March/Cosworth. That year also was significant because it marked the only time in the history of the Indianapolis 500 that three brothers started in the same race, with brothers Don and Dale also in the field of 33 drivers.

Bill Whittington’s best career finish in limited CART starts from 1980-85 was fifth in 1985 at Mid-Ohio for Arciero Racing.

Whittington found more success in global and North American sports car racing.

He and his brother Don teamed with Klaus Ludwig to win the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans in a Porsche 935 K3 fielded by Porsche Kremer Racing. Bill Whittington also finished second in the IMSA GT standings behind friend and Blue Thunder Racing teammate Randy Lanier in 1984, and his eight-year IMSA career ended with 14 victories.

Away from the race track, Bill Whittington was a part of a drug smuggling ring and in 1985 was charged with income tax evasion and conspiracy to smuggle marijuana into the United States from Colombia. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and was released after serving five years.

His brother, Don Whittington, was also arrested and spent 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to money laundering.

Daly Returns To Carlin For Texas IndyCar Twinbill

FORT WORTH, Texas – Conor Daly will return to Carlin’s NTT IndyCar Series program for this weekend’s doubleheader at Texas Motor Speedway.

This marks the third-straight season Daly has shared driving duties of the Carlin No. 59. Max Chilton will continue to drive the No. 59 entry on road courses and will return to the team for the GMR Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in mid-May.

Daly has contested the first two races of the season for Ed Carpenter Racing.

“Obviously, I’m very excited and thankful to be back with Carlin for this weekend,” said Daly. “It’s a package with which we’ve accomplished a lot together in a short amount of time and I’m excited to get back to work with the guys. I appreciate the opportunity and thank Chily and Trevor for the support and entrusting me with the car once again and also Power Plus! for joining me this weekend.”

Daly enjoyed several highlights with the team last season, including earning his first P1 Award after claiming the pole in the first race of last year’s doubleheader at Iowa Speedway.

“We’re very pleased to have Conor back with the team, we’ve enjoyed some successful races together in the past and we’re aiming to continue where we left off with our oval form,” said team owner Grahame Chilton.

Daly will race with the backing of his personal sponsor, Power Plus! this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway.

Mallicoat Impressing Early In IMCA Northern SportMods

Published in Racing
Monday, 26 April 2021 14:00

BOONE, Iowa – Izac Mallicoat’s first Karl Kustoms Northern SportMod championship preceded his first win in the IMCA division by not quite two weeks.

The top driver in point standings for the four-race Frostbuster, Mallicoat won his first feature at hometown Boone Speedway on April 17, holding off Johnathon Logue.

The magnitude of the accomplishment didn’t escape the 14-year-old, a baby in the stands when his father Jason was crowned SportMod champion at the 2006 IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals fueled by Casey’s.

“It was pretty exciting. It was cool to get my first win at Boone, which I think is one of the hardest tracks to win at,” said Mallicoat, an eighth grader at Boone Middle School. “I never thought I’d get my first win so soon.”

Mallicoat was a grade schooler when he started racing go karts on dirt and asphalt, progressing to winged carts before getting his feet wet in a SportMod.

His feature win came in his ninth start of the season.

Lonnie Hodges led early on before Mallicoat slipped into the lead on lap three. Logue, twice the track champion at Boone and a three-time Super Nationals king, was on his tail by lap four and threw one challenge after another at the leader, to no avail.

“We had a lot of family and friends there so I could hear people cheering when I pulled in. My dad was kind of emotional,” he said. “Then we loaded up, went home and had a celebration in the shop.”

Like every race car driver at every level, Mallicoat hopes many more such celebrations follow.

“I’ve been around racing all my life. I think it was meant to be,” he said. “I would like to be able to make a living racing. I feel like we’ll work our way up to a Modified and keep making progress. You never know what will happen but we want to be the best in what we’re in and go from there.”

Jets' Ehlers out for remainder of regular season

Published in Hockey
Monday, 26 April 2021 12:17

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice says forward Nikolaj Ehlers is out for the remainder of the regular season with an upper-body injury.

Maurice said Ehlers suffered the injury in the Jets' 4-1 loss to the Maple Leafs on Saturday.

The Winnipeg coach said he couldn't tell exactly when Ehlers was hurt as he was involved in a number of hits during the game. Ehlers did go to the Jets' locker room after a third-period collision with Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin, but he returned to finish the game.

Maurice said he is "confident" Ehlers will be back for the postseason.

Losing Ehlers, who has 21 goals and 25 assists in 47 games this season, comes as the Jets are fighting to solidify a top spot in the North Division ahead of the postseason.

Winnipeg entered Monday's game against visiting Edmonton in second place in the North, one point ahead of the Oilers and eight points back of the division-leading Maple Leafs.

Winnipeg has played two more games than Edmonton and one fewer game than Toronto.

The Jets have nine games remaining this season, including two against the Oilers and one against the Maple Leafs.

Flames' Hanafin will need season-ending surgery

CALGARY, Alberta -- Calgary Flames defenseman Noah Hanifin will need season-ending shoulder surgery.

The 24-year-old was injured early in the first period of Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens.

Hanifin was tangling with Canadiens forward Corey Perry along the boards near the Flames bench when his left leg went out from underneath him. Hanifin's shoulder made contact with the ice as he went down.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound defender has four goals and 11 assists and was a minus-2 in 47 games this season.

The loss of a top-four defenseman may hurt Calgary's faint playoff hopes.

Headed into Monday, the Flames were four points back of the Canadiens, who were holding down the North Division's fourth and final playoff spot. The two teams play each other Monday night, but Montreal has a game in hand on Calgary.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Shearer, Henry make Prem HOF, six to follow

Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer and ex-Arsenal forward Thierry Henry have become the first two players inducted into the Premier League's Hall of Fame, it was announced on Monday.

Shearer is the Premier League's all-time top scorer, having netted 260 goals across 14 Premier League seasons with Newcastle and Blackburn Rovers.

The former England international, who won the Premier League title in the 1994-95 season with Blackburn, is the only player to have scored 100 goals in the competition for two different clubs.

"When you look at some of the unbelievable players to have graced the Premier League. I feel very honoured to join the Hall of Fame," Shearer said in a statement.

"All I ever wanted to be was a professional footballer. It was my dream to do that, to win trophies and score at St James' Park, to wear the No. 9. I enjoyed every minute of it."

Former France international Henry scored a club-record 175 Premier League goals in 258 matches for Arsenal.

He won the league title twice and was a key member of the "Invincibles" team who went unbeaten during the 2003-04 campaign. He also provided a joint-record 20 assists in 2002-03.

"To be inducted alongside Alan Shearer as the two first inductees into the Premier League Hall of Fame is more than special," Henry said.

"When I was young, I was just trying to make sure I could get a pair of boots and now we're talking about the Hall of Fame."

The league said the Hall of Fame "celebrates the talent and achievements" of those who have featured in the division since its inception in 1992 and that players must have been retired as of Aug. 1, 2020 to be eligible.
