Welcome to our live report of the fifth day of the Australia-India Test from Brisbane. Join us for updates, analysis and colour. You can find our traditional ball-by-ball commentary here

*Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local.

10.50am: Demons

Are non-existent so far. Maybe one from Starc has kicked up as goes around the wicket to aim for those cracks. But in general, it's been consistent bounce today. Perhaps that has a little to do with Australia being fuller, and maybe the moisture underneath has helped too. To a smaller extent, the roller must have had an effect. But nothing scary so far for India.

10.08am: Lengths

These are all the dismissals in this game filtered for bowled, lbw and caught. A little caveat that it also includes wickets off spinners. But even accounting for that, the story is clear - it's the fuller balls that are doing most damage. We're likely to see more purchase for the relatively shorter lengths today, given the cracks and all, but Cummins capitalising perfectly this morning already. Pin the batsmen back, have them see a few kick up at them, and you can find the nicks off a good length.

9.37am: On this day

Thirteen years ago, Irfan Pathan was named Man of the Match as India beat Australia in Perth. Things weren't quite on par the way they are now, but this is the kind of thing that'd satisfy the optimistic Indian fan. H/T to Gaurav Sundararaman for spotting this.

9.03am

We head into the last day of this sensational series with the opportunity for plenty of drama. India need 324 to win the series, Australia need 10 wickets. In both their paths is a glum forecast, but only one team really NEEDS to win. And that is Australia. A draw doesn't do too much harm to India in terms of WTC prospects - considering they have a big home series coming - and they would get to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. For Australia, it's not that simple on either of those fronts. But perhaps the one thing they have going for them is that it is a lot easier to force a result with the ball rather than with the bat on this pitch and in these conditions. This is the piece with all the WTC scenarios for the two teams.

And here is some info about the weather forecast for today. We are scheduled for 98 overs on paper.

NFL changes combine format; won't be in Indy

Published in Breaking News
Monday, 18 January 2021 16:13

The NFL's coaches, scouts and personnel executives will not descend on Indianapolis in February for the annual scouting combine, as the league has altered the event to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

The combine, which has been held in Indianapolis since 1987, will be altered due to COVID-19 precautions. In a memo obtained by ESPN that was sent Monday to team executives, athletic trainers, team physicians and head coaches, the NFL outlined the format for this year's run-up to the draft.

Routinely, around 330 of the draft's top prospects are invited to the combine each year, an event whose official name is the National Invitational Camp.

The prospects are put through on-field workouts, a battery of psychological testing, in-person interviews with individual teams and an extensive medical exam.

This year, all on-field workouts will be conducted at on-campus pro days, and Monday's memo outlines that the league will try to have as much uniformity in the on-field drills as possible to give teams the ability to compare the workouts from one site to another. The memo does not specifically outline what COVID-19 precautions will be in place at the on-campus pro days but indicates that more details about how team personnel are to attend the pro days will come at a later date.

All interviews between the prospects and team officials will be conducted virtually, as will the psychological testing. The memo said the schedule for interviews will be coordinated by the staff at the NIC.

The medical exams, for the most part, are expected to be conducted in a combination of virtual interviews between players and each team's medical staffs, to go with exams done at medical facilities near the prospect's home campus.

A select number of prospects, the memo said, will be asked to travel to one or more designated sites for a more comprehensive exam -- "likely in early April,'' according to the memo -- that can be attended by one physician and one athletic trainer from each team.

Those in-person exams are expected to be conducted over a two- or three-day period. The memo said more specifics will be sent to teams in the weeks to come.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is in the NFL's concussion protocol, and that's really all we can say about his status six days before the AFC Championship Game.

We don't know how long he will be sidelined. We don't know if he will be able to play Sunday. We don't even know for sure if he suffered a concussion.

What we do know is that brain health was one of the major storylines of the NFL's divisional playoff round. Mahomes was removed from the Chiefs' victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday after a hit at the end of a run left him staggering. A day earlier, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was ruled out of a loss to the Buffalo Bills after his head slammed to the ground.

