Bills hold off Colts for first playoff win since '95

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 09 January 2021 14:26

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- For the first time in a quarter of a century, the Buffalo Bills have won a playoff game.

Playing in front of a home crowd for the first time this season, the Bills beat the Indianapolis Colts 27-24 on Saturday in a wild-card game that was also their first playoff game in Orchard Park since Dec. 30, 1995, when they beat Dan Marino and the Miami Dolphins 37-22.

"It's been a long time since Bills mafia has been able to celebrate like this," quarterback Josh Allen said postgame on CBS. "But again, it's one game. I am just happy for a chance to be able to play next week."

Allen was far improved from his first playoff game last season, completing 26 of 35 passes for 324 yards and two touchdowns, adding 54 yards and another score on the ground. He became the youngest player in NFL history to throw for 300 yards and complete 70% of his passes in a playoff game, per ESPN Stats & Information.

General manager Brandon Beane, who signed a multiyear contract extension in December, said the prospect of bringing a once-proud franchise back to prominence influenced his decision to leave a path to the GM job with the Panthers in 2017 and take over a Bills team that hadn't been to the postseason in 17 years.

Getting a playoff game at home was one of his top priorities once he and head coach Sean McDermott arrived.

"This was an opportunity in a place that's been down for so long that had such a great tradition, and still has a great fan base," Beane said in December. "How exciting would it be to get this thing turned around and host playoff games here? That's what Sean and I want. We want to win the AFC East so that we can host games here. That's been the goal all along, and I think at the end of the day, hopefully, we can get that done this year."

The Bills won the AFC East in 2020 for the first time since that 1995 season, registering their best record (13-3) since 1991 in the process. Riding a six-game win streak entering the playoffs, Buffalo had beaten those six opponents by an average of 19.8 points.

Playing in their first one-score game since Week 8, Allen said Saturday's win proved the Bills can win the close ones, as well.

"This is the playoffs -- this is what it's going to be," Bills receiver Cole Beasley said. "It's going to come down to the wire every time. ... Teams play their best football in the playoffs."

Playing through a knee injury, Beasley caught all seven of his targets for 57 yards. He credited Bills fans -- in the stands for the first time this season -- for a "boost," saying he "needed a little extra" in his first game since Week 16.

Indianapolis took a 10-7 lead midway through the second quarter and nearly extended it when Philip Rivers slightly overthrew Michael Pittman in the end zone on a fourth-down attempt.

Buffalo scored 17 unanswered points following the stop, and the teams traded points in the fourth quarter en route to a thrilling finish.

Trailing by three points with 2:30 remaining in the game, the Colts marched their way downfield and converted on fourth-and-10 on a pass from Rivers to Zach Pascal -- who seemingly fumbled after the catch. Pascal was ruled down by contact, and the call stood after a booth review.

Buffalo knocked down Rivers' Hail Mary attempt with time running out to seal the victory.

Indianapolis had scored on each of its previous two drives, but Bills coach Sean McDermott felt confident in his defense to hold firm one last time.

"Looked like it was well executed by our defense," McDermott said. "I liked the look in their eye when they took the field for that last drive."

Watching the ball sail through the air on the final play brought back memories of the Bills' loss to the Cardinals in Week 10 -- but more so for fans than players. Safety Jordan Poyer said he had "all the confidence in the world" throughout the play, as did Dawkins watching from the sideline.

"This time I was happy that it was going up there. Our guys practice it every single day; I see it every single day in practice," Dawkins said. "I don't want to speak for future days, but they practice for it not to happen. When it went up, I was less stressed because my dogs are prepared for this moment. As you see, Micah [Hyde] went up and tomahawked that ball down like he was a starter on the volleyball court.

"That was a double-hand tomahawk spike as a statement, like it wasn't happening again."

The Bills will host a divisional playoff game next weekend, with their opponent to be determined.

"One's not good enough for us," Allen said. "We've got to find a way to put our best foot forward this week and get another one."

Before we declare the National League East a two-team race between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, let us consider the Washington Nationals. You remember them: Won the World Series in 2019, feature the best hitter on the planet in Juan Soto, have a rotation with Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin, and now they've signed Kyle Schwarber to a one-year, $10 million contract after the Chicago Cubs non-tendered him in December.