What's in store for Mahomes this week? Let's take a closer look.

How could Mahomes be in the concussion protocol if he didn't suffer a concussion?

First off, we don't know one way or the other what Mahomes was diagnosed with. And importantly, it's not required for a player to have been immediately diagnosed with a concussion in order to be put in the protocol. All the Chiefs have confirmed is that he's in the protocol. On Monday, coach Andy Reid stopped short of saying that Mahomes had suffered a concussion.

Why would the NFL do this?

In 2018, the NFL adjusted its protocol to require in-game evaluations for "all players demonstrating gross motor instability (e.g., stumbling or falling to the ground when trying to stand) to determine the cause of the instability." That roughly fits what happened Sunday to Mahomes. The protocol goes on to say that if a doctor "determines the instability to be neurologically caused, the player is designated a 'No-Go' and may not return to play."

This change was in response to the scary injury suffered in Dec. 2017 by Houston Texans quarterback Tom Savage, who could be seen shaking on the ground after a hit but was allowed to remain in the game. He was later ruled out and diagnosed with a concussion. That adjustment allowed doctors to rule players out of games after examining them for these symptoms.

Mahomes, in fact, was ruled out even though he was running in the stadium tunnel after the injury, Reid said.

Does it matter if Mahomes actually suffered a concussion?

Of course. But whether he did or didn't, he must pass through the same five-step process to be cleared for a return.

What are those steps?

The first thing you should know is that prior to the season, every NFL player takes neurological and balancing tests when in a noninjured state to provide a "normal" score. Those results can later be used to help diagnose a concussion, and to determine when a player's neurological activity and balance has returned to its previous state following a brain injury. The five steps are:

  • Step 1: Based on symptoms, the player can engage in light stretching, balance training and eventually progress to light aerobic exercise.

  • Step 2: The player can graduate toward cardiovascular exercise and dynamic stretching, and then take neurological and balance tests. He can pass through this step once those test results match his baseline scores.

  • Step 3: The player can move toward a limited amount of football-specific exercise. That includes up to 30 minutes of practice time, under the supervision of an athletic trainer.

  • Step 4: Football activities can increase to noncontact drills such as throwing and running. Another set of tests must again show baseline results.

  • Step 5: This requires the team doctor to clear the player for contact. Once that happens, the player must be examined by an independent neurological consultant (INC). If the "INC" affirms the team doctor's decision, the player is cleared to practice full and play in the team's next game.

How long will all of that take?

The protocols intentionally carry no time requirements. They do not require a player to sit out a game, largely because the science of concussions show that brain injuries heal at unpredictable rates. Players could conceivably return to baseline quickly, without missing a game, or they could miss multiple games or even the remainder of a season.

Mahomes exits game after big hit

Patrick Mahomes is ruled out for the rest of the game after taking a big hit and having to be helped off the field.

So there is no data at all on that?

That's not entirely true. According to the NFL, using data from the 2015-19 seasons, the median length of time for quarterbacks to emerge from the concussion protocol is seven days.

The AFC Championship is a really important game. Don't players push through injuries all the time?

It is and they do, but the NFL built this protocol to ensure that doesn't happen with brain and neurological injuries. By requiring a return to baseline test results, the NFL's implicit policy is that a player with a brain or neurological injury can't return until he is fully healed. Football contact after only a partial recovery can exacerbate the injury.

Mahomes isn't supposed to be able to "will" himself back on the field or "suck it up." And the Chiefs aren't supposed to even have the opportunity to take the kind of calculated risk they do when they allow a player back on the field when he has, say, a mildly sprained knee.

How does the NFL prevent that?

The biggest distinction of the concussion protocol is that it requires an independent doctor to confirm the return. That doctor is not affiliated with the team or player but has been approved jointly by the league and the NFL Players Association. The final step of getting clearance from the independent doctor is intended as a failsafe for either the player or the team acting too aggressively.