After earlier acquiring Josh Bell from the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Nationals have acquired two players who combined for 75 home runs in 2019. They have also acquired two players who hit .188 and .226 in 2020. The two hitters are both excellent buy-low opportunities for general manager Mike Rizzo. Both are young enough -- both will be entering their age-28 seasons -- to not read too much into what happened in 2020. Both players hit the ball hard, so it's easy to see why Rizzo would want to take a chance:

Pro14: Dragons 20-28 Ospreys

Published in Rugby
Saturday, 09 January 2021 11:12

Ospreys beat Dragons at Rodney Parade on Saturday to clinch a second successive away Pro14 win.

Ospreys scored tries through Mat Protheroe, George North and Scott Otten, with 13 points added by fly-half Stephen Myler.

Dragons responded with tries from Jared Rosser and impressive centre Jamie Roberts, and 10 points from Josh Lewis.

It was a fifth win in six games for Ospreys, while Dragons have lost all three recent Welsh derbies.

Dragons and football side Newport County, who also play at Rodney Parade, moved to ensure their weekend fixtures would not be postponed because of the cold weather by investing in a dome cover for their pitch. Newport host Premier League side Brighton in the FA Cup on Sunday.

Wales flankers Justin Tipuric and Dan Lydiate were rested by Ospreys head coach Toby Booth but centre Owen Watkin returned from injury. Fly-half Myler captained the region in Tipuric's absence.

Wales centre Roberts was outstanding again as he returned from Covid-19 self-isolation for Dragons.

Dragons made five changes, with wing Rosser back in the side and Owen Jenkins moving to full-back as Jonah Holmes missed out with concussion. Lock Joe Davies, hooker Richard Hibbard and flanker Huw Taylor started in the pack.

Ospreys started positively with searing breaks from flanker Sam Cross and wing Luke Morgan as the visitors counter-attacked rather than kicking back ball, a tactic which had dominated the previous Welsh derbies.

That intent allowed Myler to open the scoring. Dragons responded almost immediately with some powerful surges from centre Roberts eventually enabling Josh Lewis to level the scores.

The home side were inspired by that score and another expansive attacking move resulted in a yellow card for Luke Morgan after the Ospreys wing deliberately knocked on an attempted pass from Nick Tompkins to Rosser.

That Dragons double act took advantage of Morgan's absence, with Tompkins releasing Rosser to dive in to score and Lewis converting from the touchline.

It was Dragons' first league try in 210 minutes, with their last coming against Benetton in early December.

Despite being down to 14 men, Ospreys responded with a well-worked try of their own, as full-back Protheroe sneaked into the left-hand corner and Myler expertly converted.

Replacement Ospreys centre Joe Hawkins, on for Keiran Williams, made a piercing break which was only rewarded by a Myler penalty. It at least restored the visitors' advantage and gave Ospreys a 13-10 interval lead.

Wales hooker Elliot Dee replaced Hibbard at the beginning of the second half and his break, alongside a storming surge from fellow front-rower Brok Harris, almost resulted in a second Dragons try before a frustrating forward pass.

The hosts, aided by outstanding back-rowers Aaron Wainwright and captain Harrison Keddie, had dominated the early second-half exchanges but could only level the scores through a Lewis penalty.

There was a special second-half moment for Ospreys wing Keelan Giles, who returned as a replacement for his first game in 15 months after knee problems.

Ospreys scored as soon as Giles entered the field - North slicing through the Dragons defence before exchanging passes with Watkin to power over.

Dragons retaliated with the rampant Roberts powering over through the Ospreys half-backs to claim his fourth try of the season, with Lewis' conversion levelling the scores.

That proved shortlived as Dragons replacement Lewis Evans was penalised and Myler slotted over his third penalty. Replacement hooker Otten then put the result beyond doubt with a driving lineout try.

Dragons fly-half Lewis was yellow-carded for a late charge on Protheroe as Ospreys were denied a late bonus-point try but celebrated victory.

Ospreys head coach Toby Booth: "It was tough derby arm wrestle with two teams that went for it which was great for people to watch.