On Monday, Reid told reporters: "There was a chance back in the day that Patrick comes back in [the game]. You saw him run up the tunnel. By the time he got to that point he was feeling pretty good. But there's a certain protocol you have to follow and that takes it out of the trainer's hand and the player's hand and the doctor's hand."

So when will we know more?

This will be a story for the entire week. It's possible we'll find out when (and if) Mahomes has moved on to Step 3, based on the Chiefs' injury participation report for practice. Otherwise, it's possible we won't know if Mahomes will be able to play until the weekend. The Bills-Chiefs game will kick off at 6:40 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Mahomes himself has suffered one reported concussion in his career, during the 2014 college season at Texas Tech. He returned to play in the team's next game, which was two weeks later because of a scheduled bye.

Sources: Wizards eye midweek return to practice

Published in Basketball
Monday, 18 January 2021 16:23

Despite reeling with six remaining healthy players, the Washington Wizards are hopeful they can resume practicing as soon as Wednesday -- nine days after the franchise's last game amid a coronavirus outbreak within the team, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Through a difficult stretch of seven positive coronavirus tests among players -- a player and a staff member tested positive on Monday, sources confirmed -- a resumption of the Wizards' season could be close midweek should the franchise avoid new positive tests on Tuesday and Wednesday, sources said.

The NBA postponed a fifth consecutive Wizards game -- this time, against Charlotte on Wednesday -- and it remained unclear whether the NBA would push the Wizards to play a scheduled game against Milwaukee on Friday. Even if the Wizards are able to muster eight eligible players for Friday, the NBA could decide to give the franchise more time to ramp up its available players for a return to NBA-level caliber.

The Wizards could soon start to get players cleared under coronavirus protocols to resume participation midweek, sources said. Players testing positive for the coronavirus must isolate between 10 to 14 days, depending on individual recovery periods.

The Wizards are 3-8 on the season, and they lost starting center Thomas Bryant to a torn ACL in his left knee on Jan. 9. The Wizards applied for a $4.2 million disabled player exception, sources said, which will allow them a slot to acquire a player for a contract that runs through the end of the season.

The NBA and National Basketball Players Association are discussing adding a two-way roster spot for teams during the pandemic, sources told ESPN. A two-way contract allows for a player -- on a partial $450,000 salary -- to participate in 50 of the 72 regular-season games in the truncated season.

The Washington Post first reported the Wizards' two new positive tests for the coronavirus on Monday.

Padres to acquire Pirates' Musgrove, sources say

Published in Baseball
Monday, 18 January 2021 17:01

The San Diego Padres are in agreement on a deal to acquire right-hander Joe Musgrove from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources tell ESPN's Jeff Passan.

The trade for Musgrove is pending medical reviews, per sources, and will be sending a large package of prospects back to the Pirates. Hudson Head, a well-regarded center fielder, is expected to be among the group heading to Pittsburgh.

The trade also involves the New York Mets. The Padres are sending left-hander Joey Lucchesi to the Mets, according to multiple reports. Meanwhile, Mets prospect catcher Endy Rodriguez is headed to the Pirates, a source told ESPN's Kiley McDaniel.

Musgrove, 28, was 1-5 with a 3.86 ERA in eight starts for the Pirates in the coronavirus pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Musgrove, the team's Opening Day starter in 2020, is set to make $4.45 million in 2021 after he and the Pirates agreed to a contract last Friday to avoid arbitration.

He is 29-38 with a 4.33 ERA over 108 appearances in five major league seasons, including 83 starts.

Musgrove is the third starting pitcher acquired via trade by the Padres this offseason. San Diego acquired left-hander Blake Snell and right-hander Yu Darvish in separate blockbuster trades last month with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs, respectively.

This is the second significant trade completed by the rebuilding Pirates, who traded first baseman Josh Bell to the Washington Nationals last month.

Gravel & Big Game Unveil New Colors For WoO Run

Published in Racing
Monday, 18 January 2021 14:00

WINDOM, Minn. – Excitement is brewing as the kickoff nears for the new partnership between Big Game Motorsports and David Gravel, with a new paint scheme that was revealed Monday afternoon.