"They were big and physical and created a lot of problems for us. It was fantastic to get the win but disappointing not to get the bonus point at the end."

Dragons director of rugby Dean Ryan: "We have to be critical of ourselves. I felt in the first-half we did not put enough pressure on the likes of Mat Protheroe.

"In the second-half we had the ambition but we were not accurate enough after having plenty of time and opportunities in their half. We were just not sharp enough or have enough quality at the moment."

Dragons: Owen Jenkins; Jared Rosser, Nick Tompkins, Jamie Roberts, Ashton Hewitt; Josh Lewis, Tavis Knoyle; Brok Harris, Richard Hibbard, Leon Brown, Joe Davies, Matthew Screech, Huw Taylor, Harrison Keddie (capt), Aaron Wainwright.

Craig Von Dohren: Still Winning

Published in Racing
Saturday, 09 January 2021 12:00

Time seemingly trickles like a shallow stream in the rolling hills of Oley Township, Pa., tucked tightly into bucolic Berks County. Its quietude and wafting aromas of agriculture belie its lofty place in history.

Daniel Boone, the frontiersman and folk hero, was born there in 1734. People around town still talk about it, even though much of Oley Township’s most recent history has moved considerably faster than it took the frontier folk hero to meander from Pennsylvania to Kentucky. Especially, you’ll learn, when it comes to automotive competition.

Another son, Tommy Hinnershitz, went forth after tilling its rich loam to capture seven East Coast titles in sprint cars with AAA and USAC. That melding of speed and agriculture is all encompassing. But Hinnershitz achieved great things while doing both, like Craig Von Dohren is still doing 60 years after his forebear retired to the fields for good. In this town, Von Dohren’s a legend, too.

“Racing is a business. It’s a very stressful, high-energy, cutthroat sport,” Von Dohren said matter-of-factly. “We run so many races, that after we win, my wife, Kimberly, says, ‘Can’t you just enjoy the win, instead of worrying about tomorrow’s race?’ I really enjoy it, but the joy is short-lived because tomorrow we’ve got to do it again, or do this, or do something else. It’s just a high-maintenance racket. It’s not where you come home from work and work in the race shop for a couple of hours. It’s progressed so much that full-time racers have more knowledge, technology and finance than the little guys. But it is what it is. The world is always speeding up.

“Go interview a junkie,” he explained. “This is my drug. This is what we do. This is what we’ve always done. I just love this sport, the competition, racing in general and performing. My wife tells me that if I went out and got a 40-hour-a-week job, I’d make more money and have more fun. And she’s right. The hours, and the ups and downs of the sport, make it tough. But this is what we do. I’ve got a couple of more years left and we’re going to finish it out. You have good days and bad days, like anything else.”

Von Dohren knows of what he speaks because this has been a full-time deal for him for a long time. Two feature wins during the COVID-constricted season allowed him to secure his 11th championship in the modified division at Grandview Speedway, a maximum-contact banked bowl dug out of a hilltop a little farther east in Berks County.

Von Dohren is demonstrably the dominant figure in Grandview’s modern history; his 109 victories in the modifieds ranking him first on the track’s list of all-time feature winners. Von Dohren’s legacy there includes five wins in the track’s most prestigious race, the Freedom 76, and eight more in the Forrest Rogers Memorial, named for the speedway’s founder.

Von Dohren’s march to star status has paralleled the rise of the 358 modified as the weekly race car of choice in eastern Pennsylvania. Since his first feature win in 1981, Von Dohren has captured an estimated 300 victories — he’s uncertain of the exact number — at speedways in five states.

Von Dohren’s Grandview bullet is his own No. 1c Bicknell chassis with horsepower by Nick Gatto. Prepared by crew chief Jason Bashore, the car rides on required American Racer tires. For Friday nights at Big Diamond, Von Dohren drives for car owner Dave Dissinger, another Bicknell customer. He also runs a variety of shows for Bruce Brueche. While special events and midweek programs draw him to Delaware, New Jersey and other locales, Von Dohren’s orbit largely embraces Grandview and Big Diamond.

Report: Jordan Spieth visits Butch Harmon for swing help

Published in Golf
Saturday, 09 January 2021 07:03

Jordan Spieth reportedly has a new set of eyes on his swing.