A fresh, new design has been revealed for Big Game Motorsports, with day-glo red accents on a black base and a bright read tail tank completing the look.

The livery will also promote one of sprint car racing’s greatest weeks of racing this season – The Showdown.

Big Game Motorsports owner Tod Quiring hosts a mega week of action with The Showdown, starting on June 20 with a 410ci winged sprint car event followed by two days of the Huset’s 50.

All three nights are hosted by Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, S.D., before Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., showcases the AGCO Jackson Nationals June 24-26.

The final five nights of The Showdown are World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series races with a total purse exceeding $500,000.

Additionally, if a driver is able to win the final night of the Huset’s 50 and the AGCO Jackson Nationals, he or she will bring home a whopping $180,000.

“I’m really looking forward to David coming on board with our team for 2021 and getting back to a full-time World of Outlaws schedule,” Quiring said. “I feel we have built a top-tier team to compete at the highest level.

“I’m super excited about the acquisition of Huset’s Speedway, as well. Our team has put together an extremely entertaining schedule for both Huset’s and Jackson Motorplex for 2021 that race fans won’t want to miss.”

Gravel was recently selected as the Big Game Motorsports driver and the team will return to full-time status with the World of Outlaws this year.

“I’m looking forward to this relationship with Tod and everyone in his camp,” he said. “We’ve been in talks for years and finally got to make it happen. It’s time to go and get racing again.”

Gravel also noted his excitement when looking ahead at an ambitious summer, particularly at the events at Huset’s Speedway and Jackson Motorplex.

“2020 was supposed to be an extremely exciting year for sprint car racing,” he said. “With the coronavirus we got that taken from us. I am looking forward to the big things we are going to accomplish in 2021. With Tod building the AGCO Jackson Nationals and now turning Huset’s into part of that is great. It should be a record year for sprint car racing with the record purses we’ll have.”

Big Game Motorsports’ season begins Feb. 3-7 when Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., hosts the 50th annual DIRTcar Nationals.

The first two nights of the five-day stretch are Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions races and the final three are sanctioned by the World of Outlaws.

Jackson: Kyrie purchased house for Floyd family

Published in Basketball
Monday, 18 January 2021 14:15

Brooklyn Nets guard Kyrie Irving bought a house for the family of George Floyd, according to former NBA player Stephen Jackson.

Jackson, who was a close friend of the late Floyd, revealed on "The Rematch" podcast that Irving, along with other celebrities have reached out to help Floyd's family.

"Kyrie Irving bought them a house. Lil Wayne's manager bought them a Mercedes-Benz. Barbra Streisand gave them stock in Disney," Jackson said.

The purchase happened five to six months ago, a source close to Irving confirmed to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated.

Floyd, a Black man, died in Minneapolis in May while in police custody after a white officer kneeled on Floyd's neck for more than seven minutes. His death sparked a wave of protests across the country.

Irving has been consistently active off the court on social justice matters.

In July he committed $1.5 million to supplement the income of WNBA players who chose not to play the 2020 season in their bubble, whether because of coronavirus concerns or social justice reasons.

Last week, while away from the team, Irving appeared on a Zoom call with others who were showing support for the campaign of a Manhattan district attorney candidate.

Irving has missed seven straight games due to a combination of personal reasons, NBA-mandated quarantine and a ramping up of basketball activities ahead of his return. He is averaging 27.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists in seven games this season for Brooklyn.

Pursley Earns Chili Bowl Rookie Of The Year Honors

Published in Racing
Monday, 18 January 2021 12:00

TULSA, Okla. — The battle for rookie-of-the-year honors at the 35th Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals went down to the final laps of Saturday night’s B Mains at Tulsa Expo Raceway.

While no first-year Chili Bowl competitors cracked the field for the 55-lap grand finale, a trio of 16-year-old hotshoes made it to the 20-lap B Mains during General Tire Championship Day.

Oklahoma’s Daison Pursley raced into the first B Main out of a C Main Saturday, while Ohio’s Jacob Denney and California’s Jesse Love started in the second B Main based off strong preliminary night performances earlier in the week.

All three drivers posted top-10 finishes in their preliminary night features, with Denney leading the way in that category thanks to a sixth-place run in the Monday opener that came one day after his 16th birthday.

On finale day, however, it was Pursley who shined the brightest.

The Locust Grove, Okla., native came from the C Main and finished 10th in his B Main, not advancing into the feature but setting a relatively high bar for his two challengers in the second 20-lapper.

When neither was able to equal or surpass Pursley’s accomplishment — Love ended up 14th and Denney retired early, credited with 20th — Pursley’s place in history was secured and he was named the rookie-of-the-year for the 35th edition of the Super Bowl of Midget Racing.

Pursley outdueled a star-studded lineup of 76 first-time Chili Bowl competitors for the award.

“It’s a pretty cool award to win. Everyone only gets one chance to win it, so it’s cool to add my name to that list,” Pursley said. “I can’t thank Keith (Kunz) and Pete (Willoughby) enough for letting me be a part of this team. (A B Main finish) definitely isn’t what we came here for, because everyone wants to lock it into the feature and we just didn’t do that, but we had a car to be able to do that.

“The driver just made a few mistakes there at the end that cost us a feature starting spot, but to still be the top rookie driver out of everyone that was here is a pretty neat deal.”

Denney looked set to deny Pursley in the rookie battle, floating between eighth and ninth for most of the second B Main. However, a mechanical failure in the front end of his Petry Motorsports No. 35 after contact with another car forced Denney to pull to the infield and stifled his quest for the award.

“I was just trying to get a spot on the inside, but had someone get down in front of me, and when I went to the bottom I got too far up on the berm at the wrong angle and broke the front end,” said Denney. “I knew that I had a good car. I just had to make the right moves at the right times.

“I hate it for my guys that I made a mistake there because it cost us a spot in the A Main but, hopefully, we can come back again in the future and make up for it.”

Reflecting on his week as a whole, Pursley was content with the end result but lamented not being able to perform better in his preliminary-night heat race to position himself better later in the going.

“Overall, things were really good. Like everyone says, that first heat race sets your whole weekend up, and mine put us behind the 8-ball all week long. That’s on me,” said Pursley. “The team gave me a great car, no matter what the track conditions were. A lot of people say the track conditions weren’t great (come Saturday), but if you look at all the features that (Jason) McDougal ran through and even Tucker (Klaasmeyer) ran through a little bit, the track had some passing in it. They proved that.

“We’ll definitely be here next year; this isn’t a one-and-done thing for me. We were just unlucky on the yellow (flag) in our B Main as far as having a shot to transfer,” Pursley added. “You try to make your own luck, but sometimes that’s just what racing is and you have to overcome it as best you can.”

Pursley’s hope for the future is that his rookie-of-the-year performance from the Chili Bowl will propel him to further success with Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports.

“This is one of those moments where we aren’t happy without being in the A Main, but we still beat a lot of great drivers and a lot of great cars this week,” noted Pursley. “We had a lot of good runs at the end of last year to look forward to in the midgets, so I feel like we’ll be contending to win every time we hit the track this year with KKM and I’m eager to get started with that.”

Pursley joins a long list of past Chili Bowl Rookie of the Year honorees and becomes the second straight Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports driver to win the award, joining Buddy Kofoid, who claimed the honor one year ago.

The Chili Bowl’s top rookie club also includes Zeb Wise, Gio Scelzi, 10-time World of Outlaws sprint car champion Donny Schatz and former USAC national midget titlist Spencer Bayston, among others.

The Chili Bowl Rookie of the Year Award has been presented annually since 2004 to the first-year driver that finishes highest in the alphabet soup program which headlines Saturday’s final day of competition.

Of the 18 past recipients, no Chili Bowl Rookie of the Year has finished lower than a B Main on Saturday.