While the 27-year-old Spieth is still with longtime instructor Cameron McCormick, he also recently worked on his full swing with Butch Harmon, according to Golf Digest. Per the report, Spieth wanted "validation from Harmon that he is on the right path in making changes" with McCormick.

Spieth hasn’t won since the 2017 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale as he’s slipped to No. 84 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He also posted just two top-10s last year.

After ranking inside the top 25 in strokes gained: tee-to-green in five of his first six seasons on Tour, Spieth has finished the past two seasons ranked 157th and 90th, respectively. He also has been ranked outside the top 100 in strokes gained putting in two of the past three seasons.

Haaland, Sancho strikes earn BVB win at Leipzig

Borussia Dortmund scored three times in the second half with two goals from Erling Haaland and one from Jadon Sancho, to beat hosts RB Leipzig 3-1 on Saturday and close the gap to the top spots in the Bundesliga.

After a toothless first half Dortmund improved after the break, taking the lead when Halaand charged down the wing and Marco Reus flicked his cross on for Sancho to fire in.

The England international has now scored for the second consecutive game after failing to find the back of the net in the first 13 league matches of the campaign.

The visitors came close to a second goal in the 65th minute but Haaland's powerful shot was tipped onto the crossbar by keeper Peter Gulacsi.

Leipzig, who had kept a clean sheet in their previous four league games, responded with a chance of their own two minutes later as Dani Olmo hit the post with his shot.

But Haaland got onto the score sheet, heading in a Sancho cross at the far post after launching the move himself in the 72nd minute.

The Norway international grabbed a second goal six minutes from the end when he was sent through by Reus to round Gulacsi before Leipzig scored in the 90th minute with Alexander Sorloth.

Dortmund are fourth in the standings on 28 points, five off leaders Bayern Munich, who lost 3-2 at Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday. Leipzig, who suffered their first home loss of the season, are in second place on 31.

FA Cup holders Arsenal advance with late win

Emile Smith Rowe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored in extra time as Arsenal began their FA Cup defence with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Newcastle United in the third round at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Substitute Smith Rowe was initially shown a straight red in stoppage time by referee Chris Kavanagh for a tackle on Matthew Longstaff before it was downgraded to a yellow card following a VAR review.

The 20-year-old midfielder went on the score the opener as he latched on to a ball from Alexandre Lacazette inside the box before slipping it past Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Aubameyang also found the net from close range in the final minutes of extra time to extend Arsenal's winning run to four games in all competitions.

"We knew how tough it was going to be, they're a tough opponent. It was about breaking them down. From a young kid I have always wanted to play for this club, I am really happy," Smith Rowe said.

Arsenal have now progressed from 24 of their last 25 FA Cup third round ties, failing only against Nottingham Forest in 2018.

"You have to take your chances when they come along, we had the opportunity in the final few minutes and didn't grasp it. As a cup tie, it could have gone either way and we rue the missed chances," Newcastle manager Steve Bruce said.

Messi, Griezmann hit doubles in big Barca win

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 09 January 2021 12:22

Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann each bagged two goals as Barcelona eased to a comfortable 4-0 victory at Granada on Saturday.

Griezmann ended his goal drought of nine matches in all competitions as Barca closed the gap on the Madrid clubs at the top of the table.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)

Granada almost scored the opener inside the first two minutes but Marc-Andre ter Stegen produced a superb save from Antonio Puertas.

Barca took the lead after 12 minutes when Griezmann reacted quickest inside the box and finished into the bottom corner.

Griezmann then turned provider when he set up Messi who curled the ball into the top corner.

Messi scored his second just before half-time with a stunning free-kick. The Barca captain has now scored 10 goals or more in La Liga for the 15th consecutive campaign.

Griezmann grabbed his second of the match after 63 minutes with a half-volley from a tight angle.

Granada went down to 10 men after Jesus Vallejo was dismissed for a professional foul on Martin Braithwaite.

Ronald Koeman's side sit four points off league leaders Atletico Madrid after their match against Athletic Bilbao was postponed due to disruptions from a rare snowstorm.
